I care.
You're just a bag of guts, who cares about you?(not implying that people don't, but that's exactly the point, people do.)

Everything is "just a" something.

I know.
:P
It's just a thing that I do when I see that "it's just a X, who cares", obviously I care so that's one person, so I was refuting.
:D

it's only just a joke when you make it blatantly apparent that it is...just a joke.
:P
Beef will always have beef with something, it's beef.

You're all atheists already. Every one of you. Even the most stridently religious of you is an atheist towards Ra, the Sun God. You're atheist about Quetzalcoatl, Athena, Saturn, Zeus, Odin, or any other of the thousands and millions of gods and goddesses who have come and gone throughout human history. And you don't give them a single waking moment of thought or careful contemplation to their non-existence. You do not engage in "the religion of not believing in Imahmana Viracocha." There are no weekly meetings. There's no political movement. You just don't give it any consideration whatsoever. Atheists are precisely the same way -- they just add one more god to the list. Not even Christopher Hitchens (the most publicly virulent anti-religious person I can recall offhand) wants to outlaw religion, nor would consider a religious person an impossibly flawed, evil being who does not deserve to hold elected office or be invited into one's house. He just wants religion to leave him alone. Yet the stigma against atheists in our society is so strong, publicly proclaiming yourself to be one is akin to proclaiming yourself an agent of Lucifer. It is impossible to achieve any elected office in this country after such a pronouncement. Many studies have shown that the hatred towards atheists in this country is more widespread and vitriolic than even the hatred towards militant Islam. So please, don't equate the two.

Here's my POV on the difference. We have a couple people who have to make an inflammatory thread about it every other day. I have a roomate and several friends who take EVERY opportunity (including times when there wasn't even a window) to denounce religion, AND slander people "stupid enough" to have faith. If i made a different thread every day "haha dis study of 20 people sez dat atheist are more stupider" people would tell me to go away and quit wasting forum space. If I said to a group of muslim's "MIT did a study and said that 70% of all radical terrorist groups are muslim" there would be an uproar.

I don't deal with it every day, and I'm sure the "Zealous" atheists (aetheists) will pretend it's far worse than it really is, but I don't know too many soap-box Christians anymore. My mother is literally the ONLY person I know who will continue to preach to someone who expresses dis-interest (and I'm a catholic youth minister who deals with a larger portion of the churches of the arch-dioscese of Detroit than most christians see monthly).

The bright side for you is that the religious are one of the few special-interest groups that, not only is it PC to pick on, it's totally in this week! Some toolbox who never grew out of his "rebel against the establishment" phase has to read up on all the propaganda and start attacking as many theists as they can find on a daily basis. Witnesses/Mormon's knock on my door and ask to talk to me about their deal? I say I'm not interested and they go away. Hari-Khrishna accosts me at the airport? I say "I have a faith that I am strong in" and they dance away. Some "It's popular to be violently anti-religion now atheist" spouts his retoric and I happen to see it? "Seriously, this is getting tedious and it's clearly just a thread placed here to take a shot at the religious and start a fire." Guess what? 30 more threads over the next month.

I'm sorry, what was your point here? Atheists are evangelizing and you're tired of it?

You also state you don't see christian proselytizing that much anymore?

What planet do you live on?

The reason why you see so many threads about atheists being tired of theism is because it's saturating -everything- and we're voicing our concerns.

Massive Islamaphobia, Texas School board of education, kids bullied for not wanting to pray at schools, religious tests for public offices, MASSIVE funding against same sex marriage, pro-life propaganda, constant bloodshed in the middle east, creationism...

It's overwhelming when the majority of the planet (yes, you're in the majority as a theist) is supporting the above hypocrisy and violence. And please, don't be so predictable as to play the "but that's generalizing" card.

My "point" is that J-rock posted (to summarize very half-assedly) that atheists are persecuted and compared them to being another religion and shown the same respect. I was making the "point" that they show no-one else respect anymore and cry all day about the "saturation" when the only preaching i hear from ANY "religion" anymore is them. I believe that something is to be said when a countries interests during its birth were "religious tolerance" and now the only bashing tolerated is against religion.

You also (and ignorantly, no offense) imply that:

in short: you are a massive massive hypocrite.

semantics-guy answer:
atheism isn't a religion.
perspective-guy: you must be hanging out with a bunch of atheists
perspective-guy 2:why are you not in church?

pespective-guy3:if you see so much atheist hate, you might not be hanging out with the right crowd of people that you would want to hang with.

both you and the other dude are exaggerating.

So basically because Ashman doesn't see much theocracy and proselytizing from theists, the sum of it belongs to the atheists whom he is forced to read about in the politics and religion threads.

Gotcha.

There is nothing generalizing about me bringing up the negative aspects of religion that we atheists are complaining about.

It's already been said that we're not associating that behavior to every religious person, but rather that religion is used as a catalyst for that behavior.

Try and keep up.

edit: Ashman - Compare the public funding for prolife campaigns and homophobic antigay marriage campaigns to the funding and public broadcasts for atheism. They're ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE greater. Stop playing the pathetic victimized theist card, you're embarrassing yourself.

You're right, its not generalizing. There are abviously no homosexual religious people.

Oh, and from what you are saying, all religious people are pro life and all athiest are pro choice.

Keep these generalizations up and your entire argument is worth nothing.

I know Nevill is intelligent enough to know that's not what I said, he's just ran out of reasonable arguments and is back pedaling at this point.

Hell, even in the quote he used from me, I specifically state:

Neosutra said:

It's already beeen said that we're not associating that behavior to every religious person, but rather that religon is used as a catalyst for that behavior"

So he's either ignoring the point because he has nothing more to contribute, or he's illiterate.

I believe that something is to be said when a countries interests during its birth were "religious tolerance" and now the only bashing tolerated is against religion.
semantics-guy answer: atheism isn't a religion. perspective-guy: you must be hanging out with a bunch of atheists perspective-guy 2:why are you not in church? pespective-guy3:if you see so much atheist hate, you might not be hanging out with the right crowd of people that you would want to hang with. both you and the other dude are exaggerating

I was exaggerating to make my point clear (aparently not clear enough) to some people that their posts were gettin a bit abrasive. He was exaggerating entirely because he doesnt agree with my request for some reason and feels the need to try to disprove what is literally an opinion based anecdote (ie - impossible).

edit: I do hang with the wrong crowd and I am aware that both sides are guilty of flooding people with their opinions. I just want to make it clear that all my life i have heard "MAN I HATE THESE RELIGIOUS PEOPLE PREACHING AT ME ALL THE TIME" and that a good portion (generalization, admittedly) of these atheists have become that which they hated to start with.

No, i throw in ad homiem attacks when people resort to back tracking to previously debunked arguments and circular logic to facilitate their back pedaling. In essence, it's just to demonstrate my annoyance for your adolescent debating tactics and wasting my time.

Basically: Respect us enough to not bring up the same *** arguments we've already discussed and debunked, and we'll respect you enough to not call your posts dribble.
