In all honesty "old school HNM" sucked balls anyways. I don't mind HNM being popped. I just wish the pop items were a bit easier to get.

Atleast look based^^. And anyway why i should let someone else claim if i can claim every time?^^ its like when u are making an empy like kannagi 85 why should i let someone claim gukumatz? I play for myself and my friends... if ppls want to find compromise they just should say: hey alternate claiming gukumatz, but still i havent found someone asking or doing that so i work for my and my friends goals You missed the point entirely. No one's saying to let others claim NM's you need. What they're saying is don't delude yourself into thinking that out-claiming someone makes you a better player than them.

^ this.
A large amount of the pro-HNM people back in the day were those who flaunted their claims (normally their bot's claims) as if it made them awesome, or made them more skilled than everyone else.

Why not actually make more content and not have horrible reused content with overly large time sinks and delayed reentry?
Oh wait, this is SE.
I'm sorry, killing something 200 times over is totally worthwhile content. My bad.

I didn't enjoy HNM's too much because my work schedule always conflicted with pop times. I like how SE is gearing the game towards casual players now. It's good to see a shift away from HNMLS's with members who somehow feel superior for having some gear someone else may have bot claimed to obtain... to a more trial of the magian situation where you had to individually "work" for your gear now.

I dont know about you, but I didn't start playing this game for the "individual work" to be a purple barney casual player. If you want that, go play WoW. The biggest reason I liked ffxi so much was for the community experience and the people I was forced to party with to get things done. Which is why I hated to see the old exp party system go the way of the dodo, and why I believe mules are killing this game. I'm also not a hardcore crazy person that gave up my life, but when I play games, I play to win. I dont do casual, maybe it's just my competitive nature.

One can use skill or lack thereof to argue for or against practically all endgame content in FFXI. The most inexperienced of players can coast through virtually anything in Vana'diel, especially these days where endgame content is more accessible than ever.

Only a handful of people kill these HNMs nowadays; for fun, nostalgia and a bit of gil. With such a small amount of people bothering with these NM's it seems pointless for SE to make these changes, 90% of the time you'll find Cerb/Khim/Hydra walking around unclaimed, Jorm is still as pointless as ever, and Cashmere price has dropped a lot, almost to the point where Vrtra isn't worth the effort.
SW/DI/Tiamat would be the only NMs that benefit people these days, maybe SE will learn from their mistakes and not implement a pop item system like they did with the Kings

claiming a nm is obviously not skill based and bots dont auto claim ***100%, if you never claimed its cause you werent persistent or you didnt have bodies
no bot was 100% and people crying about hnms are hilarious
its a video game, if you didnt liek it noone made you do it

Whatever floats your boat man. Some magian trials (empyrean) aren't "individual" either but require small groups of personnel to obtain (provided you all don't suck). Playing casually doesn't mean you don't play to win. It's more "I don't have to sit for hours at a camp to not get claim and realize I have nothing to show for all that time I just spent and know I can't get that time of my life back" anymore. You're just not required to invest insane amounts of time to accomplish similar goals.

SW is the most hard to camp for the truth 5 hrs window scanning zone... DI is a piece of cacke camp, Fafhogg, KB and Aspid were even easyer 3 hrs window and window open every 30 mins so u didnt neeed to spend 3 hrs doing nothing u just needed to focus 1 min every 30 mins... where is the insane amount of time? I bet most of the players who are arguing about the waste of time on hnms are the players who spend 5-6 hrs in jeuno doing nothing while waiting for a /shout -.-

And what we meant with "casual player" is ppls withouth any kind of skill who play 1 hr per day and feel theirself pro cause of the good gears they got in abyssea which is a real ***since it takes few work for being upgraded. On hold times if u wanted good gears u was forced to collaborate with other guys and could take months to get ur piece and this was the nice part of the game: the long waiting for ur piece was what made that piece has some special value for the player who obtained it. For example i love my homam set or duelist chapeau cause i w8ed long time to get it, now in 1 day u can get all gears u want from abyssea, but when i get a full empyrean set im not satisfied as i was when i was obtaining a rare piece from old game system.

I would say, my one hour a day has paid its dividends over the last 6 years. Casual does not mean bad, not matter how hard you want it to.

There, I just fixed the game for you - you can send me my cheque in the mail.
O_O I was filled with dread as I began reading this, but then it became more and more lulzy. Very well done, you made it sound almost legitimate.
By Diavolo 2011-11-24 10:34:30
The insane amount of time lost camping HNM's is because you aren't actually playing the game for more than 1 min every 30mins. If I sit down to play a game well, I want to actually play and not watch my screen 1min every 30mins.
Whether the wait was 3 minutes or 3 hours, I was never at a loss for something to keep myself busy with at HNM camps, be it in the game or away from it. If I was, then chances are good that I had plenty of people to chat with to pass the time.
If you wanted to maximize your play time rather than waiting around for something to pop, the better question is why were you spending so much time at camps only to later find yourself here complaining about it?
Quote: For gear, I rather have a lot to work on than working for months to get 1 piece. See that I used the word working instead of playing because that's how it felt.
I see that you used the word "work" in the present tense, too.
There's always been plenty to do in Final Fantasy XI. If you're saying that you spent months simply working to obtain a single piece of gear from HNMs without any other goals in mind then it's easy to see why you're bitter.
I've personally never used gear as a goal - the people that do tend to be the ones that quit soon after obtaining said gear and, as such, the gear is wasted on them. So it goes back to doing what you find to be entertaining, and if you don't find it entertaining just don't do it. There's some nice gear in Voidwatch, but I loathe the event so you'll be hardpressed to ever catch me participating. You won't catch me looking down on those of you do that do enjoy it either, I don't see what good would come of it.
That said, I'm hoping they handle future revisions to HNM pop conditions far better than they handled the ground kings because that was among the stupidest changes they've ever made.
Quote: Now I understand it's just my opinion and some people loved HNM's, but a lot of people saw it as not fun and felt a lot like work.
You can say the same of a lot of things, doesn't mean they should be completely removed from the game. Options and alternatives are a good thing.

Damn straight. FFXI is a ridiculously easy game at endgame and yet regardless, claiming is still the most skill-less and pointless activity used as a means for determining character progression.

Instead of whining about dated content that serves little purpose anymore being switched over to a more friendly pop system, why not whine about getting new HNMs that are actually relevant

I think spending 3 hours of time waiting for something does kinda suck. Especially when you work and are in school, 3 hours may be all the time you can afford to do anything. Waiting in line in crooked hnmls' with their "points" system for months is horrible time management. I like SE's shift away from this to keep people from monopolizing things and making the game not fun for everyone. I'm sorry man, I understand your sense of accomplishment but with a dwindling population and people moving on to other things, people can barely make large coordinated groups to do things like that anymore. Making their gear obselete is prolly just making you a little butthurt for all the time spent camping it.
As for the original op, Thank God if respawn timers are lessened.

Honestly Natenn, who cares? You carrying on about your past successes is as heartwarming as hearing the old farts at my local dive bar talk about how they were HS football gods. Your time came and went and will never come back. So brag all you want, it'll only mean something to people like you and there are less and less of you playing because you've all quit since the game has become "too easy."
I'm not mad, I'm not jelly, I just don't see the point in bringing back content that only served to make a very small % of the community happy. If I want competition I'll play a sport...

| Spawn timer reduction for Gulool Ja Ja, Gurfurlur the Menacing, and Medusa you say? In addition to these three baddies, we are actually looking into reducing the spawn time for all HNMs! The idea is to give you all more opportunities to fight these elusive, notorious enemies. However, please understand that by eliminating the “time cost” associated with them, it will result in other types of costs to arise (for example, having to obtain triggers from battlefields to spawn Fafnir/Behemoth/Adamantoise). |
