Only a few select models were made when the PS3 first came out that made them compatible with PS2 games, sadly all of the newer models don't come with that feature. So you would have to search for a used console and try to track one down in order to get FFXI working on there.

you'd be better off buying a used ps2 with hdd on ebay (or somewhere)
the ps3 60gb (or 20 or first 80) are too expensive and are prone to ylod and unless you want to take it apart remove thermal compound and use a heat gun on it for a few minutes and put new thermal paste on and put it back together, or a possible psu failure as the caps are getting old.
I went through the trouble of getting a 60gb ps3 and I kind of regret it... (didn't have $600 laying around at the time of release and wasn't anticipating on Sony removing features that fast)
edit: Mine ylod a few months after getting it, however in that time I did learn that I can rebuy a game I already own 3 copies of, play it between it and my psp and then put the save on a usb stick, transfer it to pc, extract it and use either psx memtool to convert it to a pc save or use my dexdrive to put it on a PSX memory card to play on my actual PSone with the screen :D and still realize the shooter minigame in gold saucer sucks balls, I need a JP kid to beat it for me

oh and to clarify only the first 60gb, 20gb and 80gb can support ffxi I thought only the 60 could but I have since been told the other two can as well.
the 60gb has the ps2's emotion engine in it (ps2 hardware)
the 20 and 80 software emulate
as to why none of the later models have it, it's simple: greed.

It still baffles me why sony made the decision to *** us over and not keep the emulation software on newer models.
They could potentially make more money but I guess their heads are so far up their *** to realize that.

they'd rather make more money off reselling digital titles than keeping their loyal fans happy, I'm sure a few members probably protested but that's the problem with big business it's all about the bottom line.

I play on ps3. advice given to this point is accurate. The only thing I would reccomend is if your heart is set on ps3, is go looking in pawn shops. a lot of people don't know/care that the earlier models were backwards compatible. my heterosexual life partner had his basckwards compatible ps3 die, & found a new one at the pawn shop for like 80 bucks.

what happened to it and do you still have it?
I need some 60gb ps3 parts, friend of mine tore his apart to get his game out when it just ylod'd...
not to mention the psu's are fixable usually by a few caps, but not by somebody who can't solder...

I can ask him tonight, & get back to you tomorrow. he's kind of wierd, and keeps a lot of out dated ***, so possibly
*edit* I'm pretty sure we both had 80g, idk if that makes a difference for you

ok so i'm willing to shell out a few bucks for a PS2 with a hard drive (not really just for xi BUT I can also give that a shot) would a PS2 slim work or does it have to be the fat one?
I know nothing really about the PS2 slims other then they are ... well... slim.

Just a general question, but did Sony ever explain why they decided against PS3 supporting PS2 games?
Quote: "Now that we're at a point where we're three years into the lifecycle of the PS3," he told us earlier today, "there are so many PS3 disc-based games that are available that we think — and noticed this from our research — that most consumers that are purchasing the PS3 cite PS3 games as a primary [reason]".
"And it's not just like 50 or 60 percent. It's well into the 80 or 90 percentile range who are purchasing it for PS3 [games]. We do know that there are next gen consumers wanting to come over the the PS3. Most of those are consumers who have not utilized their PS2 for a little while and they're ready to jump into the PlayStation 3."
Got this from here: Sony Explain Why The PS3 Slim Has No Backwards Compatibility.

I might be way off, but aren't PS3 games Bluray and PS2 basically DVD's?
A Bluray player can play DVD's, just doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me. I think the PS3 can play PS1 games too...

They dropped support because the emulation of PS2 games was costing too much time/effort to program for no return.

I mean puh-lease the time it takes to implement the code into the software of the PS3 is... just negligible.

It can play PSX games, but I also remember (but can't find anything to back it up) that they took it out to lower the PS3's cost. Don't quote me on that tho.
Regardless, it's some hilarious yet face palming excuses that they have put out for why PS2 support was taken off the PS3.

the last version of the PS3 that was backwards compatible was the version that Metal Gear Solid 4 was bundled with. even a few before and all after we not backwards compatible with HDD games. the link below will take you to a model comparison chart. only the models that show hardware or software PS2 compatibility will work

I'm going to guess they were pulling a poor attempt at trolling. Considering Sony, when they had the PS2 support on PS3, have never updated the code in any way. It's sitting on "the ps2 game either runs or it doesnt" stand at the moment (and was when it first came out).

I really hope they were.
I swear people need to complain, and complain HARD to sony, it just does not make sense to do that.
They just want to hold out for moneys sake tbh, I'm not against buying a PS2 really it's just the fact that I would love to NOT have to.

To anwser ur question, only the 20GB, 60GB, and Metal Gear Solid 4 Edition 80GB will play ps2 disc. You do need to download a the PS2 HDD patch for free from the PS Store under the add-on section. Then you can install the discs.

fat
some of the slims have the pins for the ide connector but none of them have it on them, you need a fat and the network adapter.
Good luck, best bet is to see if somebody is willing to part with theirs, cuz you'll need the discs too from what I understand.
I'm assuming you have the ps2 version of the game already.

that works then, just make sure it claims it's all in working condition and pay with paypal, they're awesome with giving money back if it's not as described.
I'd invest in a usb keyboard and maybe an usb extension, wireless usb keyboards aren't worth it imo
I'm about to switch back to the ps2 cuz it will actually work on dialup and that's all I can get where I live now...

WROOOOONG
20GB is SAME motherboard as 60GB. It lacks WIFI and memory card slots on the front. That's why 60GB is "CECH A" and 20GB is "CECH B".
80GB models that play PS2 range from "CECH C" to "CECH E".
Europe never had models with EE chip. They got "CECH C" as the 60GB model.
