I've been using a Tornado from Totally Wicked for about a year and a half without a real cigarette. It's more expensive to start up than buying a carton of cigarettes, but the batteries for that model seem to last well over a year (I tried a lot of other models where batteries died in a couple of months) and you can buy substantial amounts of nicotine. I usually spend about $100 every 3 months or so instead of...I guess it was about $40-$50 / week for me. You can get different strengths of nicotine to step down lightly if you'd like as well. They don't make any official claims to help quit smoking, but it works well from my experience as a replacement. I suppose you might say you're no better off, but I'd say it's a big advantage to have no smoke, odor, ashes, etc. as well as just being addicted to nicotine instead of nicotine + every other addictive chemical in cigarettes.
That being said, I'm not sure how effective it is if your intent is to completely remove your addiction to nicotine and it will appear that you're smoking, of course. Usually people in bars give me funny looks, although lately people seem to understand what they are more often than not.
