Since she said she plugs directly into the modem, I'm assuming she does the same for the router meaning wireless related things wouldn't affect her.

If you do in fact use wireless then it can play into effect. QoS(Quality of Service) is a feature that allows you to designate priority of bandwidth to certain applications or services, even specific computers. For example, I have my router set to give my PC the highest priority over anything else that is connected to it, giving me a very very large majority of the bandwidth. This way, my sis doesn't slow down anything I do by watching her shitty music videos. Or the same for my parents watching some yahoo news clip.

Being old could cause your problem if the router is on its way out, though it seems unlikely. Then again, I had a brand new router be absolute ***in speed and wireless range.

Edit: *** I'm slow.

ahem* but you have wireless n capabilities so you should be getting maximum speed with your wireless in default settings,

try setting up a password if you don't have one, and you can also login the router and change the current wireless channel it's on in case you are getting any interference, this happens quite often, basically if somebody (ie; a neighbor) has their wireless router on the same channel as you they could be short changing each other.

to be fair: I didn't know what to get when bought my first router, I just happened to get a great deal as Circuit City placed the wrt54gs in the spot for the wrt54g, and the g was cheaper and on sale that week.

got a $100 router for $60 at the time :D

um, most people's internet doesn't require them to need above G...

I haven't really had any issues with it until about a week ago, so if I have to buy a new one I'm fine with it. I honestly thought for 20 dollars it was only going to last me maybe a year or something.

no but if other people are on her connection it would slow her down considerably, when she plugs directly in, nobody else can be on.

QOS wouldn't be an issue here...

if you don't, there should be a page for current clients, if you're the only one plugged in, it should only have one dhcp client, if you're seeing a bunch, it means other people are on your network (not a good thing, if nothing else because they're using your connection, but they could also sniff packets etc, best to secure it up.

I made the mistake of assuming she had her connection secure. If she doesn't, then that definitely is possible.

I wrote that before I read that she wasn't having issues until recently, etc.

QoS limiting wouldn't just happen out of nowhere.

Under the wireless section try looking for something that says security. If you find it, what is it set to?

Example.

Security Options
None
WPA-PSK [TKIP]
WPA2-PSK [AES]
WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]

Just to be sure, try looking for what Jet said. A DHCP client list. Some routers just call it "Attached Devices", or something similar. If you're the only one, then you don't have to worry about anyone else on (that might have got the password right).
