I reinstalled FFXIV yesterday and after a few problems updating it (7 hour install>.<) I started to play today.

I have hit a major snag in that I am getting severe motion sickness while playing and am wondering if i'll have to just uninstall and forget about ever playing it again :(

I was wondering if anyone here knows of any remedies for this?

*Edit* I get motion sick with all FPS games and lots of others, never had the problem with FFXI though.

It's a pretty common phenomenon. It's normally prevalent in FPS games specifically and you have to alter the FOV (Field of View).

Half Life 2 is a specific game that has a lot of people suffering from Motion sickness.

I can't remember if you can change the FOV in XIV, but I think you can by zooming in and out until you find a FOV you're comfortable with.

Other thing to do is make sure you have enough lighting in the room, playing when dark can put too much emphasis on the game, and therefore you get motion sickness that you commonly get in cars. You could also take motion sickness pills but that is a little extreme.

There are also Sea sick wristbands you can wear that put pressure on a nerve that sends the messages to your brain.

edit: Ginger pills are incredibly good to take too, they don't have any adverse effects either.

I definitely don't want to take pills for motion sickness just for a game! lol
I may try the wristband though, failing that i'll look up the Ginger pills.

I feel really stupid that games can actually make me physically sick >.>

Thanks for your help Flion.

It happens lol. I get motion sickness in Half Life 2 unless I alter the settings to make it less... close.

It feels like my head is spinning and then I get waves of nausea D:

Lighting the room up adequately did help me a lot though, I didn't need anything else. But ginger pills are pretty good I've heard, and those wristbands (called sea bands maybe?) work well apparently. Good luck XD

Certain FPS with shifting planes of view do this to me as well. The first time I got into a tank in Battlefield 2, and rolled over a mound of dirt, when the horizon shifted, I was immediately nauseous.

What seems to do it for me is when there are two active motion planes (weapon bob + horizon moving differently). I find if I can disable weapon sway/bob it normally makes the game significantly more playable.

I don't know if FFXIV has any settings like this, but it might be worth looking into.

A buddy of mine years ago forced his way through it. Back when Counter-Strike first hit and was spreading like Wildfire, he discovered that the game made him nauseous. He was so determined to not let the game best him, that he literally kept a trash can next to his PC and pushed through until he no longer got nauseous. I'm not suggesting this is the best way to handle the situation, but in the long run he overcame his videogame nausea.

Personally, once that first wave of nausea hits me, I'm done with the game. I don't care to repeat that feeling.

This is pretty much how I usually handle it myself. I have so many games that got played once and then have never seen the light of day again. If my fiance and son are playing FPS games I have to leave the room.

sometimes it helps alternating between the game and something else, try watching porno or eating a sub sandwich.

Fallout 3 was ruined for me because of this. I first played it right after getting a huge TV, and it made me really ill... I have mostly adjusted, but I still associate that game with being sick, so I have never had the slightest inclination to try it again...

I played stuff on my 42" TV and switching back to my 17ish monitor was a huge change, same when I switched the first time. Took a long time to get used to the size of text etc on the TV.

Aww, don't feel bad Shayala. I get sick every time I'm in the same room as someone playing Doom, because I don't have the self-control to NOT look at the screen. You're not stupid!

I have it too, I get it with FFXIV sometimes but not with FFXI. IT helps to go third person and never lock on a target when fighting (for some reason the target seems to go through your character, swinging your camera back and fourth), and zoom out from your character as far as possible. I THINK you use the "O" and "P" keys to zoom in and out in 3rd person. You can adjust the lock-on thing in the settings, and also 3rd person view camera settings. I like the camera to be free (not constantly behind the character at all times) that way when i turn the camera doesn't immediately follow, it gradually follows.

Hope it helps!

And yeah, my boyfriend plays FPS games and I can't watch him either... WAAAYYY to icky lol

It was Doom that started it for me a long time ago. I was watching my brother play and started to feel nauseous, I didn't realise it was the game so just went to bed, next thing I know i'm puking my guts up. lol

I used to play minecraft for 6-7 hours and build like a madman. Ever since the 1.8.1 update and the new FOV settings in the options, I can barely build an hour before feeling really sick or major headache.... I thought it was just me being tired or something but I think when I get home ill be looking into adjusting the fov.

I only get motion sickness when I watch the newer FPSs being played (like Black Ooops or MW2 or that). I haven't played them but I prolly would get Motion sickness while playing too.

I'm fine when it's like FF13, FF14, or RPG games (even like Catherine I'm fine with)

I usually stay away from FPSs, but when I'm bored and someone's playing and I decide to watch, I drink LOTS of Sprite/7UP. Those drinks really help me when I'm nauseous, if not that then water helps. (For me at least)
