This makes sense to me, now.
I don't know, and I am ok with never knowing in my life.
I can respect that. I'm just glad I got that book down. Because it's more than 300 pages, it counts as two books. So five down, sixteen to go.

Good reads.
I won't pass them off as great literature simply because I have yet to take the time to analyze them,, but good reads no less.

She is probably playing either her 47th witch or 24th ranger on PoE.

I can see the appeal and why people are in love with the series, but I have to put on my devil's advocate hat for a moment and say that I don't agree with some of the themes. Focus on a class system, rewards for blatant insubordination as well as a celebration of the bourgeois.

But as I said before, it does help students into the transition between reading young adult books to some of the toughest classics, so I'd still recommend it to my students.

You could play devils advocate to you though. Challenges against oppression/racism(kinda, cant think of a better word for it) and challenges to overthrow the class system later in the series!

Oh, they actually try to do away with the various "houses"? That would be better. I guess I'd have to go more into the series to see it in its entirety.

No.
Houses become irrelevant later in the book.
I forget that as of the first book you know nothing of the wizards world.
My counter is much later in the series.

Ah. Yeah, I only have the one book to go by so far. This is just my observation on those 300 pages.

Yeah...the series grows a develops far beyond those points. That being said some points of the first one are shown later in the series, but the political side of the series matures a lot.

He has to read them.
Given the age range he is gonna be teaching it's kinda required lol.

Pretty much this. It's not so much for enjoyment on my part, it's more of a pursuit of knowledge. 9/10 kids that are in school right now have an association with the series that is previously unmatched. The closest thing we had when I was a kid was the Goosebumps series, and we all know what that's degenerated into (ermagerd!). So, by reading these, I can get a better understanding of the series, which ensures that more of my curriculum can be related to the students. "Hamlet is like Harry Potter because..."

Wow, that last sentence actually hurt to type. But, I gadda do what I gadda do.

Lol, this reminds me that when I was on the phone with my Dad he was asking me about my Library job. I told him about how they asked me to do some book reviews, and then also to suggest some books they didn't have. When I told him the books I suggested he laughed and said, "Wow, I didn't know you were literate." He's got a Master's in English/Literature. His book collection back home is some where around 14,000 books... though it might have been more than that.

He's done several stints of teaching and substitute teaching(high school mostly and I think he stood in for a professor at a college when we lived in Minnesota). I don't remember what his Bachelor's was in. For most of his life though, he was an officer in the Army. He served for 31 years, though 1 of those years is off record. He was also a Green Beret etc.

xD Well really it's his first year where he was a Private First Class. They don't count it towards service time or whatever. At least... that's what he told me.
