This is a more realistic build for your need for about $1,450 after rebates and will play just about any game maxed out at 1080p. Would also recommend buying a really nice IPS panel monitor over using a TV for one. There is a huge difference in quality when you are sitting up close.
meh, 40gb should fit it all, 80 comfortably, I'd get at least 120-160 to just not have to worry about it.
I have about 160gb used of my main hdd, but I also have a good bit of school programs on, and a couple of virtual hard disk files that take up about half my space (estimated). the machine is severely overpowered there's no doubt in that, I'm definitely jelly of any final build by this budget.

I've been doing a bunch of research on SSD's lately and the consensus seems to be that while OCZ usually makes the cheaper ones, don't go with that brand. Samsung, Crucial, and Intel are the more reliable brands in that order. Even Corsair is a better bet than OCZ.
I love my crucial ram, personally.

Just going off what tomshardware.com said was the best 120GB, but ill look a bit more, the 120 GB just seels to small for me but dun wanna go back to a 256GB, to pricey Edit: switched to this Intel 320 Series SSDSA2CW160G3K5 2.5" 160GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD), wanted a tad more space and it comes with a free copy of RAGE :). I really wanted this game lol. This one is your best bet IMO, I'm saving up for it too.

I'll keep that 1 in mind, I'm not ordering till next friday or monday so i'm sure ill make changes here and there. 120 is enough for the stuff you want, and some good extra room to not have to constantly fiddle with your main drive's space.
not trying to knock on you one bit on what you're trying to build, however from what you've said you're going to do with the machine nobody can deny that you're going a tad over the top even to the point of it being unnecesary. as for video, my comment was that they don't offer capture cards in 1080p, 1080i and 720p they do (at least none that I could find the other day), please somebody point if they know of one) that and from what I know of encoding, if you have a dedicated hardware encoding, you won't need as much power from the rest of your computer, but I may be wrong on this note as I've never played with it much. If I am right on that though, and considering the other games you want, on only a 27" monitor and not dual screening you can scale it back a lot and save some for future upgrades or even maybe a larger or an additional monitor. I don't see the point in more than 8gb of ram, even for what you're doing, unless you plan to run everything at the same time. I've run XI, 2 virtual machines and xi in a vm, and photoshop, and illustrator and indesign at the same time and I didn't even max out my 8gb on my lowend first gen i7 with only 1gb of dedicated video. (plus some other programs) I do envy your budget though as there's some technologies I'd like to try out, like rapid storage technology.

One the new features on this board i want can use 1 set of ram for one thing and another set for something else. cant remember the details but it sounded amazing, guy even went as far as saying your pc cud power out and the data cud save on that RAM even tho it went out suddenly...I dunno y not play with the new abilities while i can ^^. Now im srsly thinking bout the 6990 > 580 tho..6990 seems to beat the 580 and 590 and is same as 580 3gb price, and cheaper then 590. my only issue with 6990 to begin with was the fact of it being kinda loud, something I'm use to tho since my current PC fans r crazy loud. EDIT: also been thinking bout the x2 570 in SLI If you're worried about the 6990 being loud and since you have some money lying around.

I hit my ceiling of 4000$ (pc + peripherals + extras) but at leastt he machine will be used for actual games now, like BF3, Rage and CoD MW3..as well as alot of video editing e.t.c..now no1 can complain. lol ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 1155 is meant to be compatible with PCI 3.0 and Ivy Bridge. So I'm considering getting one of those since they are relatively cheap. But there are quite a few boards that are supposedly future proof. Most likely going to get an ASUS board and try to future proof.
ASUS PCI 3.0 Ready list. During my scouting for a new MB I found this article that made me lol MSI calls out Gigabyte I do like the z68 chipset, it is the only Sandy bridge chipset that supports smart response technology (If you're into trying it out), the only next gen chipset (currently) that has that and old pci support is the Q77, which isn't out til next year, so a current system I'd make sure it's a z68.
(for those who want the built in gpu of the cpu the z68 is the better option as the q77 isn't currently supporting it(or just isn't known) (according to wiki) socket 1155 I wont even pretend i know the dif between the chipsets, or whats gonna be common in future. Does anyone have a HD 6950 and play ffxi? im experiencing alot of game freezes lately, and im wandering if its a faulty gfx card or just maybe the architecture of the new gfx card doesnt support old games like ffxi well, because it doesnt freeze during new games like skyrimm and mw3 which i run at max setting :-(

(and there's new chipsets for it next year, so it will be there for awhile apparently) Ivy Bridge isn't meant to be coming out till Q2 2012 but they might just push it back again which is a bit annoying - but it'll be worth the wait as long as it isn't another Bulldozer fiasco :P They might even hold it off till the HDD shortage is in a better situation to ensure they get more sales - but that's just speculation on my part.

Yo can get basic boards for for your i3/i5. But you can also get nice boards for the i7 with a lot of nice features.
The odds of you ever utilizing a 2011 socket CPU to it's max are slim to none unless you really just want to get into high end overclocking for fun. I personally believe the socket 1155 will be around longer because of the wider range of use it will have, it's not just targeted at the top of the top but every range between low and high end. |
