Coming from a longtime playstation fanboy 2004-2008 Ps2 2008-2012 Ps3 I can see people being upset by this move. For me personally I had already made the decision that the next time I reactivated it would be on pc. I made this decision strictly based on the fact that playing on a console is an inferior experience. That's the truth.
Whether it is the lag when firing off heavy doses of macros. Or blackscreening in Besieged, passing through a runic portal, entering an abyssea maw, or when you're trying to do voidwatch. That ***is downright maddening. If I had a dime for everytime I have been frozen talking to a Aht Urghan warp npc/Op warp, or getting cockblocked in a cut scene that changes areas I'd be rich. Oh I almost forgot the lag. In so many end game events or walking through a major city hub.
So while I understand the stubborness, and reluctance to change I urge fellow playstationites to focus on the boon you'll recieve changing to pc. It might take us out of our comfort zone for a while till we learn the ins, and outs of a new platform. In the long run I believe most who switch will be pleased they did after they get the hang of it.

I already play on the PC... -_-;
I like having choices.
I also happen to have a XBOX360 which can play the game.
What's wrong with that ? lol
P.S.: Even with the PC version, there's problems. For example a friend of mine has a computer which is at least twice the power of mine yet she can't use FFXI and Firefox at same time as one lag the other and cause problems. Way to go when you need to check something quick on a wiki to decide what to do.
Software issues as the problem is not that bad on my PC (using a older OS, too)...

Seems like they should offer the ability to just buy the expansion on pc/xbox and get the rest of the game free. since if a ps2 owner wanted to continue they would have to rebuy everything.

to be fair, that only costs 9.99 for PC nowadays.
not that I don't agree leaving us ps users out in the cold is slightly racist, & a complete FU to us.

How is that a fallacy?
Surely anyone who post is then asking for a response, thus validating his response in the first place. However, you telling him not to tell people how to do something is hypocritical.
one shouldn't have to explain how circular arguments are fallacies.
He didn't respond to anyone, he started in without being provoked, inaccurately I might add, which is another reason your argument is flawed.
Me telling somebody not to but in and telling other people what to do is not equal, It's ludicrous to think it is.
It is not a circular argument, thus it is not fallicious.
His response was provoked by the thread in general, i.e. the theme of "PS2 no longer supported.
It could well be argued that his post was more advice as opposed to 'telling someone what to do'
Your response however, was directly telling him not to 'tell someone what to do'.
So, to lay it out plain and simple:
Author made a statement. Call it advice, call it a direction, it matters not.
If the act of 'telling someone to do something' is (A)
You told the author to do something, but at the same time, the thing which you told them to do, is to not do what it is you are claiming.
Thus, you did (A) while claiming you should not (A).
The only circular fallacy is that which you preach. Sir.
It is a very circular argument, and his statement was provoked by nothing but ignorance and greed.

XI has this weird thing to where it automatically goes to a low priority task when not mained, I found that changing it fixed any lag out issues, and Firefox takes a good bit of ram when using a lot of plugins. (I bet there's a way to force XI from going to low priority, but you'd be better at figuring that out than I).

Well, that's a PlayOnline Viewer feature, not FFXI's. Just click out the window while it's updating or loading a page, you will see it slows down to a bog and skips a lot of frames, just like FFXI does...
I wonder what they were thinking when they programmed it the way they did. >_<

Why do we still use PlayOnline to log in when SE stopped using them to take our money? I thought they were doing away with PlayOnline?

I thought so too, but I guess it's because of the POL messaging system. I would like something more streamlined like the FFXIV launcher.

I assume it's because the game is still programmed to only launch through PlayOnline and SE either can't seperate them or is choosing not to.

Because the game is a DLL, which loads itself inside of PlayOnline Viewer. That's why, if you use Windower you have to start Windower first, it then loads POL main exe, hooks on it and from there all goes until the game is playing.
FFXI does not work without POL because it's an encrypted DLL which lacks some of the code for it to work (which is in POL FYI).
That's made in such a awkward way as POL was supposedly meant to wrap the game and protect it from reverse engineering and cheating ... lol

there's 2 reasons why they stopped using POL to take our money.
1. security, and the biggest one.
2. to streamline with XIV.
(I still don't like that they have been phasing out POL, it once had such promise... oh well, guess it's one of those Enix things.

Well about time I quit then. No point in paying them for something if I won't be playing past the upcoming expansion.

it still doesn't mean there won't be an expansion for the NA PS2, just that it won't be available at launch, there never said it won't be available at all, unless they have a new statement available.

does that mean Adoulin wont support Windows 3.1 either? ;)

considering the game is still designed for it (read the thread, you may understand this) a very long time.
As for Windows 98, I have a tower I keep around specifically for it, can run any program from dos to win98 on one machine, without having to fiddle with virtualization, although if I can get something as nice as dosbox to play my 16bit 9x games, it will go, but I haven't found something that is fully compatible yet.

After reading this thread, I wanted to check a few points:
--Are NA PS2 discs physically different than JP ones? It would be extremely silly if that were the case, so I assume that it's some sort of contract issue that prevents SE from getting NA discs pressed with the equipment used for JP discs. They may be able to sort that out eventually. I'd imagine that they are all pressed in the same Chinese plant in any case...
--If anyone didn't see those videos of the PS2 I posted in the other PS2 thread, you should check out how incredibly much faster the PS2 is at loading player models than a very fast PC. Makes me mad/jealous!
--The PS2's tiny amount of RAM puts limits on the sizes of arrays, like the number of inventory slots, amount of distinct models and textures loaded on players nearby, number of PCs/NPCs in a zone, limited amount of translation terms,etc... These could all be easily increased if they no longer had to be concerned about RAM usage.
As it is, the game only gets slower and slower on both PS2 and PC as they sloppily patch in new features. If they were willing to spend some money, they could at least rewrite small portions of the client to optimize RAM usage on the PS2: a few bytes shaved from a routine here and there, and they would be able to maybe give us 90 inventory.
Makes me mad that this is their most profitable FF, and they won't spend a cent(yen?) on client optimization. Then again, maybe there's no one left that knows how write good PS2 code anymore, for any price ?

they never wanted to give users a lot of inventory space, and they gave the ram excuse for years and they still managed to increase the space, so not buying it.
your second point is a valid one, but kind of not worth screwing over a large portion of the player base.
your next point has nothing to do with the PS2 and is purely a server limitation.
as for translation: they can now easily pull such a thing from the hdd and have plenty of terms in there, that's sheer laziness of them not bothering to code it, granted the load would be slower, but people should be able to customize that list anyway, kind of makes me think that the thing is server side instead of client side, which should be remedied anyway, then manually added terms could be saved like macro/map data, with the partition increase being as large as it is, this shouldn't be an issue at all.

They would have to retranslate PS2 discs for NA, and they don't wanna.

| Greetings,
I’d like to take a moment to clarify which platform Seekers of Adoulin will be available on for those that have been asking. We will continue to support North American FINAL FANTASY XI players on the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and PC (Windows) platforms. However, FINAL FANTASY XI: Seekers of Adoulin will only be available on the Xbox 360 and Windows platforms in North America when it is released in 2013. | |
