The new Final Fantasy direction and announcement is here. The new graphics engine is absolutely stunning. I'm so excited I can hardly contain myself and I havent even finished reading yet.

Eat up little birdies

That's a huge change. And I'm very excited about the change.

They're basically packaging and selling the game as a completely new product. A completely new graphics engine is a gigantic change.

I'm excited for it.

Chronos Raum said: »
The main thing that impressed me was the fact that they're tying the whole changes in with a storyline. That's such a great and awesome idea. Making you see the changes happen rather than just a jarring transference.

I'm not overly fussed about the yearly subscription before the changes are implemented, but if I get bored, I'll just stop playing until 2.0.

Incredibly happy they're re-marketing it completely with a new trailer in E3!

First time I've been legitimately excited by XIV news since the first launch.

This will gain a lot of publicity regardless of whether it works or not, simply because no MMO has ever done this.

Chronos Raum said: »
Same. And I'm highly impressed they're using other MMOs for ideas, rather than dismissing them completely.

I want a fun playable game, not a game that passes off as an unique snowflake.

I want to play, simply for the storyline that burgeons 2.0.

Quoted from the other post, because I can't be bothered to write it out again.

Yeah the changes will be slow but it seems they have been listening to us all along and planning changes in the background. Sneaky SE.

Yeah they said that with the new graphics engine things are going to look much different so they will be giving everyone the opportunity to re-customize their character's appearance, race, sex etc.

This has me pritty excited for the game now once they get it out. One thing that has me a bit confused is the bit about the servers, is it saying we will be able to play with others regardless of home server or somebody mind clarifying? Kinda sleepy and can't figure out what they are getting at XD

I think I speak for everyone when I say FFXIV 2.0 is what I expected FFXIV to be when it was first release. I'm very excited, SE is absolutely giving it 150% this time around. The problem is I can't decide whether I want to keep on playing or wait until 2.0.

I'm having fun playing atm, but with the extreme changes that are coming, I personally feel like I will "miss out" on a lot of things if I start out in 2.0 already maxed (using that loosely). I know I could always just keep playing and then make a new character when 2.0 is released, but Idk...

Very anxious, overwhelmed, excited, and confused all at the same time, lol.

I believe they are implementing a game-wide (not just server) system similar to the Dungeon Finder in WoW. Where the system searches (by level, class, etc..) and automatically pairs and makes parties for instanced dungeon areas.

Edit: Basically you never have to wait around shouting for members to do an instanced raid/dungeon, it will find people from other servers, and because the zones are instanced, it has no effect on anything else.

I'm also fairly certain that they are going to work on fixing the server lag between JP and NA. No more getting hit by an AOE when on your screen you are two miles away.

a post by a buddy of mine in regards to waiting:

"I would not recommend waiting. 2.0 will be similar to Rise of the Zilart expansion pack. 2.0 will raise the level cap and add a whole new story line that I am tentatively naming "Cataclysm" for lack of a better term.

It will also introduce new jobs. They are not going to change the story quest for existing jobs that you are leveling now. If you want to experience new stuff then you can level a new 2.0 job from level 1 and have your original jobs ready for the level cap increase and new content."

I'm just reeling from this whole announcement right now. I've read over it several times and its almost like I'm dreaming. The way they planned for several unrepeatable events is absolutely unprecedented in an MMO. They are literally going to transform the world as we know it with our characters right in the middle of it. Amazing. Absolutely worth paying for in my opinion.

We will become part of the lore. The ones who survived the coming cataclysm and helped to rebuild Eorzea from the ashes. Elders.

Players that start at the 2.0 release should be so jelly.

Looks cool, but too little too late. By the time version 2.0 drops, they'll be tying themselves to a 6~7 year old system (PS3). All their grand designs are going to end up stunted by "PS3 limitations," and within the next year some new hotness will come out that invalidates all of their efforts.

Nice try SE and I hope I'm wrong, but strategy isn't your strong point.

I'm glad some people are actually seeing this as the significant part of the announcement that it is.

Also the mannequin system they mentioned is a superb idea. A way to store your gear sets in your inventory for one touch equipping and they don't take up inventory space

People that start at 2.0 won't be jelly though, because they won't know any different than what the game will be then.

Kinda like people that started FFXI around Abyssea. They hear other people saying "Back in the day, leveling was hard yo, CoP was hard yo, it took days just to camp 1 NM, and having a lot of 75's was badass."... And then they're like "Lol, so?"

But yeah, I get what you're saying... pretty cool when you think about it like that.

I expected to pay to play by the end of this year. How could you not. Well I'm gonna gladly pay for the ride to 2.0. If you don't wanna pay to play then see ya.

I'm not worried about ps3 limitations either. Will play on pc mostly anyway and I'm sure they are aware of any possible issues with the ps3 through 2013. The general accepted release date is late 2012 for ps4 and Sony is in their backyard.. I'm sure it will all work out.

Not sure if it is just me, but it would seem that there will be no PS3 limitations or at least that is what SE wants everyone to believe. They seem to be differentiating between the graphics too seeing as they specifically say that there will be different levels of graphics available...kinda like now.

...and is it just me or do the graphics for 2.0 seem better than they are now?

...and the custom UI capabilities available for the PC makes it even more appealing.

Complete overhaul of the servers too (in-house design...or so it looks)

tldr; 2.0 will be a completely different experience with an almost completely new feel (smoother, more content, more fun).

Here's a good explanation of the ps3 limitation issue:

"Console makers, going forward, know that they have to be more compatible to keep their user base. XBOX Live marketplace and PSN store are not going anywhere.

They won't make an entirely new network on the next consoles. XBOX LIVE 360 subscribers will be chatting with the XBOX 720 subscribers on the same network.

PSN is used on PS3, PSP, and Vita. That same network will be on PS4. One can speculate that architecture on the next console will accommodate PS3 software. Even if it doesn't, the same PSN friend list, Trophy system and network architecture will be reused.

Even as crazy as the architecture for the PS3 is, it is still exponentially more similar to PC than PS2 ever was. Things are much different today.

I think that SE would have no more trouble writing code for a new console than they are having now to rewrite it for this entirely new engine that we are all to be ported into."

I think I need to read that again... I just kinda glanced over it, but that sounds amazing. My account is still active even though I haven't played in a month or so, but I'll certainly be paying to play once they get that going, and I really want to see what the latest patch brought so I think I'll be making my return this weekend.

Damn job hunting and portfolio work is killing any fun time I have, but I think after this announcement I want to be on the train to 2.0 and be one of those players who survives the cataclysm.

Edit:

Lemme just also add that this is beyond anything I had imagined they would be doing with this game. I thought these patches would be the only thing we would see to improve the game just to make it profitable. It's clear with this that SE is not giving up on 14, and as the post I quoted says, those players who start at 2.0... are going to be very jelly.

Man.... I wish this was the release, I have to say I'm stunned. Buuut, sadly again, it already had the concept that it's bad, and a lot of people will turn a blind eye to it and might not even look at the update. I really really wanted a similar experience when I played FFXI for years, which so far I have played 5 MMO's post that and none kept me interested more than 5 months unlike the 7 years FFXI kept me hooked. I hope they succeed, good for them for trying to push this out of the ground. I'm definetly going to give it a chance when all this goes live.

They're going to release trailers of the update and for PS3 release at E3 next June, so it should get a lot of press atleast.

Yoshi-P make it good and we will continue to play. I can see the need for this but given the past release of this game and FFXI I'm skeptical if SE can actually design a good UI given any amount of time.

Pretty sure I'm in for the changes tho.. so long as SE doesn't blow it.
