Here's what I think. SE added new dev team members when ffxiv was ish. They added a test server so we could do half the testing for them. They started only fixing things and tweaking things that existed and were often complained about. Abyssea seemed to take the game in a new direction then leave it dead there. So the question is why? Maybe because they had all the devs working on a real expansion for the first time in years. One that wont be a cheap re-skin, one that won't be full of bugs and glitches, and "tanaka" (balance) issues. I have a feeling this is the first step in growing the game again seeing as its their main moneymaker. I say Bravo FFXI devs. Don't listen to the crying. THIS IS WHY WE CAN"T HAVE NICE THINGS. Even if its ish. just shut up and thank them for giving you something new. they really didn't have to. see everquest
Ok

You have a point Ducea , but there is little to no difference of them to work you up and give you a huge turd than give you nothing at all . The release of 2 new jobs , imho , points to this being a turd . There are 20 freakin jobs already . half of which most people would argue are marginally useful in any content 76-99. With everything that been released and "updated" since the cap change (see "Stagger") until something promising is shown to be contained in this "new" expansion , i am not gettin my hopes up . As of right now , To me this new expansion is goin to be groups of Geomancers , Rune Fencers , and probly 2 or 3 "old" jobs(whm , nin and probly war) runnin around doin all the new stuff . Maybe instead of new jobs , they can give us an expansion that makes FFXi what it was Pre-Abyssea .

I never understood how people can complain about new content. You don't have to play the new stuff. You could just keep going to sky with 18 level 75's to get WLegs.

For those who may wonder what the hell is a Rune? here is some history on the words.
Rune Word History: Among early peoples writing was a serious thing, full of magical power. In its only reference to writing, the Iliad calls it "baneful signs." The Germanic peoples used a runic alphabet as their form of writing, using it to identify combs or helmets, make calendars, encode secret messages, and mark funeral monuments. Runes were also employed in casting spells, as to gain a kiss from a sweetheart or to make an enemy's gut burst. In casting a spell the writing of the runes was accompanied by a mumbled or chanted prayer or curse, also called a rune, to make the magic work. These two meanings also appear in Old English rn, the ancestor of our word. The direct descendants of Old English rn are the archaic verb round, "whisper, talk in secret," and the obsolete noun roun, "whispering, secret talk." The use of the word to refer to inscribed runic characters apparently disappeared in the late 14th or early 15th century but was revived by Danish writers on Germanic antiquities, who adopted it from Old Norse toward the end of the 17th century. Appropriately enough, this sense of rune, which had faded away like a whisper, reappeared from the mists of the past.
Man I am bored enough to put that on here.

Yes I leave it for the ill informed which seems to be about 90% of the population. I notice they post first play later, rather than put the time in then post about stuff they know nothing about. So hence why I wrote for some of the uneducated people. Thanks for the question though.

I´m getting sick to the stomach from that mini-video with the woman getting beaten up (in other words, your signature). Really sick of seeing it again and again, please remove it.

But Seriously Rune Fencer sounds stupid and pointless. The class seems like a new way to try to make a new Red Mage that actually has combat skills. And why the hell does it have to be a brand new made up job class >< They have other jobs from previous games like Mystic Knight, which has the same damn features but gives the dev team something to atleast get the fans something to look forward to.
I'm excited about the Geomancer job class, new areas, and all the new content tho.

Was it concifmed if this job use 1hand or 2hand weapon? Quetzalcoatl.Kenrusai said: »eww another lame single-hand sword job, bad DPS no thanks. Valefor.Prothescar said: »Not to mention it's being marketed as a tank, not a DPS.
I'm going to agree with Kenrusai here, unless that is a Greatsword, I don't really see how "tanking" is going to work without big changes to the enmity system in 11, it needs a serious overhaul. Otherwise Ragnarok DRK's say: "you're not 'tanking' anything." The melee with the most actual DPS is the one that's your "tank." It's a huge reason why PLDs are so behind now, bad enmity system and a "cap" on the max, when its so easy to hit that enmity cap for almost any job? /sadtaru

The male Rune Fencer's sword has an extra hilt some ways up into the blade, which was kinda common in real life greatswords, so take that as you will. :I

Oh boy, Rune Fencer. Anyone familiar with the Ogre Battle series? This job is the recent remake of Tactics Ogre's male equivalent of the previously female-only Valkyrie, a class that uses spears as its primary weapon and casts underpowered elemental nukes.
It's hard to tell what they're thinking anymore. The name screams Tactics Ogre and the abilities scream Final Fantasy V. Hmm.
Guess people haven't played ff6 xD To be fair, if FF6 has an official job list anywhere, it's not in-game (not counting the GBA port, that is, which I have a feeling is less remembered than the original SNES release).

Actually this class is Mystic Knight, they just name it Rune Fencer for some reason.....(the sword they using isn't even rapier/epee)

The concept is exactly the same as Mystic knight, and JP name name is only 1 word different. Mystic Knight in JP is called Mahou kenshi, Runic Fencer is called Madou Kenshi. The concept is also fairly similar.

Mystic Knight (魔法剣士, Magic Fencer), also known as Sorcerer, Spellblade or Spell Fencer, is a recurring job in the Final Fantasy series. Skilled in both magic and swordsmanship, they fuse both arts into Spellblade. They are also resistant to magic as a whole.

Its meant for magical defense more than physical and its defense will be by runes they put up it will reflect dmg to a extent but hinder their physical output.

So more or less it almost sounds like a PLD with Magical defense and output instead of normal defense.
might be the 1st job to get a reflect spell or ability, maybe even absorb it. one could argue it almost sounds exactly like a magic tank if any of the above is true.

Japanese name 魔道剣士 (Madoukenshi) literally means "Magic Swordsman," ("Kenshi" means "swordsman, swordswoman, or fencer") not 魔道騎士 (Madoukishi) which would be a magic knight ("Kishi" - Knight - See: Dark Knight: 暗黒騎士 "Ankokukishi" - Darkness Knight")

Just to give an indication of how much not to rely on nomenclature from previous series entries, what we call "Puppetmaster" is really からくり士 (machinist, "contraptionist") in Japanese, which was Edgar's job in FF6. The FFXI PUP has little to nothing to do with any of Edgar's traits/abilities. As far as Celes is concerned, her official job was ルーンナイト which is obviously a far cry from 魔導剣士 in that it's not even Kanji, and she lacked the ability to infuse her sword with magic, only the ability to negate enemy magic attacks at the cost of her turn.
SE's inability to stick to established terminology, even within Japanese, is enough to make any educated guess a glorified "regular guess" and really no more than picking a paper out of a hat. What's certain is that the job will fall somewhere in the Mystic Knight/Spellblade/Rune Knight realm in that all aspects seem to be part of the class.
Though PUPs should really be able to use Chainsaws.

Rune Fencer | 魔導剣士
Épéiste runique

Quick with a blade as well as an incantation, these versatile duelists employ the power of arcane runes to sway the tide of battle both offensively and defensively.

Rune Fencer Overview
Strengths
Their exceptional magic defense and elemental resistance put them squarely in the tank category, along with paladins and ninjas.
Two broad categories round out their runic arsenal: - Element-based runes add elemental damage to attacks and increase resistance to certain elements.
- Enchantment-based runes increase either the fencer's attacking prowess or their ability to defend.
Rune fencers will possess versatile abilities like one that cuts the duration of the next enhancing magic spell cast on them by half, but in turn amplifies the spell's effect 1.5 times, and another that erects a barrier that reduces magic damage.
Weaknesses
Acquisition Unrevealed
Requires Seekers of Adoulin expansion pack.
