FFXI on PS3 and widescreen
By Secaoftitan 2011-02-22 17:21:32
I just got a BC PS3 and finally got FFXI loaded onto it. I logged on quickly and it seems to work just fine. My question though, is that the PS3 is emulating the PS2 in 4:3 instead of 16:9. On my old PS2 I could just go into setting and adjust the video settings to fill my widescreen TV, but I don't seem to be able to do that on PS3. So right now the playonline screen and game itself run with two large black bars on either side. Were any of you other PS3'ers able to overcome this?
tldr: How do you format the screen on the PS3's emulation of a PS2?

-Seca You have to change the settings when you are actually in game I was pretty sure in like the config menu.
edit: there is also a full-screen function in the PS3 interface as well.
pretty sure you can just edit that in the video settings section., but other than that the rest is in config.

Zero- yeah, I don't think it's in the actual game config. Well, it is but it isn't.
Lavelios - Awesome, I'm happy to know it's possible. I'm looking through all the settings now. This PS3 is only 2 days old to me so I'm still learning how it all works.

Seca I played with the same problem for a good while and I think it's just that you have to configure both the PS3 video settings in tandem with the XI settings(i think it's in like the general section of config gleaming it off my brain atm), I can double check when I get home in an hour and a half if you want?

I have this problem as well, just bought a 55" & have been on ps3 for what seems like years. sadly, I couldn't figure it out. pretty sure I tried in-game config... idk

Under the PS3 menu I found "game setting" and changed the PS/PS2 up-scaler from "normal" to "full screen." That has seemed to mostly work. There is still a 1 inch bar on the top and bottom of the screen, and about a 3" bar on either side. I also changed the aspect ratio on the in-game config menu so everything didn't look fat. Below is the picture of what it now looks like. I'm happy with this (much better then before), but if anyone knows how I can fill in those black bars that remain, I'd appreciate it.

...okay, I guess I don't know how to add an image from my computer. You guys will just have o take my word for this. ^^

Haha! Figured it out!
uh, I hope that's big enough to see the bars I'm talking about. Again, the PS3 menu fills the screen, as do movies and other PS3 games. It's only PlayOnline and FFXI. I haven't tried any other PS2 games. To recap what I've done: I went to "Game Settings" on the PS3 menu screen and changed PS/PS2 Upscaler from "normal" to "full screen." That changed the aspect ratio from 4:3 to what it is now, which seems a little shy of filling my TV.
I also just noticed that when I logged into my PS2 to save my macros before packing it up officially, was that FFXI didn't quite fill the screen then, either. There was about 2" on either side, but none on the top or bottom. I'd try to change my TV settings for this particular input, but I don't wanna mess up other PS3 games or movies I run through the PS3.
tldr: take a look at that screen shot of FFXI being run on a BC 60gb PS3 and if you know how I can tweak the aspect ratio a bit more, please let me know.

SS is way too small.
maybe upload it to imageshack.us or something?
I think it has to do with you having a 32 incher though.
But that's just because I have a 40" that fits just fine. lol.

I'm pretty sure that's gonna be the best you can do if you edited the settings in the upscaler to full screen and changed it to 16:9 in the config...
if anyone knows any different correct me on this lol.

I'm necro bumping this to avoid just creating a new thread.
I have a question for ps3 users; Do I still need a backwards compatible ps3 to play FFXI or have they made it a download on PSN yet?
I'm considering picking up a ps3, and I'd like to play ffxi on it, as well as other things.

i believe you will need a backwards capable ps3 to run the disc to install ffxi.
to my knowledge there is no psn download for the ffxi.
if you do get a backwards capable ps3, once you install the game via disc, you wont need to have the disc in you ps3 to play the game cause its saved to your hdd.
a little side note: if you do get a older ps3, be weary of what you buy. i bought a ps3 brand new from game stop and it failed on me after a firmware update(yellow light of death). i sent it back to sony, it was out of warranty of course, and they sent me a refurbished one for $155. 3 months later after another one of their updates that one failed on me(ylod). at that point the new slim ps3 was out. they sent me one of those. 120gig refurbished for another $155.
this is just one bad story. but at least do some research before you buy a older ps3 type. so far the slim works fine.

Thanks, I'm just fishing for info, since I haven't heard anything recently on this. I'm still on the fence as to if I'll pick up a ps3 or not.

You need a backward compatable Ps3. The last one release was part of the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle pack. Once you get it, there is a free download from the PSN store you need to get, which I believe allows the HDD to be able to be partitioned PS2 usage, for the few games that used to require the PS2 HDD.
A few notes, however, from my previous experience playing FFXI on the PS3:
1. Graphics are shitty. I would say worse than PS2. The HDMI made it look horribly pixilated. Best option I found was using a set of Y/R/W/S-Video cables, and having both the yellow and S-Video plugged in. Only using the yellow cause the image to be overly blurry, while the S-Video looked overly pixilated. Using both strangely cleaned it up a bit.
2. Unless you are setting everything up on a desk to play like a PC, You will need to dish out a fair bit for a decent wireless keyboard. You can buy a Bluetooth keyboard, but you will have to also get a USB-Bluetooth adaptor. This is due to the PS3 not supporting Bluetooth accessories and controllers while under the backwards compatable mode (Official PS3 controllers DO work, but they are the only ones)
3. Lag is horrible as well.
4. There has been a long standing issue with PS2/PS3, and I think Xbox as well for some special cutscene zone changes. I had about a 80% chance of my system locking up whenever the screen would go black and the "downloading data" would pop up. This would occur when using the WHitegate telepad for assaults, and any maw, even for abyssea. When you log in, you will be in the zone you were entering. This caused a problem for me once abyssea was released. The server thinks you are in the abyssea zone, and will kick you out if you don't log in fast enough to get your entry status before the 5 minute timer expires.

bad updates don't cause the ylod, ylod is caused by an issue that can be fixed with a heat gun...
been there done that (took me a few months to get around to it) but all it took was some reflowing and fixed the ps3...
but no the "new" ps3's will not play ffxi or other ps2 games.
however it would be cheaper to purchase a used ps2, the network card and hard drive (assuming you have the discs) and a new ps3 than it would be a used 60gb ps3.
at least at the price I paid for it... (but I'm happy now so meh)...
TBH though in regards to FFXI on the ps3, it looks awfull trying to play it via upscaled, imo at least. I unhooked it from the one tv, ran it to the old crt via composite (thing is as old as me and has that input...) and it looked more natural than that upscaled monster...
However I typically play it in 1920/1080 anymore since I don't have internet where I live now I'm forced to tether...

beat, I have always used a usb keyboard with an extension when I play on console (it's much cheaper than a wireless) and the last issue I had when playing ps2 was the Sandy npc warp guy, which they moved him (I'm assuming to fix the error) (but I've yet to be in abyssea on the thing). however the 360 slim did lock up after a few hours of abyssea...
then again my pc locked up under Sandy last night so meh...

I had that same glitch on Ps2/Ps3 and when they moved him it fixed my glitch. I still have the glitch with other NPC's in areas but , I don't use them ever.
Also the download that was mentioned is called PS2 System Data. It is required for systems that are backwards compatible and IS required to install ffxi onto the ps3 bc vers. I had a 32" Dynex 720p Hdtv with the ps3 running through HDMi on it and the game actually looked good. Maybe the problem that you guys are experiencing with it being pixelated or jaggies is that you have a 1080p TV? I have never had a full 1080 so I am not sure if that would really cause an issue.
