This guy has been standing in Selbina since I started playing 6 years ago. He never moves, is almost always on and still bazaars his goods as if folks still exp in Valkurm Dunes. Who is this guy? Share your stories!!!!

Necro Bump Detected!
[288 days between previous and next post]I spent some time studying Ascii this evening. I researched a bit about him using google, made note of his inventory, tasted some of his wares, and finally attempted communicating with him. I wasn't holding my breath, as back in the days of turning in my ebisu fish, I would always /tell him for luck (i.e. I would ask for him to marry me).
But tonight...tonight my efforts paid off...  ("Welcome AREA88" is what he has in his bazaar comment. I don't know what it means, but I used in in /tell anyways) After adding a couple of more items to his bazaar, he logged out. All hail Ascii: The one and only King of Carbuncle.

Day 1: I have attempted to communicate with this weird, yet intriguing being known as Ascii.
Day 2: I brought a chocolate bar to give it, to show him my good faith. Day 43: I followed Ascii through his natural habitat of Selbina today, he doesn't seem to move, or communicate much. Day 51: Today I saw the rare Ascii poop... it was smelly. Day 61: Lost Ascii in a mess of people that fish day and night with no rest... I return to my camp disheartened, but not deterred. Day 109: Ascii has raided my camp, he took my pornography and my sandwich... man I'm hungry. Day 150: Ascii seems to have found another of his kind. He sits there all day long and stares at it. Day 201: They mated... at least I think that's what it was... I had to go fetch my brown paper bag to puke into, what they were doing was unspeakable. Day 288: BREAKTHROUGH! He has communicated back at me, I believe he finally trusts me!

I don't know this person but I have noticed that each server I have an alt on has that one mule that is forever logged on and never moves.
Semi ASCII related story: When I started this game I had four ASCII animals in my bazaar comment area and it said "Vivas petting zoo" or something like that. They all died but this guy has been with me since the beginning.  There was this taru that used to sit by the tree next to the South Sandy AH bazaaring stuff like food and fireworks on Caitsith, and seemed to never log off. I see that same taru now on Ragnarok still at that tree.
Ascii is the code holder for this entire game... If Ascii falls so does FFXI!

In fenrir we had a PC who used to stay at the gateway to the mog house at Southern Sand'Oria who used to bazaar bard related stuff amongst other misc things. That one is M.I.A. for a while now, but we still have Blaugerger ! Ah Blauberger ! He's been by the Bastok Markets mog house entrance since the world began... (lol)  On Phoenix we used to have a little flower girl in Bastok Markets for many years: Tearnoteyoko. She'd sit there and would never move. I'd pass her all the time on the way to my Mog House. There's something mystic about characters like that.
Estrada on Kujata/Valefor. He's so kewl, he doesn't even logoff for maintenance.
I've been dying to know who Ascii is since I started playing. I used to buy mithkabobs from him during dunes parties.
There was also another mule by the entrance to Ro'Maeve that sold silent oils and sneak powders for the longest time during Sky's heyday, but his name escapes me. I just don't understand who would pay at least $12.95 a month to keep a single character logged in 24/7. They certainly can't be generating that much revenue. What are some other possibilities at play here?
-A character that is serving some kind of data mining function to support external FFXI applications? -An SE employee who just likes having a permanent presence in FFXI? -Some crazy person who wishes they were an NPC? -An RMT kingpin? edit: And I knew about the Area 88 manga, but I couldn't make sense of why he had it in his comment. Maybe it's as simple as liking it. Also, I don't think this message has always been in his bazaar comment. It's relatively new (past couple years).  I have some random items from my inventory for sale. I also bought 6 different consumables from his bazaar, and have them at max gil (I thought about selling them at the same price, but I don't want him to think I'm trying to harm his business). I also thought about completely buying out his inventory, and putting them up for the same price; to become his galka-doppelganger. It would cost about 400k. I don't honestly expect anything to come of this. I just want to show him some appreciation.
