Leave me alone, Artemicion. You hear what you want to hear, not what I'm saying. And that's not only pathetic, it's rude.
You're free to block my posts anytime you wish, if you can't get past seeing what I say as "pretentious".
Ok?
I see what I see. It's as simple as that.
You can be defensive and request that I block you or you can stop making defeatist excuses and address your own contradictions.
I simply can't help but find a great deal of irony in someone who wishes so dearly to rid the forums of abrasive hard *** and redundant filth bring his own brand to the table.
You can also ignore him and not add drama where drama is not wanted... which is everywhere (except soap operas of course).
The donations aren't in any way meant to try and change the new policies. It's because a source of revenue was just destroyed and this website is entirely too good to lose.
Meh. Honestly.
It's good, but it's not "too good".
It might be "too good" for those who live on XI lol.
It's got a massive database with a very pristine powersearch function that has every item in the game.
It logs every transaction made since its inception.
Whatever this is, it's a powerful piece of software. It is also extremely solid (rarely crashes or has downtime) and has great community functions as well as tools to keep track of just about anything in game.
I'd call that too good, personally.
I agree, Xueye, 100%.
Don't mind Vinvv by the way, he simply has a burning innate need to contradict EVERY post and statement made, regardless of whether or not it's logical or constructive.
I love to contradict people so much that I even contradict myself.(since they all know what you really are)
My lovely puppet of sock.
My apologies. This thread is for the sake of continuing a great site.
Donate if you will, it will be for a great cause regardless of where our forums stand. After all, this is for perhaps one of the most highly functional and intuitive sites for Final Fantasy XI over any other. The forums are simply a feature within.

To be honest I'd be happy with a solution like paying $1-$5 to keep the forums the way they are now.
For free you could use the option to check AH prices, but anything else would require you to pay. $1-$5 a month is not too much to ask I think.

I figured someone would eventually throw this idea around.
Not to trounce your idea or be a Negative Nancy, but you'd basically be asking people to pay for the right to misbehave?
Without ANY offense intended (this is not specifically directed at you, Chaosx), if one has such a burning need to misbehave and banter that one is willing to PAY a subscription fee to do it ... then why not go fool around on a website that is DESIGNED for said purpose ... for free?
That's a serious question.
Wouldn't be any fun with random strangers on the internet with no common ties.
The fact that you have to have a registered character on FFXI or FFXIV at least gives people one thing they all have in common.
Ok, I hear your answer here, and it makes some sense.
But, if that's really the reason, (again, no personal offense intended) then you want to pay to keep your friends?
If you (again not you specifically) and the people you want to continue camaraderie with here REALLY want to stick together as a clique, and be in a "censorship-free" environment ... then why not start up an internet board of your own, and only invite the people you want to hang with?
Again, that's a serious question. It sounds to me like you'd be willing to pay a subscription fee to be allowed to misbehave with your friends here, rather than take you and your friends elsewhere to your own free private playground.

Yeah it may seem ideal on paper, but I've never been one to see ignorance as a solution.

You need a mix of all kinds of people. Otherwise it would be like that episode of the 'Twilight Zone' where you always win and everyone agrees with you all the time.

So ... you need an exclusive group that has some common bond (e.g. plays FFXI/FFXIV) but yet you need a mix of all kinds of people?
I'm trying to follow the logic here, but it's getting more difficult. It sounds like you want to use a board only for gamers, but you want to make sure there's all kinds of gamers in there. If that's so, I don't think that would be too difficult to create and/or find (already existing) elsewhere ... on a site that doesn't have to answer to sponsors to remain viable. That way you can "have your cake and eat it to" ... you just won't be able to do that here on *this* board.
Also, ignoring people and/or blocking them is not better either.
This x 9000+.
I have a policy of never blocking or /blist people no matter how idiotic or annoying they may be.
I have a similar philosophy when it comes to the block feature.
Even people I particularly dislike, I let their word roam free because to block someone is only essentially sweeping dirt under the rug. It does nothing to rid of the problem, but rather only breeds willful ignorance. Also on a more dire term, it reminds me of a quote from Fable:
"To kill (block) someone not only ends what they were and currently are, but also ends what they could have been."

This is my policy as well... sure its nice to not see someone's stuff that you don't like sometimes but I'd rather everything be where i can see it then going on behind my back...
If someone annoys you, why would you willingly read their posts? Trust me, you're not going to change them by arguing with them over everything. I'm certain that they, just like you, do not care what someone on the internet thinks about their ideas. So rather than waste your time and cause a big scene that will inevitably change absolutely nothing, why not just block them and save everyone the hassle?
Edit: This was aimed at no one in particular, it's a universal you.

Because seeing only what you want to see, hearing what you want to hear, and ignoring even that which breeds conflict is one step closer to a Stepford Wives environment.
Within that chaos is the ability to learn more about yourself as much as it is about others. Though that certainly is more difficult with some more than others, but I hope you understand the premise of what I am saying here.
Unfortunately I can't donate anything, I'm not even playing FFXI at the moment, although I probably will be coming back soon.
One bad apple spoils the bunch eh? I've had my share of F words or something fly out of my mouth, and I enjoy reading the happy trolls like posting ponies in a non-pony thread, it's all in good fun. The personal attacks, flame wars etc I usually skip over so this kinda took me by surprised.
I've moderated and even ran my own forums before and we've always had very strict rules on what is and is not allowed and the consequences of breaking those rules. I paid the bill myself, but it was small since the site wasn't much more than a forum. We didn't have sponsors to comply with but I can certainly see why this site needs to do so and a new set of at least more well defined rules would help out a lot. The ones who don't like it will leave or get banned, everyone else will enjoy the forum, and the sites image will improve and hopefully they can get the advertising back.
In the end though... I'm not paying for censorship... so everyone watch their mouth, comply with the new rules, and hopefully this issue will be a thing of the past.
However if this site could stay the way it is, maybe with tighter enforcement on the all out just being a jackass grade a flame waring troll for the cost of a small donation or subscription every month, I'd find a way to pay it. I just don't like having to bow down to the great Google and their "you guys have a potty mouth we're pulling your monies" but unfortunately that's the way the world works. If it means the site gets to keep going I'll watch myself, but I'd rather pay a bit every month to keep it the way it is, with maybe a couple things changed.

It's just mine (and other people's) personal policy. It's not meant to be universal. If you (or others) want to block people then go ahead.

I'm torn on it. The only person I have blocked is Elana. The problem is that everyone quotes his posts anyway, so most of them are still totally accessible.
Until I blocked him, I had a strict 'no blocking' policy. Ended up being sort of pointless--save the satisfaction of not being able to see at least some of his posts.

For me personally because even if I hate someone guts with a flameing passion (no one in these forums that i know of :P) that doesn't meen they have nothing to offer or that their opinion is instantly invalid to me. (look at that run on sentence go, I should totally be in bed right now XD) In the end blocking doesn't actually fix anything you can't do your self, if you really dont want to read their posts just scroll down when you see their avatar/name.
As some of you may know by now--and if you have no clue what I'm talking about, check this post out before reading any further--Google pulled their advertising from this website because of "the amount of sheer profanity, nastiness, and other behavior exhibited on the forums was so bad, they no longer want to be associated with our brand. In other words, the behavior of our forum users has now put the future of the site itself at actual, tangible risk."
Yeah. That doesn't sound too good to me, either. What it boils down to is that the forum users have caused this site to lose one of their major sources of advertisements. Okay, no big deal, you may say. I am now going to point out something on a page that no one seems to visit anymore: "Our current hosting expense is $820/month." That's a bit of a bill, if you ask me. Who knows if that number has gotten larger since Scragg wrote that? The website's user base isn't exactly dwindling by any means.
We, the users, all share some portion of the blame. Oh yes, some more than others, but inactivity and apathy towards the state of the forums has truly hit the website where it hurts now. We, the users, all use this website, and now what I imagine the primary source of revenue that keeps this website afloat has been knocked away. It's been bad enough that I bet half of us used ad-blocking when the ads were there. Now it's even worse than that.
I also cannot find the exact post, but I want to point out that the website doesn't turn a profit. Jaerik has stated several times, as I recall, that this website is a loss straight through and through.
So what am I getting at?
Well, things are looking kind of grim. If you want to thank this website for being a gosh darn excellent tool and the admins for always being attentive to us, if you want to thank them for doing us the favor of running this website even when we haven't been the most agreeable, most thankful users, or if you just want to help keep the site afloat in some troubled times, I implore you to please go to http://www.ffxiah.com/donations and make a donation.
Honestly, after what the developers created for us and what we put the administration through it's the least we can do.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I truly hope with all my heart that even in these harsh economic times that we can muster up a few dollars to give back to the website.
