More of my silly ideas maybe, but I think this could be quite interesting. It assumes that ps2 support will be dropped, but
seeing as the old non-slim-line models are getting harder and harder to come by, that might not be far off.
What about a new set of maws appearing that lead, not to the past, or some lame-o "alternate dimension with red skies", but to the future?
It would be really interesting to see what the supposed influence of all us "adventurers" would do to the game world in like...oh maybe a century? Would the beast-men be extinct? Would new and annoying technology-based enemies be plaguing the populace? Could rangers get laser-guns? (oh please, oh please!).
Almost all of the single player FF's seem to have a much higher tech lvl than FFXI, so I don't think it's a terrible idea, or out of continuity. With ps2 support dropped, glowing energy weapon effects, proper metallic reflections, heck even personal airships for linkshells would all be possible.
Anyways, just wondered what people think of the idea, feel free to add wishlists from the future, criticisms, cries of "you're completely mad", etc. etc. Maybe I'll pitch the idea to the official forums if folks like it enough.

It's an interesting idea, but I'd prefer they expand on the world they've already given us. I want mithra homeland/far east, etc. :x

With their last update I'm fairly sure "Expand" is not a plan lol.

screw more maws, how about we stop putting expansions in with areas in the past, in other dimensions and please god not the future...how about we open more stuff in the actual present.
How about opening Grauberg, vunkerl inlet, fort karugo-narugo. Idk if i missed the memo of why those areas are still locked but it still boggles my mind that grauberg and vunkerl inlet have now been used in 2 expansion/add-ons but are locked in the present/our dimension. I don't know to what extent of content they could add within them, it doesnt have to come along with a huge add-on just add some mobs and NMs and go with it.
I also agree with Niniann, if aht urhgan is the near east...where is the far east? and if they werent gonna do a "far east" why not just call it "The East" instead of "near"
I think its about time for another city of some sort. Something fresh and new not just what we have constantly reskined. We've had the past, the present and an alternate dimension, i think its time to leave what we have alone.
How about something like....Where do all these moogles keep coming from!? always thought the idea of like a moogle city would be cool, or keeping to tradition of FF games where are all the wild chocobos?! Chocobo forest! mithra homelands etc etc etc.

You know what I think would be cool?
Taking back the ruins of Tavnazia City from whatever horrible beastmen hordes lurk down there.

I'm actually pretty sure Grauberg/Vunkerl/Karugo-narugo are parts of Kons/La Theine/Tahrongi, but were destroyed or something during the war. They're on the same spots on the map iirc. So I dunno.

There's actually a Chocobo homeland, it's in the chocobo racing missions. There's a queen of the chocobos and stuff. Not sure where that's actually located.

i either wanna go super far into the past where the galkas have a city, or go to the north where the gigas and orcs are from.

They're not. If you go to the Skyrend up in Grauberg, you can actually see the Crag of Dem far off in the distance. This puts it roughly east and above where the Gusgen Mines spread out (since most of the sprawl just goes north.) My guess is that the various entrances were collapsed/destroyed during the war.

Dear lord no, that's part of what's making everything 7+ (expect 9) pieces of crap. It's Final FANTASY not Final Tech Warfare. Stick to the basics of magic and swords (I even have issue with guns).

Far east is loosely explored in CoP, that's where Tenzen came from.
It would be cool if we finally went there, maybe we could revive Pheonix finally?

Neat, I didn't know that. The entrances were probably collapsed though/the areas were destroyed, would make sense.

Vana'diel is the world of Final Fantasy XI, and it is unique in that a great portion of it is entirely inaccessible to its playerbase and is only mentioned in passing during the script dialogue of particular quests and missions or on in-game item descriptions. Upon its 2002 beta and release, Vana'diel consisted entirely of two major continents, dubbed the Middle Lands: Quon to the west and Mindartia to the east. Quon houses the Kingdom of San d'Oria and Republic of Bastok, while Mindartia holds in its southernmost region the Federation of Windurst. Spanning the Bastore Sea at the world's center is the politically neutral Grand Duchy of Jeuno, which served as the central hub of the game for a number of years. Across the eastern sea of Mindartia is Aradjiah, a new continent released in the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion in 2006. Only the western portion of Aradjiah (also called the "Near East") is currently accessible to players, and lays home to the Empire of Aht Urhgan.
Prior to this though, in the Chains of Promathia storyline, the character Tenzen is said to hail from the Far East, the eastern portion of Aradjiah where apparently Phoenix once resided. The jobs of Monk, Samurai, and Ninja originally hail from this region. Additionally, both the Shikaree Sisters and Naja Salaheem hail from the Mithran homeland, the continent of Olzhirya somewhere south of Mindartia and Quon. Most of Olzhirya is occupied by the Gha Naboh Matriarchate where even male Mithra exist. The islands of Tsahya and likely Zhwa are also assumed part of Olzhirya, as they appear on item descriptions as islands "far to the south". Rhazowa is the frosted home to the Orcish Empire and the origin of the Gigas - a continent north of even the coldest regions of the Middle Lands. Far to the west of Quon resides Ulbuka, likely origin to the Elvaan race in their home city Aldiaine. Ulbuka is also the origin of most totem-pole furnishings and the Bison Jacket armor set that resembles real-world Native American leather garbs.
It is understanding this unviewable, grand structure that one will come to realize that Vana'diel, in some loose respect, alludes to the basic cultural geography and historical development of the real world. Regrettably, this late in the game's lifespan, it is extremely unlikely that the Far East of Aradjiah, Olzhirya, Rhazowa, or Ulbuka will ever become explorable to players.

Still, it's nice to look at to know where everything "could" be at in the vanadiel world. Too bad they didn't keep on venturing out and let us explore those worlds.

everyone knows to find the chocoland you have to find a shadow randomly placed somewhere in the world, and feed your white choco a really hot pepper to cause him to fly into the sky. that's why it's not on a map. it's not even that unbelievable. we already use a magic teleporter to fly to a floating island. why the hell can't we have space rocket choco?

Judging by what FFXI given us in the past 3 years, it will involve a place in another dimension (likely with Void in its name), a recycled zone populated by Moogles, or both.
Look at the stupid ever-rising scale of threats Vana'diel has already faced. It went from preventing the possibility of another horrible war consuming the land (fairly believable, even for fantasy) to slaying gods to extra-dimensional-time-paradoxing-reality-shattering-bullcrap.
I mean, how do you top that? What threat can feel fresh even after what's happened so far? At this point, we've gone full retard. There's no going back to reasonable stories anymore. We've reached... the Final Fantasy.
Or they can just go with Magian Voidmoogles that break the fourth wall.

If we can travel through maws that take us to other dimensions and throws us into the past, fly airships to giant light pillars and land us in al'taieu then why cant we dig a hole into the ground and open up these locked zones lol.

Thats why we need a new continent or city to go to. Doesnt have to be saving the world class adventure but could be saving a society from something lol I mean we're all battle hardened adventures that have saved the world countless times...we could used a vacation something simple and easy ;)

They could easily come up with a new expansion. The emptiness in the far east could be a major threat. I don't remember much or if they delved far into that story of Tenzens homeland but it seemed like a really big deal, especially if they had to sacrifice all those people for Phoenix. They could make Promathia attempt to be reborn via the emptiness in the far east :o and have some sorta epic battle over there with phoenix turning evil or something and having to fight her as a boss. Then you could have to settle the war effort there with them and Aht Urghan.

Yup, no doubt, they can EASILY develop a new expansion introducing any of these far-away lands. It would be interesting to see a Mithra-land with males, that might make for great manthra jokes for sure.

Many of us want new explansions, but who knows if SE is gonna bother </3
I'd be happy if they opened Graberg & Vunkerl INlet in present, like go up to Jochem & get A CS like:
Joachim: Good t' see ya <player name> always appreciatn' yer help with out world, but with all ye done fer us ain't it about time we help you?
Go on <-
...I don't care
Joachim: I bet ye wanna see Graberg & Vunkerl Inlet of yer time eh?
Go on
...I don't care <-
Joachim: Well suit ye'r self then eh?
Joachim: Though from what I been told those places are closed off from ye here, bugs ya don't it? anyway before I ramble on, how would ye like it if you could go there? if you can bring back some proof o'corse. (would have to go to the past & find a K.I. or some rare/ex item be it off a force spawn NM or some fetch quest)
---
Thats all I got lol, for getting to the mithra homeland
Spoilers just in case Maybe Naja wants to be nice, by lifting our hefty debt SLIGHTLY if we agree to carry out a few missions in her homeland, naturally you'd have to speak with her Sister Haja. Anyway she decides she would first like to donate half (though she's greedy & would only donate like 1/3 lolz) of the payment she got from the empress which means you can go, she gives you a pass (that becomes permanent...only because that too has a tracking device) via an Air ship in Kazam, how would you get there? well that mithra in the AH area blocking off a path? that's how you'd get to it. maybe? for Far east I would assume ToAU & CoP must be beaten, but how would Tenzen react if he finds out you are buddy buddy with a beastman? (Gessho)
The ship to the north? you'd be attacked by Orcish pirates (Gigas would probably be too big to go on a ship) & if you made it to the Icy hell I think there would be lots of giant Buffalo & those... (new mob?) whatsit's that drop Shagreen (Gigas in the past in Xarc drop those) Ruzor's, Demons (red skinned), Corpselights, Gnoles & so on.
Sorry for the WoT ^^;
