I'm curious if anyone does this?
I have been considering a second account for a while now, and had intended to pick up a cheap laptop at some point in the near future.
However I have heard of some people playing multiple accounts from a single computer, with multiple monitors (I used to think this was impossible on account of POL closing down if you try and open it a second time).
I'm not very tech savvy, and I'm wondering how somthing like this would be set up? Any special requirements? Or Whether its even worth the hassle for a computer noob like me?

Windower is the only requirement. I run 2 accounts with 1 monitor.
The only problem you might have is the amount of stress it can put on your PC (depending on whether or not you tweak things like your graphics settings).
To use multiple accounts on one PC, you simply open Windower twice and log into each account (has to be under Administrator or with a UAC disabled - I chose the latter personally).

Like people said before me, just use windower and it allows you to open Pol multiple times.
You have to alt-tab between them, but that's totally fine once you get used to it.
I use one\two monitors depending on if my gf uses the TV, and both works just fine :3
(Just gotta adjust aspect ratio ingame to fit the screens)

I have never touched the windower, I didnt know you could do that with it. I might look into it and see how my computer handles it before blowing money on a laptop.
Thanks for the help.

Just out of curiosity (sorry like I say I'm a complete computer noob) if I do use a second monitor (We still have an old spare from our first computer), I wont need to alt/tab between windows anymore?
Also will there be any controller conflicts if I used two controllers?

XPadder is a driver that allows you to customize button commands on a controller. Even allowing Alt-Tab to be a single button, say the back button on a Microsoft xbox controller.

You don't even need that hot of a laptop to do it either. I went and got a "middle of the road" Gateway from BestBuy and it runs 2 accounts just fine. 3-boxing though, it acts like it wants to explode..

Use one controller with switchmon. Works great.

Edit: I have a dual monitor setup, and usually play with one window on each screen. Last night I was farming and watching stuff, so I put both on one monitor. It can be annoying if your characters aren't in the same area, but not a big deal.

You do need to alt-tab to control the other char, but with 2 monitors atleast you can watch them both at the same time :)
Handy if you do 2 separate things on them, and don't just have your mule on follow :P

there's a way I've been working on to get around it and be able to use two controllers, but I'm having issues with directx...
I need to do more reading, or maybe another computer, think I may be having issues with my laptops card. (1gb of dedicated graphics be damned it still is giving me ***)...

Just roll with multiple windows open and practice to improve your alt-tabbing reflexes. Knowing where each character is at all times, what they should be casting or where they need to be positioned, and having very complete spellcast files is essential to any multiboxing imo. Even if you don't feel comfortable with computers in general, multiboxing on the same screen is predominantly about multitasking, memory, and reflexes, not technological knowhow.

I'm doing this now. I have an Asus Laptop and a 2nd monitor hooked up to it. You will need windower and when you connect the monitor you need to edit display settings. My settings are... Landscape and then Extend these Displays. Basically the 2nd monitor is to the right of my first. So if i move my mouse all the way right ill be in my 2nd monitor same with moving windows around. Alt-Tab also works that way.

Back when I was rolling on Leviathan with exo, I used to run up to 6 characters on one monitor/pc. It gets stressful cycling through the windows, but If you have any midgrade gaming PC you should be able to run 2 instances of windower no problem

I just alt tab, or use mmultisend. It allows commands to be sent from one instance or FFXI to another.
/console send mulename //cure6 othername
Would let you cure from your mule onto another person. Dualboxing would not be worth it to me if I couldn't use multisend.

It's really easy. My PC can run like 12+ characters at once. It's all easy depending on your PCs CPU RAM and GPU. Get windower. Be aware though since you're running off the same IP your transfer data can sometimes jumbo up and crash one of your windows. Happened to me a few times. Example sometimes you see each others chat logs. It's funny really, but the more you expand your chat log the bigger the probability your client will crash so keep that in mind.

One thing that can change that is have a separate folder of ffxi for each char. The logs are stored on your computer, so if you separate the folders it separates the chat logs, it may help, it may not.

the chatlog thing can be fixed by running it in a sandbox. There is a program on windower that does it.

Windower Sandbox

Hey lilsanchez, what are your computer specs? I have a 64-bit, 6gb ram, Intel Core i7-2675QM CPU @ 2.20GHz Samsung. How many accounts do you think it can handle? I'm looking to multi-box about 10 accounts.

This be how I trio-box.
I find it easier to control my three characters if they are all on the same screen. But that's just me.
If you are going to try multi boxing, finding a routine that works for you and your play style is the most important part to make it work.

Used to quad box salvage. Just windower and alt tabbing. Was always funny when over vent our leader would call cells and say "1st weapon to Wulfie" and I'd be like "Which Wulfie?" just to screw with him cause of course I knew which character got what. Lol

Yeah I triple box myself. Just make sure your PC can handle it (enough RAM, good CPU, etc.) Hehe I do get the occasional crash on Windower and finding which POL.exe process to end is a guess and some times I end the wrong one lol.

My computer only has 1 gig of ram and I'm able to tribox without any other applications open. Unless your computer is beyond terrible, you will have no issues with multiboxing.
