swap around your radio channel to 1 6 or 11.

hve the router as high as possible

I wouldn't bother with the radio type unless it's on B/G mode.

N/G mix really shouldn't have any kind of radio problems unless you're far away.

I did this, it ranges from 8 ms to 206 ms

what is the latency from you and your local device?
should make a screencap

I would.

If their laptop is G only, there's no reason to have N enabled.

Well, I'm definitely getting a dog. Before I get my own place, I'm going to look into apartment complexes that allow animals so that I can ensure that I'll be able to have one. Also, I will try to be firm with whomever I'm with, but I have this tendency to be cowed on occasion. As firm as I will be on the subject, depending upon whom I end up with, it is very possible that one day there will be a feline in my place.

diagnose why your newer laptop isn't working properly.

I'd first make a restore point, then see about updating the driver.

Getting another wifi card should solve it, unless it's a software issue.

Are you letting windows manage the wireless connections or do you have a bloatware program doing it?

Well look at it this way. A new decent wifi card is much cheaper than a new decent router.

so, is there some type of wifi thing I can buy at the store that doesn't use my wifi card but the ethernet slot or w/e

I don't mind sitting by the router plugged in, but it's nice to have a laptop be portable <.<

There are a couple in Wisconsin. But then again, those aren't so much "apartment complexes" as they are "big red barns".

You can get a USB wifi device for like 35$ I think. As far as your wifi card, if it's internal and not easily removed, you can just disable it in windows.

they make USB wifi dongles.

I mean if you're good with a screwdriver you could replace (the probably mini-pci-e) wifi card on the device, and see how that works.

but I'd fiddle with the driver/settings and make sure it's just not an interference issue.

question: is your old laptop G only?

edit: what OS is on your main laptop, and the old one: respectively?

I'm told Vista has a shitty wireless stack.

wait, you can have internet through usb ? >.>;

I really don't know anything about computers <.<

This laptop was vista, upgraded to 7. Old one was the same, but started having screen issues and lines started forming on the screen.

This new one is by no means an upgrade, it was the best replacement I could buy at the time.

Actually using vista now (need a new storage device before I can use my copy of 7 (too much data to lose)) and the wireless works fine. Though I do have a good wifi card and rarely use it.

Honestly I rarely have any issues with Vista. Other than it using up more memory than is needed.

As much as I dislike Best Buy, if you are looking for a quick solution you can pick up tomorrow/today.

USB device

My sis has this one, and it works great.

hmm. that may be an issue.

it's never a good idea to do "upgrades" always fresh installs.

but without attempting it oneself, that's rather rough for noobs.

I'd personally play with the drivers/settings for awhile, as I'm a troubleshooting nerd, but if you want the quick fix, a quick USB dongle should solve you up.

(and yes, you can do just about anything over USB).

In fact, you could plug your computer directly up to your router via USB if that link was accurate earlier :P

I have a question for you then jet.

Is it possible to add more USB slots for a laptop? Like there are probably products that plug into a usb slot and it has 4 or so slots you can plug into.

Is that only for providing power, or would it also work as legit usb slots that you can plug an external HD in for example.

My sis has this one, and it works great.

1 card working =/= all cards working as they should.

Vista was a horrendous mess, glad I never attempted to use it.

I plan on skipping 8 as well.

(I hate when I have to work on somebody's Vista box... gah).

I'd sooner just pick up a linksys card at walmart, or bestbuy works if you want to go there.

I'd probably personally go here:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=105&cp_id=10501

and just wait for it to arrive.

If you're feeling brave with a screwdriver you could also order the miniPCI-E wireless card and just replace your internal nic, but I still don't believe anything is wrong with it, physically.

you can get a USB Hub, powered or non-powered.

obviously for portability you'd want non-powered, however then what devices you can plug into it are limited to ones that don't pull much current, like some flash drives, or a keyboard.

If you're using a powered hard drive (has a separate brick) it should work as well.

If you're at home, and use it at a desk a lot, get a powered hub, or you could even go as far as to get a docking station.
