I currently have the newest version of VirtualBox and the additions that you can download there, and the guest additions installed.

I am hoping to get this to work with FF VII PC (and the patches)

Also to get this working with FFXI. (windower too)

(Hopefully getting XI to run in VB it would enable Mac users to use windower without needing to switch os, but would also enable dualbox (tribox+) users to bind USB ports to the guest os, enabling them to have multiple monitors and controllers and controlling several characters at once without the use of alt+tab)

I finally have all devices installed via Device Manager, working on getting 3d working, so far the only thing that passes in 7's config is the 8bit textures (which is hilarious since when I used to play it on PC that's the only thing that WOULDN'T pass and it played)

I'm assuming I have to fiddle with directx now, since I installed the guest additions afterward, I may have to reinstall directx...

(at school right now without my laptop so I can't actually fiddle with it)

anyone have any experience playing with this?

I've never used it but I'll certainly give some things a try. Not all that familiar with VMs though.

after the windows guest os is installed you'll want to mount the .iso file in the program's folder to a virtual drive (under storage management in settings) to install the guest additions, and enable the 3d acceleration (the guest OS has to be in safe mode)

XP is probably the best bet to use, since newer os's require more power.

I'm more familiar with messing with the internals of XP anyway. Granted, I kinda suck when it comes to virtual boxes but it'll be good "work" experience lol...

Does virtual box directly allocate computer resources to the box or does it have to go through the windows 7 os first?

Sounds like it's not in the highest setting for color bit. Sounds like its on 16-bit rather than 24-bit. I have no idea how to change that in VM, so good luck ; ;

when you set up the machine you set the hdd space ram, video ram etc

as for the video it's supposed to (with the settings in place w/ guest additions installed and acceleration enabled) use the hardware card as much as possible, whether or not it passes the host os I'm not sure...

Haven't tried to actually play it yet, but I shouldn't on this computer.

yeah for some reason when I run the config for ff7 or xi it says it's in 16bit, when it's set to 32, it looks like I'll have to find the source of that issue

Hmm, considering it can run a 64bit guest on a 32 bit host, I can't imagine it's piggybacking on the os.

As far as the color:

Quote:
Add the following registry key to the virtual PC's registry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Terminal Services]
"ColorDepth"=dword:00000004

Reboot the virtual machine and you'll have 24-bit color.

Dunno about 32 bit but it's probably a similar fix. Seems like there are quite a number of problems with color bit rates in various os combinations.

I'm running 32 guest, on 64 host but yeah it can.

that's for virtual windows xp, not virtualbox but it won't hurt to try, I'd do more research at the moment but I'm technically in class

Yeah, my ability to research and test are rather limited atm, being at work. I saw the virtual windows info but I thought that line was directed at virtual box which was why I posted it, need to stop and actually read through the threads ^^;

yeah tried it (I think as I'm not too familiar with creating registry keys) and it didn't work

interesting note when I switch it to 24bit, it sees it as 24bit but 32 still says 16
