WIRELESS NETWORK SETTINGS
Enable Wireless : (checked)
Wireless Network Name : ____________ (Also called the SSID)
802.11 Band : (x)2.4GHz ( )5GHz
802.11 Mode : Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b
Enable Auto Channel Scan : (checked)
Wireless Channel : 2.437 GHz - CH 6 (grayed out)
Transmission Rate : Best (automatic) (Mbit/s)
Channel Width : 20 MHz
Visibility Status : (x)Visible ( )Invisible

I personally hide my ssid and change it from the default, but anyone who's actually trying to get in can get past that rather easily, it's just to prevent most people from attempting to connect as they can't even see it and don't know how to find it.

but really if you don't use a wireless device you can just turn the wifi off.

either way that page doesn't give the information about the wireless security.

should be something about wpa wep wpa2 etc.

I use wpa2, I'd avoid WEP as it's rather easy to crack, but some devices need it (I believe like the DS lite, but not certain as I don't have one).

When I set mine up the last time, I change the ssid, default router password, separated my 2.4 and 5ghz bands, set up a decent password, didn't broadcast the ssid, only real ways to go above that is to disable wifi remote access to the router, disable dhcp and go pure static, and or just employ mac filtering.

I probably wouldn't use full static IP's, too much of a pain in the ***. I do have some devices left as static, like the printer, my server, and I'll probably have a few more when I build a few VM's to do some networking stuff.

wpa2 is cool.

and hmm, are you connected to the router on your PC via wifi or ethernet?

if wifi I'd play with the channel settings.

a firmware update may be in order.

or getting a new device...

does your phone have a removable sim card so you could try speedtest.net only on the wifi instead of also the 3/4g? (prolly not).

I forgot to say last time eagleeyes, have you heard the song "the war of 1812" that was popular a few years ago? it goes like

Quote:
And the white house burned, burned, burned.
And we're the ones that did it,
It burned, burned, burned.
While the president ran and cried,
It burned, burned, burned.
And things were very historical,
And the Americans ran and cried like a bunch of little babies WaWaWa
In the war of 1812.

If possible, can you do a wired connection (through the router) and see if you get the correct speeds?

Some firmware updates can improve (or hurt in a few cases) your router.

It could simply be your ISP.

try running a trace route

open up command prompt

enter in :

tracert google.com or any website really.

look for any connections with high latency

I'd try to do it via a ethernet cable and see if tehre's a difference.

updating the firmware may be able to fix some issues, but it's probably unlikely, and it could possibly brick the router if it fails.

blame the companies who want to keep it that way to profit.

nothing we can do about it either, unless some company comes in and revolutionizes it, or government interference. Most people are too complacent to strike.

Even if some company came in and did that, the status quo would have them in court so fast over some *** so fast it's not funny. Be like the cable companies getting pissed because satellite TV came in and whipped their *** with decent pricing.

They're a much smaller country, and their government helped with the network infrastructure update. FCC could change things but...well you know how inefficient our government system can be with dealing with the telecoms.

It's a laptop, the speed test with it connected to the router is also 20 mbps.

So the issue is the signal or my laptop wifi card?

Sure seems to be pointing to that. Do you have any other devices you can speedtest the wireless with?

could be the built in card being shitty, you wouldn't happen to have a pmcia slot would you? or know somebody who has a usb wifi dongle that they'd let you borrow?

(it's good to have a spare anyway)

I'd first check to see what standard your laptop is, if it's only G then I'd disable N on the router and have it G only, and try another channel.

If it's N I'd see if you can play with the frequency it's using, or the channel, also how far are you from it?

I'm 99% sure it's just the cheapest card you can get really, I'm not expecting anything special.

I'll find out what it is though.
