Final Fantasy 7 Remake

I'd love to see a FF7 remake, but my expectations are far too high. I'd rather not taint the memories I have of it.

Very excited for XIII-2 also, and I think your right on with the rest. I think SE has more potential to making a better game than struggling to remake an old one.

Realism. When VII was released it was very graphically impressive when compared to other games on the market, which helped not only sell the game, but the PS itself, as VII was released nearer the beginning of the PS1's life cycle. A VII remake will not have that edge, as we're in the middle of the PS3's, and that's with a completely remade graphics engine. VII had sold an estimated 9.8 million copies by 2005, which really is your best case scenario for sales of a remake, but you have to remove all the people that originally bought the game and didn't like it, and the people that don't care about new graphics at the risk of SE ruining a game they love. The game is popular enough that you will not get many investigative purchases, people know the game and where they stand on it.

Also remember video games have improved over the years, not only graphically but in substance as well, and for a lot of people, VII no longer passes muster.

A remake of VII would basically sell on nostalgia, which is what Dirge sold on, because it had VII slapped on the front. And that was about 1 million units.

A large company like SE will have already performed the internal surveys and focus groups necessary to estimate how may units it will sell.

Point being, if fans want a remake of FF7 which matches the production value of current-gen games, it will need to sell just as many copies as a new current-gen FF game to be profitable. (5-6M copies worldwide.)

They would be starting from scratch on everything that actually costs serious money: code and graphics. The original art reference is lost, and the code does not transfer from one console to the next. Story and scripts are basically free.
