I think Bart would make a good mod, or Stefanos, maybe Nighfyre, too. I'm sure there are others that I can't think of right now.

I would make a good mod. All I have to do is try.

NO.

I like Bart, Stefanos and Nightfyre and I don't want to stick it to them.

Incidentally, we've gotten over $250 in donations just today.

You guys didn't have to do that, but it's definitely appreciated and we certainly won't turn it down. Thanks.

We look for a few things in potential moderators:

- Consistency in behavior. I don't want to give you powers and have you suddenly turn into a different person on me.

- No tendency towards cliqueishness. If you're a popular kid who runs with one small group and has a history of treating certain folks better than others, I can't assume you'll change once I give you more responsibility.

- Good judgment. If you've got a history of warnings, temp bans, topic bans, or other examples of you failing to exercise good judgment in what you say and to whom, you're pretty much disqualified.

- Maturity. Being a moderator is not fun. You will no longer be allowed to participate in normal forum discussion and can't have friends.

If you appear to be wanting to be a mod to be a "normal user plus additional coolness," that expresses you're probably not ready and/or don't understand what would be asked of you.

(Edit: You may disagree that some of those we promoted to moderator satisfy these conditions, but we don't take into consideration the opinion of other users when trying to decide.)

I always kind of felt like there needed to be a little bit more support, because not all the mods can be on at the same time and having a couple more would help lighten the load.

So, what is the average amount to run this site per month? Just curious.

I don't know the number anymore, but last one I was given is more than what's on the donation page.

At the time the donations page was made $820. but times have changed so probably a bit more.

That's discouraging, but it seems like there is already some progress, as far as people's behavior, just in the past day.

In a nutshell: we need off-topic (i.e. not just FFXI/XIV) forum participation in order to drive enough impression traffic to support the rest of the site. The question we're wrestling with is how much.
I agree that off- topic forums are essential to this site. I think perhaps they just need more moderation then they are currently getting. Perhaps find someone who meets your requirements and can cover peak hours, and maybe another who can cover late hours.

There do seem to be other options than simply "turning up" the moderation level, I would guess.

To put this in perspective, I remember Jaerik once stating in a post somewhere (of course I can't find it now) that forum users account for roughly 1%-4% of site traffic, in terms of unique hits I think the metric was?

The fact that a decided minority of posters within that set of users(regular/casual/lurker/whatever) can endanger the revenue stream for the entire site (forum users and that majority that use the ffxiah.com AH DB of items and transactions) is a bit alarming, for sure. So I do understand Jaerik and Scragg's need to necessarily protect the site's future over individual "forum user liberty."

That being said, because the forum is that much a minority of traffic, perhaps there can just be an "access wall" type segregation from the normal site that would appease Google's marketing/policy people. Setting it so that there is some user-validation to enter the forums (with some mandatory disclaimer or warning or such with a YES/NO navigation thing) would technically isolate it from the regular traffic, even if the links to the forum on the main page are maintained (or removed.)

Thus the forum still gets as much use as it did because forum users wouldn't mind going extra steps to access it, and would have the same amount of ad-revenue hits from usage, and users could still be free to participate "candidly" (some would call it flaming/trolling), but the "questionable portion" is isolated from casual site traffic.

That sort of 'segregation' by site architecture, coupled with other Scragg-created global features like profanity filters as good-faith measures, might be enough to make Google satisfied again...given that trying to "prove" that heavier levels of moderation are in effect and are making a difference is somewhat subjective and hard to do.

TLDR (cause I roll like dat): Perhaps separating the forum portion from the main site, since that is the source of the issue, with additional navigational steps might be enough to convince Google to stay on, since changes of that nature are more easily demonstrated than "users are now behaving better...honest."

Forum traffic has increased quite a bit relative to other site traffic as FFXI has tapered off and XIV mostly bombed. It's definitely an important part of the community to preserve as a core feature.

I am still genuinely curious as to what could be so distasteful that GoogleAds got butthurt. They're not exactly a shining beacon discernment, allowing malware/virus laced ads to be propagated through their ad distribution service with nary a tip of the multi-billion dollar hat.

He said earlier that the traffic from the off topic portion alone is essential to keeping the site running.

I think you're confusing statistics. maybe 4% of users actually post, that still seems kind of low but even if that's true, that's different from 4% of the users using the forums. a large part of the forum user don't actually post.

Also keep in mind that AH users probably spend very little time using AH, they're in, browse a few pages and done. It means they generate less traffic individually but also they also encounter less adds.
