Haha... I love how quickly this thread devolved into a borderline personal attack. Thanks to all those who made an attempt at answering my questions... cheers :)
Welcome to ffxiah! And I hope you got what you were after.
Reaffirming my decision to leave things as is. If my comments were taken as a personal attack, I see no reason to believe I would make even a dent in the issue.
I was pretty sure it was just more or less saying don't assume you can't get a empy for being casual. I'm atm casually working on Kannagi. Going to claim guku when it's not camped especially with new content, then killing sobek here and there. Take it as you will /shrug
I typed up a long post, but all it really said was that people have different goals, standards, and a different idea of "fun" in FFXI (and life and general). If he doesn't want to work towards an empy, he doesn't have to... he can still have fun doing the things he enjoys most in this game without it.
In before the "well he should just play the game without gear then, lololol"

You seem to have forgotten that he made a thread requesting information on micro maximization.
What I don't get is, why even respond to this thread if you don't want to help him with his question?
Unless you assume telling him he should get a vere is helping.
Why do you assume getting a verethragna isn't helping? He was giving him an alternative, as was I, to think about. Everyone has their own ways of helping. People already stated what ws he should get based off that. Not much more you can offer in that department.

No, the question was: is this a 'how do I improve my MNK' thread? No. This is a 'which WSs should I merit? Here are my jobs:...'

Quite the opposite actually, I just wanted to know which WSs weren't a waste of merits w/o getting into the finer points of, "well, if you already have weapon A, coupled with pieces B, C and D, and you're in situation E as opposed to F, then weapon skill G will out perform weapon skill H." That's pretty much all I could find on forums... and that's perfectly fine, it's a very valid conversation, and one that, years ago, I would have loved pouring over in my spare time. It's that kind of stuff that makes me appreciate this game and its incredible depth.
But now, 8 years in, I suppose you could say I've lost my patience for many aspects of the game and jumping though SE's hoops (like collecting 50 Ulhuadshi Fangs). So, since of lost my taste for certain finer aspects of the game, I tried (although, possibly, unsuccessfully) to frame my question as a "casual" player.
If you're not comfortable and/or able to give a generalized answer, that's fine too. However, implying that it's wrong of me to even ask such a question is pretentious at best.
I'm disinterested in changing any one person's choices on such a fundamental level, but it also begs the question of why he's unable or unwilling to seek partnership in a game that is relatively unforgiving to those who choose to disassociate themselves from the rest of the playerbase. I'm not prepared to tell anyone that their Lone Ranger playstyle is inappropriate, because it's well within their rights, but as I said, pragmaticism isn't isolated.
Pragmaticism? Really? I just can't take you seriously if this is the kind of nonsense you think makes you appear intelligent.
Seems like looking down your nose has caused you to go cross-eyed.
Its astonishing how quickly "...he's well within his rights..." turns into an implicit attack on the legitimacy of your priorities. I didn't think or imply that there was an issue with your question. I explicitly said that I didn't care to change your in-game decisions. My only quarrel, which is an overstatement in and of itself, was with the inappropriate and often cited established dogma that casual players cannot create Empyrean weapons.
When so many of you take from my posts exactly what it is you want to, its no wonder I'm so often called condescending.

Check your tone, douche-whistle.
(btw - "Pragmaticism" isn't a word)

"You cannot create (an) Empy weapon(s), hence you're casual" is what I've heard more than "I'm casual, hence I cannot create (an) Empy weapon(s)"
Whatever logic brings you to the latter, need to be eviscerated.

That is all.
The audacity you must have to continue to critique my manners while using personal attacks.

I thought this was a very nice thread before you stank it up with imaginary words and elitist jabbering.
Honestly I'd add that you're pretentious as well, but I don't believe I know you well enough to make that claim. Besides, points for any Stephen Fry reference, however unrelated to my claims.
Sometimes I feel as if this website has its own spin on the Trueman Show. I explicitly said that I'm not interested in changing anyone's playstyle, because there's zero inherent issue in it. I explicitly said that his question was a perfectly legitimate one, and that I wished to deter it no longer. Then you roll in and call me a "douche-whistle", and I'm the antagonist. This is lunacy.
You can like each other's posts all you like. The fact remains that I not only specified that there's no reason to force him to make a lick of adjustment, but that there was additionally nothing wrong with his question. A portion of my posts were hypothetical, and in regard to something said by a different person entirely.
But hey, keep calling me names while telling me that I'm a meany. I enjoy non sequitur.

"Its cuz you don't provide constructive criticism and if you do, its in a really condescending tone"
I challenge any of you to explicitly show that I was being condescending and not just taking greater advantage of language, as I very much enjoy. Please.

Whenever someone disagrees with you (regardless of whether or not they are objectively wrong), you always say something like "it's astonishing," "absurd," "lunacy," etc. If English is your first language - which that flag next to your name seems to suggest - you know how these words come across.

I don't dislike you or think you are the least bit mean. You are careless in your use of language and have a lofty attitude. I didn't feel you were being helpful to the OP. That's really all there is to this.
You can stop acting hard done by. The name calling (and it wasn't really so bad was it?) stopped with a single post. Why continue to wreck this thread by being oblivious to some very constructive advice?
Your words and how you arrange them say as much about how you feel about your audience as the message you supposedly intended.

ftfy~ If you insist on using such a tone, proper punctuation helps with the delivery. :D
All this being said, thank you for the contributions that you do undeniably make to the forums.^^
That's funny, because I could have sworn the words you've take issue with were used after I was told I was being rude. Context makes all of the difference.
And again, I'm having my grammar corrected on a forum while being called condescending. As I said, lunacy.
I'm wondering which new WSs I should merit? Here's a few items you may want to take into consideration:
- I have 17 jobs between 91 and 99. Not leveled are: PUP, COR, SCH
- As much as I hate this term, I'm a "casual" player.
- As such, I've been happily LS-less for almost 2 years, so, gear-wise, if it's post-75 and I can't buy it off the AH, I probably don't have it.
- In the past year, or so, I've spent most my time EXP'ing/meriting in Abyssea
- However, I don't have very many (good) Atmas
- I also don't have any quested/weapon-based weapon skills outside of the old school, level 71 ones (Evisceration, Asuran Fists,Steel Cyclone, etc.)
- The jobs I play the most (recently anyway) include: WAR, MNK, DNC, PLD
The great katana WS was a bit of a no-brainer, and I got that to 5/5 yesterday. Now I'm trying to figure out which other two are worth meriting. I've heard the dagger one is pretty good, so, I'm leaning heavily towards that. I think I've also heard archery/marksmanship is pretty good too, but I very, very rarely play RNG (and COR's not level'ed). So, I'm considering hand-to-hand, since I play MNK a lot and might level PUP eventually... I'm also considering pole-arm, almost simply because it's STR based.
