Honestly, 900 VE is kind of pitiful for something on a 45 minute recast. Invincible is 7200 VE, and 2000 CE(with JP). And Shield Bash is 450CE/900VE on a one minute timer. <,<
Certainly, the point of the Intervene isn't enmity in any case, but... They really could have done better. Better than nothing I suppose.
By fractalvoid 2025-07-14 11:40:30
I was hoping since Shield Bash gives a nice chunk of CE that Intervene would also be the same/similar (especially with the CD it has)
Haven't convinced my main DD in sortie to come /DRG yet so sometimes on basement bosses can get a little hairy so was trying to find more ways to spike enmity at the beginning.
DE+Flash + Palisade usually does decent but of course was looking for ways to squeeze in more - thanks a ton for doing that testing/research Martel ^_^

What can I replace defending ring with in a maxed out pdt set?
Jelly ring already in the other slots
By Nariont 2025-07-14 12:09:44
Depends on the job, moonbeam/lights always a solid option. 2nd gelatinous ring, various ambu rings, etc etc just depends how much you need to fill/how much you want to give up offense wise. Obviously should just focus on getting d.ring though

No offense pure defense
mainly for taking a tank buster
Gathering oddessy mobs for sleep
Running mobs to the portal limbus
All items used so far are generic
In this case Sam
But too much dt need to move stuff around.
~3875 hp
~1880 defense
ItemSet 400100

personal opinion would be to make the 2nd ring a shenndick so you can move faster, warder's charm to better resist the odd nuke/debuff if you get a caster

ItemSet 400100If you're not looking to move quickly(Shneddick, as mentioned if you are), then use an enemy crit- ring. When you're really tanky, crits can be a pretty fair chunk of the damage that actually gets through.
Enemy crit- Ring options are fortified ring(7%) or warden's ring(5%). There's also a 5% Ammo( eluder's sachet), but it's got DT + on it, and you'd lose def there. Normal mobs crit rate caps out at 10% when they're capping dDEX, so you'd need 9% enemy crit- to floor them at the 1% hard floor. I've only actually parsed a small selection of mobs, but I've yet to find anything with a higher crit rate.
If you're not sold on Enemy crit-... well, there's not a whole lot else. paguroidea ring is 20 def. Regal ring is +10 VIT, so 15 def.
If anyone knew how to get jotnar ring, that's 30 DEF and +10 VIT(45 def total)
By Dodik 2025-07-14 12:49:53
Provocare Ring is 15DEF, 3VIT.
Other rings Sam cannot wear.
Flume belt +1 has def and Vit on it too.
I use staunch tathlum in my Sam high def set instead of a def ammo piece, more meva/resistance.

I also have a separate set for meva and mdt
The crit rings are an interesting idea, I had not considered
I was looking at regal or ilbrat as a quick fix
HP vit agi vs HP def agi
Paguroidea was looking to be a decent contender
Jotnar ideal if putting defense over 1900 makes a bigger difference than 1880

I'm moving out the the practical now, and just kinda enjoying digging at this now, lol. but...
SAM can wear Forfend+1, for +142 def. And and Mafic Cudgel for +15 VIT(22.5 DEF) +162.5 DEF total. XD
Or, Hachimonji has +20 VIT, and Refined grip+1 can get a +20 DEF aug.
Again, I'm not seriously recommending these, just following the search for DEF/VIT to extremes.

Not exactly the answer, but on some jobs I would simply go for evasion on top of DT instead. Beside obvious examples like THF, on MNK for example, null shawl and belt, AF+4 feet, Eabani and using Dodge would probably floor accuracy for Limbus mobs and maybe even up to floor 4 in Oddy C.
EDIT: Not exactly sure how good it would be on SAM, but evasion on top of Seigan and Thir eye should be quite potent.

If Blu is a good example without considering spells or ja
It should be more evasive than a unbuffed blue unless we got some traits thrown in there
What would be worth giving up for evasion?
Moogle belt and moonlight cape add quite a bit of hp

Not sure how your process of pulling looks like, but assuming you are not getting heals until you stop, you could simply switch to evasion gear which I mentioned, when you lose HP granted by HP gear in those slots.

When you're really tanky, crits can be a pretty fair chunk of the damage that actually gets through.
I find this is mostly true when you have Phalanx on.
How often do you parse a monster having a >5% crit rate on you?
My experience has been that basically everything is floored on me with enemy crit hit rate merits.

That is a possibility I had not considered
Press the pdt gearswap key, get stoneskin from my brd lol and a cure4, walk into the mobs, cast sleep
If I make a neighboring hotkey or double press for evasion it might not be too much to juggle in the moment.
Thinking deeper on this
I do need to work out a stance change third eye macro for sure
By Nariont 2025-07-14 14:47:03
Could just start your pull in seigan/TE, gear wise it wouldnt change much in the armor department, would be all accessories which is basically all null in their respective slots except neck which can stay to warders or you can opt to swap to bathy +1 if you want to keep pumping evasion

My experience has been that basically everything is floored on me with enemy crit hit rate merits. Honestly, I haven't parsed much at all. I use battlemod, which breaks kparser(And the memloc's being a pain in my *** even when I'm willing to unload battlemod), And I had to modify Parse to get it to track/display enemy crits right.
I thought I had it working and tried a test pull of most of Sheol C 4th floor. Turns out I missed a factor and ended up just using log data and searching for hits/crits to get crit rates for that test. -_-;
Anyway, Sheol C 4th floor. PLD/BLU, ML 45, 259 total AGI. As I wanted to actually see the mob's unmodified crit rate, I removed my enemy crit merits for this, and didn't use any ecrit- gear. Code Search terms count
hits Martel for 16619
scores a critical hit 1681
Total 18300
Crit% 9.186%
Mob specific rates
Bigbird hits Martel 3620
Bigbird scores a critical hit 405
total 4025
Crit% 10.062%
Scorpion hits Martel 3532
Scorpion scores a critical hit 360
total 3892
Crit% 9.250%
Spinner hits Martel 3556
Spinner scores a critical hit 363
total 3919
Crit% 9.263%
Crab hits Martel 3002
Crab scores a critical hit 212
total 3214
Crit% 6.596%
Tiger hits Martel 3459
Tiger scores a critical hit 341
total 3800
Crit% 8.974%
With the exception of the Crabs, all the mobs were pretty well right around 9~10%. And I don't think the samples sizes weren't big enough to be certain of the difference between 9% and 10%. But with merits and one piece of ecrit- I'll floor them regardless of mob dDEX.
I also have a parse of some Limbus runs(lvl 130) on DRG, but I had my ecrit merits for that, and had an ecrit- ring in my pulling set, so it's not too surprising that I had them at 1% crit rate there. Honestly, I might have them floored anyway. 5 levels lower than sheol C, and I have like 33~46 more agi on DRG in my pulling set/TP gear than the PLD test set I used in Sheol C. But I don't really know, since most of the hits would have been while wearing the puling set which should floor them regardless.

Not relevant for pulling, but this made me think about whether monster TP moves could have "chance of crit varies with TP."
Monstrosity is probably a bad model for this because monster TP moves take a fixed amount of TP there and thus have no discernable TP mod, which I'm pretty sure isn't how real monster TP moves work, but I only found these mentioning crit-y things:
* Foot Kick - deals critical damage
* Blink of Peril / Hell Scissors - deals severe damage
Reducing crit rate doesn't seem like it would help with either of these.
idk if we can draw any conclusions from that, but can anyone think of a monster WS that can crit?
Perhaps charming a Rarab with pet regen gear and testing it out would be a start, assuming Charm doesn't change things.

Spiders with sickle slash comes to mind.
Less accessible: Ngai because that *** randomly one shots me on PLD somehow.

I thought Sickle Slash was DAs (Spiders are mostly WARs) and not crits.

Underrated pulling feet nobody ever mentions or uses (if your job can use it)

Re: forced crits, and largely monsters in general. A big thing that I do nowadays in ffxi is parse monsters to fill in the gaps in knowledge that eiyuu wiki and studio gobli left (like how subjobs for monsters work below level 50, that sort of thing) and to be honest I'm not actually sure whether monster tp moves truly scale with tp.
The melee ones might, but in surveying most monster families that exist stuff like magic tp moves (and definitely breath spells, obviously) don't seem to have any discernible tp mod. I tend to think that it is in fact double attack like byrth said, instead of crits.
Re: monstrosity: there's definitely a lot of moves in monstrosity that just don't translate, funguar being the main example that comes to mind. Their breath moves just are a completely different formula for monsters.
Monipulators also often have weird job combinations so you can get some false positives. Diremites there are DRK/BLM for example, whereas your typical diremite is a DRK/DRK.
There's a lot of quirky stuff like that out there.

The reason mob moves don't vary with tp is they (almost) always hold tp to 300% until hp is 50% and 200% at 25% (or close enough without wiking)
If moves vary by tp they would always get weaker as they got closer to dying. That'd be silly.
...It'd probably cause some balancing chaos as well, every first tp move is 3x stronger than the next, how would they have compensated.

Help me understand the fishing situation in SSG.
On both BG wiki and FFXIclopedia(So I assume it was just copy/pasted), the fishing guide lists both a lake AND a pond at J-12. For the life of me, I can't find anything except a single body of water. What am I missing? Did someone accidentally label the body of water both a lake and a pond and no one corrected it? Am I missing a body of water here? What's the deal?

Is there any monster in the game that gives higher zeni per plate than Nauls/Sandworms?

That's definitely confusing but the body of water is singular
The pond loot pool is within the lake loot pool.

A mystery with no answer. The wikis go back and forth.
4 spots, 2 lakes, 2 ponds, J12 is a lake but referred to as pond

Might depend on what his "favorite" thing is, that he's looking for, that could push things higher or lower. I've found that Naul are sick though.

It's saltwater and underground. I don't think either term is accurate.
