No Sound Effects, Help Please

I reinstalled the game after a long break. When I got on all the music works just fine, but the sound effects don't work at all. I've checked the menu for sound effects. I have gone into the config of windower and made sure max sounds isn't a 0. I think it may have a problem to do with the registry. Does anyone know an easy fix? I don't wanna have to reinstall the whole game again, especially since my dvd drive is very touchy on reading disks.

I'm hoping it's an easy fix.

I figured it out. I did both of these at the same time, so I'm not sure which fixed it. In the windower GUI I changed max sounds to 5 (instead of my previous 0). Then I changed the sounds in the FFXI config from 12 to the highest, and I think that's what actually fixed it.

With Max sounds set to 0, the only thing that will play is zone music.
