Jaerik, what's YOUR opinion on the Ebisu being considered a relic? Not for points or anything, but being pictured on someone's page. After all, you and the other mods/admins (seems to be a democratic relationship here, that's cool) do have the final say.

I think the hardest thing about the Ebisu rod is getting the fishing skill. I'm under the impression a player needs near capped fishing skill to even think about obtaining the Ebisu rod. That said, players already get achievement for the fishing skill. I can't imagine someone with Fishing100 skill having the same difficulty in getting Ebisu as it would take to get either an Emp weapon or even a relic. If I'm wrong about the difficulty after already have 100 fishing, I can't imagine it being much more difficult or time consuming than getting an emp weapon.
That said, I don't think the big achievement is the rod, but the 100 skill. Not everyone bots their fishing skill. However, I don't see any harm in showing the icon for having obtained it.

I've always been open to the idea, and completely understand the argument for it being considered as any other achievement requiring significant time investment, but the slippery slope argument legitimately worries me.
We already grant a pretty major Achievement bonus to having Fishing at 100, and the item itself seems it could lead to gray areas involving double counting.

Sounds like it's a lot of luck based. We don't get achievements for having a Kraken club. Nor should we get achievements for having 2 Kraken clubs.

It is luck-based, as is everything in this game.
If there's an actual physical Xbox Live achievement for having this rod, then I think there should be an FFXIAH achievement.
And the Xbox achievements are harsh. 75 in one job nets like 5 points. Finishing CoP is 10 points. And getting a relic or this rod is 15.

the Xbox achievements aren't harsh, they're just stupid. At the time the Xbox version was released, there were 100 relics in existance, yet they netted you less points than having a craft skill at 100.

I can't really agree with this on the point that everything in the game is based on luck. If it is luck based, someone could technically go 1/1 on it? You can't really go 1/1 on an emp or a relic. You have to keep grinding whatever out knowing where the endmark is. There isn't much luck to this in my opinion. Just continuous effort at the remainder towards the goal.

When you have some people going 1/10 and others 1/1000+
sounds like luck to me.

The level 75 job achievements are worth 30points. Which was still harsh considering the time it took to level a 75 pre-abyssea.

What about having it as an achievement with no points? A simple decoration to the page if you will. Any ebisu owner would appreciate that at least and already feel a sense of pride with getting 100 fishing and ebisu. We have very limited power to decorate our own player pages and this is just one way to do it.

I agree with the Kalila girlie. I'd love to have my Ebisu plastered on my page even as a no-point achievement. No-pointing it as an achievement is also ideal, seeing as the process is COMPLETELY random and based on luck in obtaining the Saber Shoot and the Opal Silk.
Achievement points are a joke now anyways, what with everything becoming easier and easier to accomplish. I mean, consider the next two updates, relics and mythics will be extremely easy to obtain, once again skewing the achievement ideals.

well with relics & myths easier to obtain, the ebisu could probably be the most difficult item in game.
due to the fact that u need to skill fishing to 78 first (i remember of skill level 12 and trying to get to 19 in selbina, +0,1 in 1 1/2h when i had luck ><,fish cap for 440ish per rl day still active?)
so u have to spend months for fishing itself, then u need the GP KI and the 2 KI's (wiki states that some ppl had to do 1k+ trades to obtain them) to do the quest itself.

I agree with you completely but the fact is a lot of players fish solely on boting and don't even bother fishing legit. It is those players who ruin it for all the rest and belittle an achievement such as ebisu~

Before I say anything: I do not bot, and have never botted fishing or anything else.
I don't care either way about Ebisu counting for an achievement. That being said, the argument that it should not be considered an achievement because it can be easily botted is a bit silly, especially considering that bot fishing (or any other ToS-breaking activity) may entirely/partially fund those relics you see people running around with, and influence numerous other things that are recognized as achievements on this site.
As Jaerik mentioned, the system isn't perfect. People may have achievements that don't "deserve" them, but it doesn't follow that the achievement system should be entirely removed because it is not 100% accurate. So why withhold making Ebisu rod an achievement even though there is undoubtedly a certain percentage that have obtained it through illicit means? Again, I don't mind that obtaining an Ebisu rod is not an achievement, but I think it a bit unfair to reason that this is true because "it can be easily botted." There are better arguments for not having it as an achievement.
edit: 1/372 Opal Silk, 1/1207 Saber Shoot.

Asura.Alymorel said: Tbh, the only people I've really seen with Ebisu are fish bots. Obvious fish bots at that. I don't feel like being able to turn your bot on and walk away is an achievement.
And there are more and more quite obvious bots, and not just fish bots, these days. GMs don't care about them anymore either. Try to report one and all you get is an automated message saying go to some website and fill out a report and even then, I have a feeling they don't look at those either.
Saying this is as hard to get as an Empryean weapon, no. You have to at least be at the computer the entire time and actually doing stuff. I think (and I hate to say this) Draylo put it best...
Leviathan.Draylo said: You can't 100% bot relics. You can't just afk and come back to a bunch of empy items in your inventory... You have to actually farm/buy pop items, pop the said NM, proc red, kill it etc etc. No bot that can do all that for someone while they afk.
i think this could use some analysis from the perspective of a botter.
i really can't disagree more. the thing is, up until the latest update, us botters had no incentive to get an eisbu.
you could make 95% of the profit with zero effort on black soles. every eisbu fish was an utter pain to fish.
going for an eisbu not only means you have to go through a ton of non bottable effort to traverse vanideil and bring in guild fish, it also means you are going to break your lu's. a lot. even if you have woodworking, there's no easy way to bot something that breaks your rod.
this means lots of manual fishing, or at least not being afk, for getting an eisbu
as a botter i've never considered it worth the effort, and i probably never will.
despite that, i do think it deserves achievement points, because it's one of the hardest things(or at least one of the things requiring the most patience) left to do in the game by default
as almost everything besides eisbu has gotten far, far easier

Like that fish bot I saw on ffevo that would fix your broken rod?
I'd just like to start a petition that the Ebisu Fishing Rod counts as a relic. Not necessarily achievements if it doesn't fit into the formula, but listed under your name, similar to how Maat's cap used to be a relic.
Ebisu is still very hard to obtain, and even if someone was able to fishbot their way to 100 fishing, they still have to get the very expensive key item from the fishing guild and do days and days of fishing to Zaldon's quest to acquire the rod.
If anyone agrees or disagrees, feel free to post pro's and con's here ^^
If you're not familar, the rod is a better unbreakable version of Lu Shang's, and rare/ex. Info here:
http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Ebisu_Fishing_Rod
Info on the quest to obtain:

Thanks!
