I found this on the German forum and thought this would be a fun topic here as well.

When you think of FFXI, what storyline do you like the most? What did you like about it? What did you find better about that storyline over the others?

First choice would be none of them second I guess would be TOAU cuz Odin was cool and the amount of running was limited.

Storyline.. hmmm. That rules out Promathia which was random as all hell. I'd almost have to say that Wings of the Goddess was my favorite. Time travel is just a cool subject.

I Liked WOTG just because it was fun to run around at first to find the new areas and to find passage to towns. The story line i thought wasnt bad, Cutscenes where pretty cool like the CS with Fenrir.

I enjoyed Zilart for the insight it gave into the background of the world's mythology, among other things.

Any expansion had a storyline besides CoP?

I can tell you I liked the storyline behind the taru family least:

http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Family_Ties

Those poor tarus seperated forever T.T

Zilart/Promathia > Wings > Aht

Zilart and Promathia should be grouped together as the events of CoP happen the second the adventurer resolves the conflict present in Zilart. Bahamut pops outta the sea and the Al'taieu crystal is allowed to briefly communicate with the rest only because Elde'narche messed with the line after his defeat.

Promathia got as close to an offline FF as possible within the constraints of the online environment. Most of the cast were fleshed out, had relevance to the storyline and were likable. You had spunky Prishe, her quiet buddy Ulmia, the voice of reason in Tenzen, the noble savage Jabbos, the rogue Louverance, former enemies turn allies in the Shikaree and 'big sister' Esha'ntarl.

You had a typical 'save the world' story, battles were tough, the zones were creative from the alien feel of Promyvion, the floating regions of Riverne right down to the ancient ruins of Pso'xja, the Lunarian feel of Lumoria and the fight with Promathia above the planet Vana'diel.

SE seems to agree as Prishe got to represent FFXI in Dissidia.

I enjoyed Promathia the most. The one thing I find to be the most interesting is how they tied it together with Abyssea. Just the whole idea of "If you failed, this is what happens" appealed to me for some reason and added to the story more.

*edit because it sounded stupid...

wings of the goddess, nothing else compares. the fascination of war accompanied by the hilarity of mayakov, the tale of love between portia and ragelise(and by extension, lilith and lilisette for their parents), the strife on all sides, and the resulting knowledge that the expansion gave itself. i always liked promanthia a lot, but wings of the goddess will always be the better story. it had so many different aspects that it's hard not to adore the storyline. although, i wished returning to the past would be more fulfilling than i thought it'd be, the storyline certainly triumphed all others.

i always found myself laughing and saying '*** mayakov' whenever he was in a cutscene, idk why i found it so funny :(

I really wish they didn't skip Promathia in the revamps :/ Using the Promyvion areas for something new, or Pso'xja would've been nice.

I did like the extra effort they did with the actual singing in that cut scene at the end.

COP so far, but WOTG may take it's place. Just started doing those missions last week and loving it so far.

Though, Prishe > all

Edit: If past Prishe shows up in WoTG, It'll auto move to first place.

I think the advantage of Zilart/CoP is that the new zones actually supported the storyline through their design. I'll always remember the first day I spent in Tavnazia Safehold talking to these poor people who had been cut off from the outside world for so long and were completely surrounded by fearsome mobs. I really felt that story. Going to the Aqueducts or Sacrarium was always eerie as you were constantly looking over your shoulder for the ghosts of those fallen during the assault and devastation of the war. Entering Sky/Sea always felt like you were ascending to some higher plane as you explored ancient/divine realms full of mystery and unknown danger. The zones from the other expansions were beautiful but somehow seemed to lack some of the purpose-built glory that I enjoyed in the earlier expansions.

WOTG was a largely story driven expansion whereas the rest were largely content driven. I don't see how there's even a comparison.

People who haven't completed WOTG shouldn't be allowed to vote lol

Purely from a story angle, WOTG.

Throwing areas and characters into it, CoP wins out. Nothing was more awesome than being a samurai myself and getting the killing shot in on Tenzen my first fight through back in the day.

TOAU was the only disappointment and that was largely because the conclusion was rushed.

TOAU was a dissapointment because the corsairs didn't sail in and blow that crappy empire to bits. Blue mages and puppetmasters and pathetic Mithran excuses for mercenary captains.

I loathe that place.

I did enjoy TAU immensely story-wise, but in the end WOTG (with all the city missions, Windy in particular) was my fave. It has the best CSes, most epic story (even manages to one-up the "OMG save the world" storylines of COP and TAU) with nice mind-blowing moments (no spoilers!) which is quite surprising given how generally jaded gamers are by now to MMO storylines.

It really invests you into the outcome (i.e. once you get past the mandatory first 15 or so missions that set up the plot and characters) and makes you appreciate the characters.

i think when shantoto calls her "pup" it's refering to her as child, not an actual Puppetmaster.
