I'm back to looking at college again, and I was looking to CLEP some credits.
Has anyone here taken the CLEP tests (successful or not)? There are a couple I'm pretty sure I could pass now, some that I would need a refresher on, and some that there's little chance of me passing even after studying on my own. I'm just trying to get a better feel for the difficulty of them.
Edit: If anyone is wondering, I'm looking at an Associates in General Education with Computer Science and History minors.
Edit: These are the test I'm looking to take.
CLEP Exam Title
English Composition with Essay
American Literature
College Algebra
Natural Sciences - General
History of the United States I
History of the United States II
Western Civilization I
Western Civilization II

I'm not going back yet... I'm just replotting what classes I would take. I've got to re-steady my finances first, but I think I'm to the point in my career that I can't put it off for much longer.
If I can knock out 38 (no way I'll get all of them, but that's how many credits for my associate I could knock out with 10 CLEP tests) of the 60 needed for my associates... well that would be pretty damn awesome.

That shouldn't be too hard. I'd rather test out too if I were in your position. Testing out with AP and college release did wonders for my GPA. Too bad I went a little nutty my freshman year. :/ Shame on me.
If you can knock out thirty-eight credits, I'd say go for it!

Borrow some text books and skim through chapters (especially math) to give yourself a refresher. After remembering some key fragments of procedures and topics, the rest usually comes back to you.
I clept nearly an entire year of studies and highly recommend it. That test, the 30min-2hr it takes is well worth knocking out some classes (especially at the cost of time and school hours these days).
Too bad I went a little nutty my freshman year. :/ Shame on me. Not gonna lie, that peaked my interest.

Which subjects did you take? Math is my least concern, tbh. I've been watching Sav do her online math class, and it covers a majority of what the CLEP would for College Algebra. I'm more concerned with things like literature and history.
Edit: And for the English composition I have to do the essay portion to get credit with Troy :(

'Troy'? As in the 'Illiad'? That should be a snap. Essays are a piece of cake!
What courses are you specifically trying to test out of within the History and English sphere other than English Comp? US History I and II? World Civ? Brit Lit?
EDIT: Can you test out of your Art History credit through CLEP? I would suggest doing that if so. Do you have to have an Art course with an Associates? Anyway, that's an easy course too.

Do you know which books are in the syllabus for your American Lit? Western Civ I should cover Mesopotamian Civilization up to Renaissance, and Western Civ II should be from Renaissance on, if I remember correctly. Does Natural Science cover Bio, Physics, and Chem?

For American Lit I'm trying to find out which books are covered. Once I know that, I'll probably feel better about it.
From a website:
Western Civ I
Quote: The content of the exam is broken down as follows: ancient Near East (8-10% of the exam); ancient Greece and Hellenistic civilization (15-17%); ancient Rome (15-17%); medieval history (23-27%); Renaissance and Reformation (13-17%); and early modern Europe, 1560 to 1648 (10-15%).
Western Civ II
Quote: The content of the exam is broken down as follows: absolutism and constitutionalism, 1648 to 1715 (7-9% of the exam); competition for empire and economic expansion (4-6%); scientific view of the world (5-7%); Enlightenment period (7-9%); revolution and Napoleonic Europe (10-13%); the Industrial Revolution (7-9%); political and cultural developments, 1815-1848 (6-8%); politics and diplomacy in the Age of Nationalism, 1850 to 1914 (7-9%); economy, culture, and imperialism, 1850 to 1914 (7-9%); Europe between the wars (7-9%); and the Second World War and contemporary Europe (8-10%).
Natural Science
Quote: The content of the exam is broken down as follows: the origin and evolution of life and the classification of organisms (10% of the exam); cell organization, cell division, the chemical nature of the gene, bioenergetics, and biosynthesis (10%); the structure, function, and development of organisms (20%); concepts of population biology with emphasis on ecology (10%); atomic and nuclear structure, elementary particles, and nuclear reactions (7%); chemical elements, compounds and reactions, molecular structure, and molecular bonding (10%); heat, thermodynamics, states of matter, classical mechanics, and relativity (12%); electricity and magnetism, waves, and light and sound (4%); galaxies, stars, and the solar system (7%); and the Earth's atmosphere, hydrosphere, structure, properties, surface features, geological processes, and history (10%).
I have no idea how accurate these are.
Edit: I looked at the wrong one for science at first. I'm not too concerned with Natural Science.

I had some major issues with CLEP and then transferring back into regular college when i returned from active duty... make sure that they transfer to what ever college you might be wanting to go into prior to pouring in that kinda time..
Much Luck!

I would be taking the tests directly at Troy. These are straight from their list of CLEPs they accept.

If you're gonna buy textbooks (or any other books) to brush up on stuff, check with me first. I know how to find cheap, or free, easily.

Oh God! You're going to make me crawl into my attic!
Well, if it's any consolation, Uri is a History major, and I was one until my dad convinced me that all I could do with that is teach. I do love my history!!!
Will both Western Civs include an essay to test out of? I still have a ***ton of Arch History BS too.
EDIT: I still have a batch of textbooks that I couldn't sell back sitting in a closet somewhere.
DOUBLE EDIT: I really need to learn to just get rid of junk.

English Composition is the only thing that requires an essay. Everything else is multiple choice.

You might want to consider doing a rental for the textbooks from Barnes & Nobles if Xueye can't find what you need...they aren't very expensive either Krizz.I commend you for going back to school! I myself went back to school 4 years ago and am on the fast track to finishing up my Masters in International Relations.

In my experience, buying used and selling back saves you much more money than rentals. In general, renting is costly as is and oftentimes buying used is better.

I assume it could be anything on this list.

I took Brit Lit, so I have no idea.
EDIT: I wouldn't be surprised if 'The Great Gatsby' (LOL), 'The Grapes of Wrath', 'Fahrenheit 451' and/or 'Of Mice and Men' would be tested.

Yeah...It seems to be the line-up from high school Lit.
Krizz, you should be in the clear if you remember most of your reading list from high school.

If Lit is anything like AP test it will be about analyzing a story they give you to read during testing time usually a short story or an excerpt from a book not a book you would have been previously expected to read. Mainly because they're standardized test and every school has different required readings, it's mostly meant to teach you to notice different writing styles and to teach you to read beyond the basic text.

Quote: To succeed on the American Literature exam, students will need to master the following topics and skills: the characters, plots, settings, and themes of particular literary works (46-60% of the exam); interpreting short poems or excerpts from long poems and prose works (25-40%); the historical and social settings of specific works and authors and the relationships between literary works and traditions (10-15%); and understanding the critical theories of American writers, literary terms, and verse forms (5%). By era, the content of the exam is broken down as follows: the colonial period, 1620-1830 (10-15% of the exam); the Romantic period, 1830-1870 (25%); the period of realism and naturalism, 1870-1910 (25%); the modernist period, 1910-1945 (25%) ; and the contemporary period, 1945 to the present (10-15%).
Sounds to me like they have actual books and authors in mind.
Edit: Look at the sample questions on this page.
