PC monitor vs TV monitor

Sup,
I'm looking to buy either a new monitor to connect to my laptop or a bigger tv for the same purpose. I would like to play xbox and pc games on whichever one I go for. I would obviously have a bigger picture on a TV monitor, but I have heard that certain games with alot of text do not display well?
Does anybody have any advice on which would be better?
Ty.

I have a 46" LCD Samsung HDTV. I used it for everything that I play (Xbox, PS3, Computer). I haven't noticed any kind of text/display issue.

I think the only time text would be affected when comparing TV to Monitor is when you're comparing like a LCD Monitor to an SDTV. I hook up my PS3 to my computer monitor, because all I have as far as a TV goes is an SDTV and it's hard to read stuff on it.

I would say go PC monitor as those tend to have more agreeable settings and contrast rates for PC usage, especially if you intend to hook your laptop up to it.
TVs are great bang for your buck for general HD viewing purposes, but are a difficult purchase to make if you intend to use it as a monitor for a PC or laptop as video cards and their drivers tend not to get along very well.
If you want to get a TV, do lots of research on how well the model you want gets along with your hardware. I have an issue where my TV supports 120 Hz refresh rate but my PC won't allow it to go beyond 60 Hz which forces me to view things at a lesser quality.
Also my PS3 forces blu-rays to play at 24 Hz (stupid) because that's the supposed "cap" of framerate for movies; but I call *** on that.
Also I recommend monitors if you intend to have more than one in the future for panoramic or even simply extended desktop purposes. It can get awkward on a TV.

monitors are usually cheaper, however usually don't have sound built in, 1080p is 1080p, 60hz is 60hz, just watch the specs.
(that price difference is below 30" above 30" tv's are cheaper respectively)

I have a dual monitor set up atm on my PC. A 19" LCD normal computer monitor, and 52" Plasma screen TV. For FFXI the color looks MUCH better on the 19" LCD monitor, it looks strange on the plasma screen not exactly sure what to call it/what's wrong it just looks off. I've tried to go in the menu on the TV to change the setting around, but no matter what I do it just doesn't look right.
When I hook my laptop up to the plasma screen to play games it looks fine.

Sadness, mouse over text doesn't work with hotlinking ; ;

There is a reason for the vast price differential on monitors and you get what you pay for. If you can tolerate the dark, low contrast pictures of a TV or cheap monitor then do so (and get made fun of by someone like me). My father is a videophile so going low quality was never an option - pick what's best for you.

led are still lcd, just led backlit instead of florescent, lighter, thinner (better).
(cheaper to run too since they take less power)

They're supposed to have richer blacks, haven't really noticed the difference so much.
I'd go with a higher quality lcd over a lower quality led if you're going for best image. All else equal led is better but not enough to justify sacrificing quality elsewhere.

Whichever you end up getting make sure you get it at a store where you can plug in and look at the one you want and not online. The Dead Pixel Policy is a *** to deal with through internet outlets.
I ordered an LCD a few months ago from newegg and it had 1 dead pixel near the center of the screen at arrival and over 3 weeks 2 more died. I was not able to RMA or send it back because it didn't have the required '5 to 8 dead pixels' the policy requires. (which I had no idea was there until I got the invoice email that had the link..)
You can kill off pixels manually to meet the requirement but you'll still pay 60$ to ship it back to them if you do it while it's still under warranty.

Monitors all the way, TVs tend to have higher response times to.
LED backlit are the best because of the high contrast and clear colours over LCD.
LCD's tend to have 1,000 - 100,000 contrast, good quality LEDs have 2,000 - 24,000,000 contrast

After Hurricane Irene my last monitor died and had no warranty or anything because I got it cheap online.
So I did the smart thing and got a wide screen LCD that was on sale at a local Staples with an additional 1 year warranty after the manufacture's one wears off. Which by the way, they don't replace, but instead give you a VISA card for the amount of the purchase price in case it does die.

psh I refuse to pay retail for a screen, prices are just too high.
just watch where you buy, it's not that difficult...
(then again if I have any issues with the components I can replace them myself, but that's another issue...)

I just took apart that defunct monitor in the event that perhaps if I was lucky it was just a fuse. No such case. Now I'm just scrapping it for copper and precious metals now.

possibly some blown caps, I haven't seen a fuse in a lcd screen yet, then again I've only looked in a few.

When I say I bought it, I mean that it was my X-mas gift from last year... and it was refurbished and not wide screen. Still a good monitor, but in the end it finally made me switch to wide screen after it died.

ah good thing it died in the long run then, and you have to be weary of refurbs, what kind was it?

My mom got it for me, but I told her about pricewatch.com to look for the cheapest price.
But now I got a sweet HP 21" widescreen with warranties and all that stuff so I'm ready if it breaks. (which of course it won't since I'm prepared, lol)
All my old videos that were in letterbox format don't look too bad when scaled to 16:9 and as for older games I still run them at 4:3 with the black boxes on the sides.

Keep in mind that the XBox 360 can't render games at 1080p, and very few PS3 games can either.
Remember, these consoles are 5-year-old technology at this point. They're rendering at 720p and up-sampling, so your 1080p television (or any PC monitor running at a higher resolution) isn't helping very much anyway.
