I'm going off for a career, and i need a laptop. i was hoping to get one to play this. doesn't need to run it at max power, obviously. mainly just using it for crafting and chatting ingame, maybe some fights, so on. Anyway! i'm not sure which will be good enough

would this work? I can add the extra memory to it, and maybe that video card, if its needed. but, yea, advice would be nice.

just to give you a fair warning. i play XIV on laptop, and i run it great on medium settings and all that. but obviously laptop's are notorious for heating issues. XIV will make any laptop VERY VERY hot, and can potential damage the machine with prolonged use.

so not trying to discourage you, but take precautions if you can. I have a little setup on my desk with a small fan in the back and a larger one on the side, and two books holding it up so air gets through. with this my card will go from 70(Celsius) or lower (usually only in Ul'dah, which is strangely easy on my GPU) up to 80 in large fields, especially outside Gridania. without fans it will exceed 90 degrees after time and I'm sure would go towards 100, though I've never let it.

I have a very large laptop so it handles heat better than the average one, though i have parts that may generate more heat like an I7 processor (you don't need something that powerful).

sorry longish post XD but make sure you are aware of this, when you start playing get some kinda gadget that shows temp for GPU and maybe even CPU. speccy is good for that, though its a program not a desktop gadget, which are more convenient

I'm in kinda the same situation here, I need to get a laptop for college and I'd like to get one that can play FFXIV fairly well. I looked over the site with the graphics card and found this laptop that looks pretty good to me...

here

The graphics card it has is this one -

here

Seems pretty good to me, as $750 is about the max I'm willing to pay atm for a laptop.

However I'm still quite a noob at stuff like this so I thought I'd go ahead and ask anyway, if anyone has something similar to this laptop or something. xD Or even any ideas of something similar that could be a bit cheaper. I'm not looking to play on ultra high settings or anything, I'd like at least medium graphics though and have it still run with little to no lag. Any thoughts?

Edit - This is what the graphics look like running on my PC right now for a reference, I don't want it to look any worse than this if possible.

The biggest issue most people have to realize when playing on a laptop is resolution. Most midrange laptops will play the game at 720p at medium settings no issues. And with the 30fps frame setting cap now it helps out tremendously.

If you want to play on higher resolutions you need a more powerful GPU.

Right now the best bang for the buck on a really good gaming laptop is this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?SID=u1452868t0f0fp60056dd0c0s701&AID=10440897&PID=1225267&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-cables-_-na-_-na&Item=N82E16834230027 $800 After Rebate.

Wow, very nice. o.o I'll probably end up getting that one then. Never would have looked at it before with the $899 price tag but it's an awesome deal with that rebate. Thanks.

I have this laptop and it works great!!! game looks great on the laptop screen, However I use the HDMI to play on the TV. The Rear facing fans keep the laptop fairly cool.

I will say this is barely a laptop it is very large & heavy. But it will play XIV with no problem. Enjoy

Haha yeah that's what I was worried about, the heaviness. Like I said I'm getting this first for the purpose of school so I'll have to haul it back and forth. -.-; But I can do it, I -have- to have this laptop lol. Thanks for the feedback. Can't wait to finally order it tomorrow, just been waiting impatiently for financial aid check to clear. :P

Wow that's unfortunate. I would call Asus and see what they say. Did your laptop look new or a returned item?

I have a 30 day replacement thing with Newegg that they're going to do. It looked brand new. The thing that is upsetting is after reading more of the review a majority of people had the same issue where it wouldn't power on... Sometimes not once but two or three times their laptop came back to them not working.

So I'm a bit frustrated as they don't do refunds on laptops, only replacements. Also if you do a replacement you forfeit the $100 rebate. And vice versa, if you send in a rebate you forfeit your chance for a replacement.

So I got screwed pretty hard here, I'm out of the $100 rebate for sure and 900 dollars was out of my price range. I desperately just want the laptop I was originally intending to get, the HP for $750 but it seems I'm stuck with this one... I'll have to send it back to them on Monday and have them send me a new one which likely won't work, if it does work, it probably won't work for long. Also it'll probably take at least 2 weeks for me to get another one.

Looking like I won't have a laptop for this school year at this point, if I keep getting defective ones which seems likely.

I'm thinking of calling them Monday and ask if they will let me do a store credit type of thing, and perhaps exchange out the laptop for one of equal or lesser value or something. Chances are they won't, they seem pretty firm on replacement only atm. So I'm nervous about being stuck with this laptop that seems to have a lot of problems.

That seems odd that you would forfeit the rebate on a replacement. The rebate comes directly from Asus so I would give them a call and verify you will still be eligible for the rebate. I know alot of people in the laptop community love their Asus so im just hoping it was a bad batch issue. Also specs wise the Asus is better than the HP for gaming which is why I posted it.

I myself have a Alienware M17xR3 but that is completely out of your price range.

Good luck

I agree that it's odd about the rebate. We did talk to Newegg on that, and they were the ones who first told us we couldn't get the rebate because of some issue with sending our box in, and they need some number from the original box which would also be the number you were to send in for your rebate.

So we did call Asus and the odd thing about that is they said something about they're not the place to call about the rebate, we were supposed to call the website that the rebate links to (which I had thought was Asus.com anyway?) and they would be the ones to talk to. Um I don't remember the whole thing, my boyfriend talked to them but it was an odd sounding thing where neither Newegg or Asus really wanted to deal with the rebate?

Anyway the rebate offer expires 10/31 which sucks because I'll be lucky to even have the laptop by then. I think there's probably some way we could work the rebate issue out though.

Even if we can, I'll probably end up not sending it in just so I can replace the laptop if something goes wrong.

Like you said, I'm hoping I just got unlucky here with a bad batch. I do believe it's a good laptop. I talked to the other guy who posted on here who has one and he said he's had his around a year and never had an issue, so I'm really hopeful it'll work out. I'll be happy if I get one that works, even if it was a bit more than I wanted to spend.

I was reading over the feedback about the laptop on Newegg and saw this comment:

Quote:
The power button issue that everyone complains about is real. The fix is simple, all you have to do is open the keyboard and secure the connection between the power button and motherboard. Takes some engineering, but not all too difficult.

This might be a totally different issue from yours. It seems like the power button in general is problematic. I'm not sure how comfortable you are with tinkering with the laptop, and you may have already sent it back, but just thought I would throw that out there. :)

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but I'm not sure if my PM's went through:

@Piznatch: Do you think the G53sw could run XIV at a consistent 30fps at 1920x1020 on standard settings with the newly added fps cap option set to 30?

@Soki: What settings and resolution do you run 1 XIV instance on that laptop, and what is your average fps?

I already sent it back in actually and I'm not really comfortable messing around with it... However when I get another one, most likely end of next week, if it doesn't work I'll try it out. I'd be a little scared to wreck the laptop and void a warranty if that would count as voiding it? I'm not sure, opening a keyboard doesn't sound that hard though? xD

Thanks for that info though, actually was trying to google ways to fix the power button but couldn't find anything. So that helps.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005AKPSKC

obviously this is a beefed up version of that asus on newegg. i picked this up about a month ago for gaming and design for 1700 somehow (i thought it was a steal) and i was hoping it would be beast enough for xiv because i REALLY want to get into it...but...not quite yet.

amazon has it a little over 2k right now so i'm not so sure but if you plan on doing other processor intense things maybe it'd be worth a look-i love it. trackpad sucks though and i still prefer osx *gasp! (upgraded from '07 macbook pro)

If you really just wana craft and chat, some fighting. I've played my entire FFXIV career on a:

Gateway NV53A You can pick one up anywhere around $500.

I turn background graphics down to 4 and leave everything else standard.

4GB DDR3 Memory
AMD Turion II x2
ATI Mobility Radeon HD4250

It's a little slow to load in and out of cutscenes. But I'm able to dual box when necessary and run speak programs, (Teamspeak, Vent, Mumble) as well as a parser and browse internet, watch vids, or whatever at the same time will very very little lag.

Wouldn't recomend this as a permaneant setup, but this will get me thru til the PS3 release.

Alright, bought mysepf an XPS 15 inch laptop from dell, using the standard options (but with the free 6 gig memory upgrade) the system runs ff14 at its factory settings pretty damn well. i'm quite surprised. i even got the laptop at 100bucks off, but looking up a coupon. quite happy with how it turned out.

Okay, I have one more maybe silly question. Sorry I don't know a lot about computers so I thought someone else might know. >.>;

Under FFXIV recommended on the can you run it site, it says the recommended Processor is Intel Core i7 (2.66 GHz) or faster. I ended up getting a diff laptop since the Asus was out of stock when I RMA'd it.

The laptop I got has Intel Core i7 2.0GHz (with Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz). I was wondering if the 2.0GHz vs the 2.66GHz is gonna be a lot worse. Mainly, I'm wondering what is the Turbo Boost thing? Would that help? Or would the Turbo Boost make the laptop die faster?

I don't know, sorry for the dumb questions. xD
