All of history and a few tours in Afghan/Iraq has deprived me of my "faith" in humanity.

I'm sorry to hear that and believe me I am almost there with you. The hope that I have remaining is thin, fragile and waning.

like ffxi, when you ask for help from your LS or friend, you're putting faith in that they will do what they say. otherwise, why ask them? if they have nothing to gain from helping you, why should they? because you have faith that they are your friend, and they are trustworthy.
That's the sunrise analogy.
"You have faith the sun will rise every morning."
Well, the thing is, that's not "faith". When discussing religion, faith is usually defined in the manner that "you believe this even if evidence does not exist, or contradicts this belief."
A "rational belief" is the belief that the sun will rise in the morning because for the past couple of billion days it did just that.
In this case, he may ask his friends for help because they are fellow players that enjoy his presence and have helped him before. Not "faith" in the sense that religion states: where it would be like him thinking people that had never helped him before would help him.
a rational belief is i'm not a 182 IQ scientist who can understand that stuff that they "theorize". the Big Bang Theory is supposed to be a fact and people believe in this but tell me how does it work? a big explosion and boom life? that's just about as far fetched as a guy walked on water, rose from the dead and flew into heaven don't you think? and it's also called a THEORY, isn't that just a word for "well this is my idea of how it happened"?
but because it's "new" and they use fancy words to explain it it's more believable? that's why i say, atheists/theists you're one in the same, believing something that can't possibly be proven. maybe you don't believe in the big bang, good for you, but if you're going to attack religion you might as well attack big bang theorists too correct?
i just think people are attacking religion alone because it's an easy target. not to mention, how ironic it is for atheists to say theists think they're better because they're condemning you to hell, but you turn around and do the same thing by calling them unintelligent.
by the way, it's not the sunrise analogy because people aren't as predictable as the rising of the sun. 1 day they can be nice, and the next day they can totally flake out.

Go look up what you're talking about and get back to us here, ok? Hell, 'Theory' is addressed on the previous page I think.

Did Beef just use the "Argument from Ignorance", the "It's called a THEORY", AND the "Victimized religion" arguments all in one post?!
That's got to be a record.

So, totally off topic, but I caught a glimpse of 'Cash Cab' and one of the questions was, "Which Biblical figure do most Americans mistakenly think Joan of Arc was married to?"
Sorry. It just made me laugh so hard.

I had to share. That was too funny to pass up. The lack of history and even common Biblical knowledge in this country surprises and scares me. I'm glad that even though we all may not see eye-to-eye in these threads, there are always some laughs to be shared.

Robust knowledge of the bible typically leads to atheism.

Robust knowledge of the bible typically leads to atheism. Agreed, I don't know anyone who can honestly say they have read the koran or the bible cover to cover and isn't atheist as a result, or was atheist before. I know it's how i came upon it. I knew instantly afterwards that this was not a god that i would worship even IF he was real.

i just want to know why having faith makes them less smart? you act like there's no scientists or geniuses who believe in God. you pretend like you're smart because you don't believe in anything.
you can't even see your own ignorance, all you do is beat around the argument instead of answering the questions. i'm trying to see your point of view, and you won't even allow me this. could this because you have no point?
it's like a *** circle jerk of atheists to stroke each others *** or something. if someone doesn't believe EXACTLY what you believe you think they're idiots and you're superior without providing any insight whatsoever.
thanks for proving the point, you're the same as the crazy religious people.

i don't have time to read 13 pgs of ***where people are talking about different ***.
i don't care that much for the ***like the bible because i can't believe some guy walked across the water or turned water into wine etc., that ***is crazy. it's a waste of time, i heard the stories and all that and it doesn't interest me.
the part i can't agree with atheists is that people who believe in a God means you're unintelligent, there's thousands of people who believe in God and they're more successful then either me or you.
so how are they less intelligent if they're much more successful at life then people like you and me? ***just falls into their lap? i don't think so.

thanks for proving the point, you're the same as the crazy religious people. Blind obedient faith does not make you smart, expecially in the light of NO evidence.
There is nothing in your daily life except religion that you can take the same way. Name 1 thing you take with no evidence like you do religion only on faith in your daily live. There is nothing. Scientific evidence is required for belief unless it's religion, then it's faith... this is because you want there to be something else. Your hoping for the evidence to arise, and it won't.
Science has explained everything of how we have gotten here except what happened at the very beginning. This proof is irrifutable evidence that... and listen closely, that if there is a god, he has no control over anything except creating the birth of the universe. I'm not saying there is no god. Because no one could ever know that, however i do not believe in a god, nor can any thinking person. Evolution is a fact.
Humans have put labels on gods, and written books using false information and lies. If there is a god, we know nothing about him. And no one has ever written the truth about such a god. It is so clearly obvious of this fact.
If you want to argue for a personal god that put things in motion and outside of that has no control over anything. Then i'm all for it. It's logical and it fills in many gaps that science has yet explained. But you're going to argue the whole 7 days, adam and eve, or koran standpoint, your clearly ignorant of things that have been PROVEN as fact. Like evolution.
And if thats what your doing, i have one word for you.
Dinosaurs.

i don't understand, how is it a fact? it's made by a human, just like the bible.
it seems for a lot of you this ***consumes a lot of your time reading about evolution etc., and like i said before, i don't really care that much for it. so just bear with me.
but you didn't explain how are they less intelligent IF they have a higher IQ than you, make more money etc., doesn't that mean they're smarter than you?
maybe their God doesn't exist whatever, and yes, to believe something like that is strange, but to me, believing in God is about the same as believing in Aliens and i know some very smart people who believe in that. i don't think they're less intelligent than me, i just think they're crazy to think that.

you don't think 2000 yrs from now people are going to be LOLing at you guys believing in evolution when a new scientist comes out with a new theory?
i don't think religion is right either, i'm just saying people can be wrong but still be smart. you can't be right about everything, and that's their mulligan.
but it really seems atheism consumes your life about as much as religion does for theists. which, to me, is interesting because i would think you'd be much more free to live your life rather than prove others to be idiots etc.,
it seems to be a waste of time to me, but i don't know cuz i really don't dwell on things of that nature and ***.

i can agree with that, i'm just a simple man and i'm not saying atheists or theists wrong i'm too stupid to be able to prove either or wrong or right, i just think it's wrong to think someone's an idiot because he believes different from you, no matter how outlandish you may think it is. especially since a lot of religion is usually part of a person's culture.

You may be the dumbest person I've ever taken the time to actually address, or one of the best trolls. I mean that as more a retrospect, than an insult.
1. Science is adaptable. Meaning: If a new theory comes about and shows a current theory to be wrong we (pause for effect) accept the new theory and stop believing the old theory. If evolution was proven wrong (it won't be, as said before: there is more evidence for evolution than almost every other theory -ever- made, including gravity, the earth being round, and the atomic theory), we would still gladly move to a new theory IF that theory provided evidence.
That's the difference between science and religion. Religion sticks with the original theory regardless of evidence, till the end of time.
2. We're not saying people are dumb if they're religious. We're saying being religious is dumb. I have a very high IQ, but if I stuck a fork into a light socket, that would be dumb. I work directly in the science field, and you're right: There are theists here. However, and this is very important: There are a *** TON less than there are at lower levels of education.
Theism decreases exponentially as education increases.
3. Atheism doesn't "Consume our lives". The people here do however value standards on facts enough to enlighten people like you via discussion and dialogue. Dialogue that is most likely above your head.
4. Those "crazy theories" we have for evolution, cosmology, etc, have a MASSIVE amount of evidence, that if you took the time to learn, would demonstrate just how obtuse you're being in this argument.
Google the argument from ignorance, it's a standard logical fallacy that a person uses when they're attempting to say that a fact is impossible because "they cannot understand it". That's your entire argument in a nutshell.
Put down the keyboard, grab a book, and join us again in 3-4 years.
