I started watching anime with my most recent boyfriend. He enjoys it and asked me if I would like to watch some of it. I gave it a chance and never regretted it.
I haven't been watching anime very long but I know for a fact that I've laughed harder watching anime than watching normal tv shows, no dubs just subs. I find it very hard to enjoy a dubbed anime, it's just not meant to be that way really. I will say this though, some dub teams are VERY good at what they do and I actually preferred the dubbed version on some animes vs the original.
Good humor can get across language barriers, if you need to dig deeper than that and actually understand the language and its culture to understand why its funny then it's not for me.
I have a lot of tv shows that I enjoy watching, discovery and food network both have very interesting series while the other major networks I don't bother. If I want to watch Dexter or anything else on a premium network then I just download it in HD and put it up on my TV like I'm watching it normally, w/o wasting my money on that crap.
Tbh I don't watch anime on a daily basis. I only enjoy watching a select few, so I guess I have high standards. I prefer the more "serious" animes though rather than the cutesy ones with squeeky voices. If it doesn't have a good plot, and doesn't absorb me in, I won't watch past episode 1.
By far my favorite so far story wise has been S&W though, so wittingly and economically fun to watch.
I'll give it a try, I'll try any show really if it's good enough.
One thing that really hit me when I started watching this stuff a few years ago was how many amazing stories aren't being told on TV here.
It really makes a lot of our stuff look crappier than it already is. Some of the stories for the shows I've watched are so good I just want to find the translated novel for them and read them all.
For example, SAO is very good imo and has a great mix of different themes that make it very enjoyable for me.
I actually watched W&S (or S&W) and I didn't mind it. It wasn't over the top and the dubbing wasn't terrible.
That's another thing. I know that it's not the voice actor's fault for having to rush through a statement what the character says, but when it's like, "Ohkunikumaka, thattowelisoverthereperhapsweshouldadoptit, huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh?" it's not so fantastic.
There are some really good dubs, not forcing it on you mag just saying.
Dubs are a bit trickier in my opinion. You not only have to sell the show the way it was already presented to a diff audience, but the voice for the character has to be spot on. If I feel the voice isn't right even a little bit I just won't watch it.
It's all about presentation, and these shows weren't made for english so it's a huge challenge. Some can be done easier than others I suppose.
My main source for anime is generally television by itself, and since that's been in decline, I really haven't picked up many outside of it. Every now and again my brother finds a good one, and I watch it with him.

See, and that's the big compromise. A lot of these animes have content that need a little bit of Japanese knowledge, and I have enough problems with my own culture, much less trying to take on the culture from another nation. So a lot of this stuff tends to steamroll me.
Yea, if I have to know something about the japanese culture I'm just not going to get it.
I might find it enjoyable but I won't understand why really lol.
I've seen some very good foreign movies though as well, french, german, etc. Some of them are amazing and shouldn't be passed up because they are amazing pieces of work.
I'm not sure if this really works for this convo, but I am to say the least a big fan of comics, and Akira is my #2 work of graphic storytelling, all. Time. The anime is pretty awesome, but the six volumes of comics are second only to Watchmen.
I used to watch Anime more a couple years ago, but nowadays I don't as much. I still do like it, and there are some series that I've enjoyed, and others I haven't, but I just don't watch them nearly as much now
excuse you all, lets watch the opening of this show and ask ourselves how we could not think this has some sort of greatness in it. I mean, look at the dramatic anime turn-arounds and air-gustys.
the whole f-ing thing is on youtube and in english.
guess what Im doing this weekend.
wow, nostalgia , hard to believe its been almost 10 years since, time flies so fast ;;
This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
