this mobo has 4 slots, i'm only using 2, and btw 8gs its already overkill, most games cant reach 2gb usage, and for multimonitor you want 2 graphic cards with the highest ram u can find
By oncura 2011-12-02 21:42:46
EVGA GTX 570 HD 340
EVGA P67 FTW 250
I-5 2500k 220
power supply around 65
1tb hdd 110
phantom case 140
ram 75
CPU cooler 75
DVD drive 20
Thats nearly 1300 dollars, add the price of your choice in keyboard/mouse, monitor/tv, SSD and any misc. custom accesories u might want.
this worked wonderful for me, powerful maxing any game with no lag at all, silent and hell of a view for my room.
I'll keep that in mind in case i flop out on what im doing, I do like that motherboard actually ima throw that in the mix.

Cerberus.Evilpaul said: »I'd avoid SLI/CFX. You'll need to have driver profiles added for it (usually) and there can be problems with micro-stuttering. Micro-stuttering is caused by synchronizations problems with the alternate frame rendering that both solutions use to have two GPUs work together and one's frame ends up being on screen signficantly longer than the other's. So you paradoxically get high FPS and choppy graphics.
The sweet spot in graphics cards at the moment is a Geforce 560 Ti 448 (shop around; different manufacturers cards are run at different clockspeeds and different cooling solutions that vary quite a bit in noise and effectiveness) or Radeon HD 6870 (they tend to stick to AMD's reference designs). You can get much faster cards for more money, but depending on your monitor resolution it may be overkill.
Also, for a gaming PC you can save $100 on your CPU and go with a Core i5 2600K...there's very little difference in games. ( http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083/the-sandy-bridge-review-intel-core-i7-2600k-i5-2500k-core-i3-2100-tested/20 )
When u speak of SLI/CFX u mean the motherboard or the vid. card? and i decided that becuz of the monitor rice ima just get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889262140 Thats assuming tho that y set up has the hdmi slot..seems i didnt look..or dunno how lol.. this thing even worth it as a monitor? i love vizio all my 55"s are vizio despite ppl saying they suck. or shud i stick to a monitor..sry for more questions i just rly want the best for my buck.
SLI its the name given when u pair 2 or more Nvidia graphics cards together
Crossfirex its for radeon cards
if your going that path make sure the motherboard support either configuration
if you really want the best bang for the buck go asrock P67 mobo extreme4 gen 3, Gskill 8g ram, 2500k cpu, gtx 560ti GPU, and your choice of other components

SLI/CFX require motherboard support as well as two compatible video cards.
You can generally use HDTVs as monitors. You just probably don't want to use a large one as looking back and forth (if you're seated near it) can cause neck/eye strain. The one you linked has HDMI ports and a VGA port so it should work all right.
My ideal monitor would be an LCD with an IPS panel and 16:10 aspect ratio. Probably this if I had some money/a job.

Just when I think i have a handle on my build finnaly it goes all *** eyed again and im bouncin from wall to wall tryin to figure out what works with what, and what do i need to do it, lets say for arguement sake, no dual monitor in any foolowing arguement. so maybe that help with the selection a lil.
I can live with 8GB RAM if it makes it easier to.
Sry im so indecisive i just really dont know much about PC's these days.

Can we agree now? I know the monitor is pricey, and i went with the 16GB ram neways cuz ram so cheap, or i cud put 2 in, hold other 2 as back ups for w/e reason. I also went with the 580 cuz 90% the places i look, even tho its pricey, seems to be the best or top 3. Dont think i forgot anything, cept a bluetooth adaptor (if it needs it) and a keyboard...or a modem not sure if it has 1 or those r always extras u have to throw in.

Here's my cheap gaming PC I set up this year for around $600:
CPU: AMD HDZ955FBGMBOX Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Processor - Quad Core, 3.20GHz, 6MB L3 Cache, 2MB L2 Cache, Socket AM3, 125W, Fan, Retail, Unlocked
RAM: Kingston KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX HyperX Desktop Memory Kit - 8GB (2 x 4GB), PC3-12800, DDR3-1600MHz, 9-9-9-27 CAS Latency, Intel XPM Ready
Graphics Card: EVGA 01G-P3-1556-KR GeForce GTX 550 Ti Video Card - 1024MB, GDDR5, PCI-Express 2.0 (x16), 2x Dual-Link DVI-I, 1x Mini-HDMI, DirectX 11, Dual-Slot, SLI Ready
Power Supply: OCZ ModXStream Pro Power Supply - 600-Watt, Modular, Dual +12V Rails, SATA, 80Plus
Hard Drive(HDD): WD Caviar Blue 500GB SATA Hard Drive - 7200/16MB/SATA-6G
CD Drive (Don't go with this, you want the blue ray player): Asus DRW-24B3ST/BLK/G/AS Internal 24x CD/DVD Drive - DVD±R 24x, DVD+RW 8x, DVD-RW 6x, DVD±R DL 12x, DVD-RAM 12x, CD-R 48x, CD-RW 24x, SATA, 1.5MB, Black
Case: Cooler Master RC-310-SWN1-GP Elite 310 Mid-Tower Case - ATX, MicroATX, 120mm Fan, 4x 5.25 Bays, 7x 3.5 Bays, USB, Black/Silver
Motherboard: MSI 990FXA-GD80 AMD 9 Series AM3+ Motherboard - ATX, Socket AM3+, AMD 990FX Chipset, 2133MHz DDR3 (O.C.), SATA 6.0 Gb/s, RAID, 8-CH Audio, Gigabit LAN, SuperSpeed USB 3.0, SLI/CrossFireX Ready
Additional Parts~
Thermal Gel- Masscool STARS-700 Silver Color Thermal Grease (Didn't need, but bought anyways in case I decide to "play" with CPU).
Dynex keyboard and mouse set : $20, self-ex.
Mini HDMI to HDMI cable: Needed this to connect it to my TV.
Mistakes I made on this system:
(Absolutely none, I got most of this stuff for dirt prices and that's how I put it together for under $700)
(For demonstration purposes we'll say I made mistakes)
CPU: Intel's i5+ outperform almost everything by AMD, however Intel's price is generally higher.
RAM: This RAM is a *** beast, there was no mistake made outside of I could have gotten a single card with 16Gb x2 @ 32 Gb RAM, but it woulda cost almost $200 or $300 more.
Graphics: Card is great, but compared to the newest toys on the shelf this falls far behind, my FPS rate when I unsync the card and run it with precision tuner at custom 1(won't go into details) puts me at 200 fps(games at full "quality" - no custom light enhancements on), on most High Def games. Choppy on games like FFXIV (think it has something to do with my internet connection, on Standard Quality I get lag segments or something ((4mb/s connection).
Power: Cheap, makes too much noise, does its job. Put money into this, please. (Make sure your power supply can support your system).
HD: Cheap, great for budget gamer. Go with higher RPM and everyone says higher cache is better (still can't figure out why). Also read into SSD vs HDD: http://elitepcbuilding.com/ssd-vs-hdd
I personally plan on looking into trying out a SSD in the near future. (Just to compare performance).
CD: Skip this, cheap, effective. Buy the blue ray etc drive. (look into the speeds it can read / write though when buying).
Case: Don't ask me, I'm an idiot when it comes to cases, I just make sure I can fit the motherboard in it and it's good enough to keep the PC cool enough to run for extended periods.
Motherboard: If you go look up the specs on it, you'll understand why I went with this, awesome board and everything I currently have can be upgraded beyond what is currently running. (Works for AMD processors only, don't buy this with an Intel core).
I hope this helps clear some stuff up, along with giving ideas as to what to look for in a gaming PC.

That build looks good, great monitor too.
It's like a huge difference from your initial build, too lol.
I was going to suggest, like Urial, the 3GB version of your video card but that's probably going to add like an extra $100-200 onto your cost.

I'm glad to hear you say that actually ^^. I'm still making some minor tweaks here and there, like i upgraded to a 180GB SSD, maybe i can fit 1 game on there who knows, i gotta find out wat windows/xi/ffxiv wud take safely off that drive. But other then that i dont rly see what I could improve without blowin unneccesary cash for nominal gains.
and for a cheaper PC that looks nice Raborn, but this is the 1 time in the past few years i've had a 3000$ budget max for a PC so im stealing the chance ^^.
Edit: I checked that card into my list and it isn't so bad, even with the upgraded SSD and the better 580 its only 2,424$ so well within my budget, this card worth the extra 200$ tho?
By Raborn 2011-12-03 00:07:08
Considering the only thing upgraded from the 580 you are using is the memory, (Personally I wouldn't pay the extra $200 for 1.4...G more on a grahpics card).
If you are willing to put $200 more in, go with a 590 you'll thank yourself in the long run.
I wouldn't count AMD's HD6990 out either it slightly outperforms all of the GeForce models on the market in most games at its MSRP is around $699.99. And that's the 4GB model.
The only thing AMD fails to Nvidia at would be 3D rendering (currently), if you want to play stuff or watch movies in 3D GeForce is where its at.

Video card has been the bane of my existence most of this thread, i cant/couldnt decide between the 1.5 580, 3g 580, radeon 6990, or 2 radeon 6950...still havin trouble

Core Clock 772MHz 830MHz
Memory Size 3072MB 4GB
Memory Interface 384-bit 256-bit
The Power the 6990 needs as well is way more then the 580, stating 750W minimum which is the exact amount i got, but upgraded to a gold 80 rating from the bronze 80. also im sure 6990 had an hdmi, it doesnt say it does lol... so maybe you know what those numbers mean?

By oncura 2011-12-03 02:36:39
Well overclocking is something i have little experience in, even tho i want my PC to be able to do it once I learn, hoping its not needed tho for whatI'm doing with it, I'm praying the build just comes nice and smooth without those tweaks. But the awnser is as stated i wanna be able to over-clock once i learn, and have nice perforrmance w/o it

I would recommend to just skip the Western Digital VelociRaptor and get a high capacity 7200 drive for less. Since you are getting a SSD it is pointless and the speed difference from those raptors and current high capacity platter HHD is very minimal. I would recommend a Samsung F4 2tb HDD for $200 or a Seagate Momentus XT for $230. It is a 750 GB SSD hybrid HDD that will blow the raptor out the water for less money.

so much this. you are wasting money buying the 10k hdd imo. better off buying more space for less price. since your getting an SSD that has enough room for your OS and some of your everyday/daily use programs/games. the rest can just go on a high storage device, 7200rpm isn't that bad either btw. i don't know about you, but i can fill 1tb in ~6months easily. lol.

The numbers don't mean much because they're not comparing the same thing but for the hd6990 is faster than a gtx580 and a bit slower than the gtx590 I think.
The 6990 has mini-displayport and dvi... display port is a new standard and it probably has no importance to you or anyone for that matter but it comes with an adapter to hdmi if that's what you want to use.
For me, display port is great because I plug my computer into my monitor via displayport, and my ps3 goes into my monitor via dvi (sound goes into my soundcard in the computer) and I just switch the inputs on my monitor to whichever system I want to use. This means I don't have to use the shitty vga port for my computer... because who the hell uses an analog signal on a current gen video card and a hd monitor?

This is incorrect. No single/dual card needs that amount of power. Even 580s in sli dont use that much power(using GTX sli cards because nvidia cards tend to be more power consumering cards over ATI). That being said a 6990 will pull about 450-470.
The 750w is probably the card + everything else in a rig(fans/mobo/cpu/ram/HDs etc) thus you have to measure exactly how much more you're going to have in your rig.

hmm, the 6990 was my first choice, atm i have the 3gb 580 in my set up for like 500$, and i wont be getting till xmas/new years so maybe 1 of the 2 will have a sale and i can decide then. just wanna make sure im getting the best performance from the pc w/o blowin money that isnt needed to be blown, high budget or not. decided i like the motherboard that was previously mentioned, the EVGA P67. And as far as that 6990 and no hdmi, I'll have to figure out what adapter that is cuz i might just get a bravia or vizio 26" as a monitor instead.

580s 1.5 go for 500, so if you found a 3gb for 500 thats probably a good deal considering theyre about 600-700.

6990 > 580 for sure so if they cost the same, pick the 6990.
So i had this posted elsewhere to run FFXIV but in my building at Cyberpowerpc.com i decided i want to go beyond FFXIV. Not because i play anything else but because i have the money to for once in my life due to an injury settlement. So for next 2 years im house stricken and I want a beast of a machine. My price range will go anywhere up to 2000$-3000$ (preferably 200-2500$)in the spoiler below ill put what i think (with my lack of knowledge) and I'm hoping for some changes or perhaps a better build for the buck. Building a PC part-by-part isn't for me even tho it costs less, I have no knowledge of building a PC these days especially when i figure the card i chose in my build requires liquid cooling. So any advice/help from someone who knows their PC's would be immensly helpful.
This is the AMD machine:
Price 2915$ - also considering dropping th card to a ATI Radeon 6970 to save a few hundred bucks. Case: * Azza Hurrican 2000 Full Tower Gaming Case with 4 Hot Swappable HDD Cage & (4) 230MM Fans
Internal USB Extension Module: None
Extra Case Fan Upgrade: Maximum Enermax 120MM Case Cooling Fans for selected case (Maximum Silent Operation) (500-1,200 RPM T.B. Silence Black Color with Red LED Twister Bearing 8-14 dBA)
Noise Reduction Technology: Sound Absorbing Foam on Side, Top And Bottom panels
Power Supply Gasket

Any thoughts/comments about either machine is nice, I have not a clue about cards and CPU's nemore. Only what i've read being that AMD 6990 is most powerful card on the market at the moment, and the CPU race goes either way between the 2 chosen (AMD FX 8core/Intel i7 2700). I also thot about using dual medium end cards but not sure how that would stack vs 1 high end card. Sorry for long post cuz i r moron. But perhaps it could be fun for someone to help me out ^^.
