Within that chaos is the ability to learn more about yourself as much as it is about others. Though that certainly is more difficult with some more than others, but I hope you understand the premise of what I am saying here. I'm not saying block everyone who is a minor annoyance to you, just the people who annoy you so much that the only communications you would have with said individual would be that of sheer contempt. I don't find much to gain out of that.
Leviathan.Chaosx said: It's just mine (and other people's) personal policy. It's not meant to be universal. If you (or others) want to block people then go ahead. That's not what I meant by universal, I was just meaning that I didn't want it to be misconstrued into a personal attack :P
Wombat said: I'm torn on it. The only person I have blocked is Elana. The problem is that everyone quotes his posts anyway, so most of them are still totally accessible.
Until I blocked him, I had a strict 'no blocking' policy. Ended up being sort of pointless--save the satisfaction of not being able to see at least some of his posts. Yeah the quoting does make it less helpful :/

For free you could use the option to check AH prices, but anything else would require you to pay. $1-$5 a month is not too much to ask I think. Leviathan.Chaosx said: For just the price of an extra mule, you can keep this website up and free from censorship.
I figured someone would eventually throw this idea around.
Not to trounce your idea or be a Negative Nancy, but you'd basically be asking people to pay for the right to misbehave?
Without ANY offense intended (this is not specifically directed at you, Chaosx), if one has such a burning need to misbehave and banter that one is willing to PAY a subscription fee to do it ... then why not go fool around on a website that is DESIGNED for said purpose ... for free?
That's a serious question. Wouldn't be any fun with random strangers on the internet with no common ties.
The fact that you have to have a registered character on FFXI or FFXIV at least gives people one thing they all have in common.
Ok, I hear your answer here, and it makes some sense.
But, if that's really the reason, (again, no personal offense intended) then you want to pay to keep your friends?
If you (again not you specifically) and the people you want to continue camaraderie with here REALLY want to stick together as a clique, and be in a "censorship-free" environment ... then why not start up an internet board of your own, and only invite the people you want to hang with?
Again, that's a serious question. It sounds to me like you'd be willing to pay a subscription fee to be allowed to misbehave with your friends here, rather than take you and your friends elsewhere to your own free private playground.
You need a mix of all kinds of people. Otherwise it would be like that episode of the 'Twilight Zone' where you always win and everyone agrees with you all the time. So ... you need an exclusive group that has some common bond (e.g. plays FFXI/FFXIV) but yet you need a mix of all kinds of people?
I'm trying to follow the logic here, but it's getting more difficult. It sounds like you want to use a board only for gamers, but you want to make sure there's all kinds of gamers in there. If that's so, I don't think that would be too difficult to create and/or find (already existing) elsewhere ... on a site that doesn't have to answer to sponsors to remain viable. That way you can "have your cake and eat it to" ... you just won't be able to do that here on *this* board. It's not hard logic to follow. Sure there are a lot of other sites for a specific game where you can chat about other subjects as well, but I like this site and have no desire to pick up and go to another one.
OP was just asking for a way to make up the lost revenue, not a detailed psychological profile on posting. It seemed to me a $1-5/month a user was the simplest solution. I'm not saying it's the best or ultimate solution just the easiest way to keep things the way they are.

If it means the site gets to keep going I'll watch myself, but I'd rather pay a bit every month to keep it the way it is, with maybe a couple things changed. Couldn't agree more here. I don't like the whole Google doesn't like your language thing either.

Not everyone is happy with the way things are, myself included. I'm looking forward to seeing the mods step in and bust some heads.

I was hoping there could have been some legal loophole in explaining that the forums are merely an optional feature on the side and differs from the primary purpose and source of information this site provides. Though in the end that probably doesn't matter much to Google's advertising policy.

This, definitely.
If it were me modding this place, there'd be no section for politics or religion, there'd be no LGBT threads, there'd be no "Flame Core," there'd be no "Undead" section... basically the entire "Everything Else" section would get nuked because we dont need any of it.

Guess i'll be glad your not modding it then... Honestly one of my fav. parts of this site is how if you want to have a serious discussion about the game theres spots for that but if you want some out of game discussion as well you don't need to find another web site just for that.

Now, now, I *never* said anything negative or derogatory about the Politics, religion, or LGBT threads here. I simply said users should exercise some restraint and be held to a standard of demonstrating modicum of maturity.
Also, thank you for being so nice, Urial.

Blocking helps nothing. All it does is give you a childish "Nah Nah I can't hear you" mentality.
peoples posts have a long reaching effect in a thread and are quoted often.
It's pointless.

Hello, fine peoples of FFXIAH.
As some of you may know by now--and if you have no clue what I'm talking about, check this post out before reading any further--Google pulled their advertising from this website because of "the amount of sheer profanity, nastiness, and other behavior exhibited on the forums was so bad, they no longer want to be associated with our brand. In other words, the behavior of our forum users has now put the future of the site itself at actual, tangible risk."
Yeah. That doesn't sound too good to me, either. What it boils down to is that the forum users have caused this site to lose one of their major sources of advertisements. Okay, no big deal, you may say. I am now going to point out something on a page that no one seems to visit anymore: "Our current hosting expense is $820/month." That's a bit of a bill, if you ask me. Who knows if that number has gotten larger since Scragg wrote that? The website's user base isn't exactly dwindling by any means.
We, the users, all share some portion of the blame. Oh yes, some more than others, but inactivity and apathy towards the state of the forums has truly hit the website where it hurts now. We, the users, all use this website, and now what I imagine the primary source of revenue that keeps this website afloat has been knocked away. It's been bad enough that I bet half of us used ad-blocking when the ads were there. Now it's even worse than that.
I also cannot find the exact post, but I want to point out that the website doesn't turn a profit. Jaerik has stated several times, as I recall, that this website is a loss straight through and through.
So what am I getting at?
Well, things are looking kind of grim. If you want to thank this website for being a gosh darn excellent tool and the admins for always being attentive to us, if you want to thank them for doing us the favor of running this website even when we haven't been the most agreeable, most thankful users, or if you just want to help keep the site afloat in some troubled times, I implore you to please go to http://www.ffxiah.com/donations and make a donation.
Honestly, after what the developers created for us and what we put the administration through it's the least we can do.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I truly hope with all my heart that even in these harsh economic times that we can muster up a few dollars to give back to the website.
