Today i've decided to patch my ffxiv, and give it another shot. My question is, is the crafting system still as in depth as it was around december?
I only played for a week in december with a few friends, but we quit because we were having so many problems crafting new gear. If you wanted a sword a few levels above the starting one, you had to go through a magical journy to get all the parts, and it was just a pain in the butt.
So is it all still the same?

And totally unrelated to my question, any ideas why I couldn't keep a stable connection to the update servers? I kept shooting from 300kbs to 0, this is a problem i've had every time i've tried to update, including at launch, before I found out my pc sucked too bad to run it.

Pretty much the same, but not near as bad. They will supposedly be fixing this in the next patch.
As for your connection, it's just that their patcher is terrible. Try opening the files up in a torrent or find a direct download.

Yes crafting is still a ***, lots of mats and parts to find and craft to come up with a final product; however, the devs have specifically said that they are going to simplify crafting so it isn't such an ungodly timesink to create a stack of shepherd's pie or whatever else it is you want to make. Wait until the 1.19 patch comes out then re-ask this question. As for your patch download issues, SE's patch servers suck. SUCK. Use another source to get your patches.

It's been revamped, but at the same time, the part that you named as irritating is still there.. Although it won't be for long. They're going to make it so you just mix base materials for a finished product, no shirt parts or blades or anything like that.
It's easier with the ward search though.. You can quickly find all the materials you need (assuming they're for sale in the wards) rather than just wandering around searching each and every retainer hoping to hit the jackpot.
There's also a shitload of people with mid-high level crafts, if you can't make the part you need, it's not too hard to find someone willing to do it with just shouting.

Anything you wear during gathering degrades your armor.

Easy to find cheap gathering armour, no reason to be wearing glad armour while farming.

Stats on gathering gear actually help greatly with your gathering activities so I would recommend wearing that instead of other armor.

Ok, well, I guess I have more questions.
Is there some place where its easier to find people to buy things from? Im in Limsa Lominsa atm, and theres like nothing in the wards as far as weapons go.
And all my gear is falling apart xD. I had planned on making a new character, just so I can relearn some of the super basic things, but theres just nothing here :O

And on top of that, for example, the bronze chainmail in here costs over 70k, that just seems like so much to me!

until they make grid and LL more popular, you do all your pt invites and sales in uldah. sucks for te people tha like being in ll or grid. you set hp in uld, tele to the other towns to do your leves, then return back to uld.
I didnt get to uldah until i had every job 20, i did all my gathering and lvling in the black shroud. with r1 starting weapons and some cloth gear.

Yeah, Ul'dah is the central hub for everything. Population is not healthy enough to establish 3 different market wards. It actually needed to be condensed into one city.
Used to be that leves were only done in Ul'dah as well, but that changed when SE gave Limsa and Gridania SP bonuses to leves in those cities. Now people almost exclusively do leve runs in those cities, but all their buying, selling, and grind party forming in Ul'dah.

its the same for the sserver im on. everybody is in uldah i am starting to see a little bit of population in other cities though
