I don't have a mac or a ps3.
How would I go about setting this up for my brother?

If he's trying to stream from Mac to PS3, I believe there is a Mac version of PS3 Media Server. I forgot how to setup PS3 Media Server, but I think it should find it if both are devices are on the same network.

And yes, you can stream .mkv from PC/Mac to your PS3(among other devices) with it. last time I used it, I had some issues that i don't recall, now I have a laptop though so I can just watch from it :D
