Far too childish/cartoony for my taste. It was the only FF game I didn't play through more than once after beating it (except the abomination that was FF5). The main character was incredibly weak, and the supporting cast weren't very memorable. Also the entire skill learning system was just awful. Not to mention the "excalbur II" thing, which I realize wasn't like mandatory to beat the game, but the game gave you incentive to skip it's story. Real great concept -_-. Also the fact that I saw a video of a level 1 playthrough of one of the final bosses in the game.... really *** dumb.

Really? I've heard the same thing said about many's distaste for WoW, but in reality, it adds a degree of charm and familiarity to the game which made it as successful as it was. Truly a superficial excuse if one at all. And although Zidane's backstory didn't come into full focus until the game was nearly over, there was a plethora of cast members all with their own backdrops, memories, ambitions, fears, and hopes.
I'm surprised you found none of them particularly memorable as many of them were almost literal caricatures for each job class from the older FFs. I'm surprised Vivi's sorrow of not knowing his existence or purpose while plagued with confusion on personas of his likeness being used as lifeless tools of war, or Garnet's ambition of stopping her mother's path of destruction at any cost, but refusal to harm that which she would call family while uncovering her own past and history, or Steiner's overcoming of his own perpetuated fear and paranoia of the Princess' safety and coming to terms that she is her own person and the situation he is in holds more weight than his own sworn oaths, or Freya's melancholy of losing her very own Kingdom and people to the greed of Queen Brahne and simultaneously seeking to return to her long lost love, only to discover that he had forgotten her very significance and existence to him captivating or appealing to your emotions.
Also try not to let optional or hidden easter eggs damper your opinion on the game as a whole. That's kinda silly. The Excalibur 2 thing is really just a kind of challenge mode. Obviously meant for those who have already finished the game initially.
I think my only grievance was that Tetra Master was a very difficult and confusing card game. I kinda wish they just kept Triple Triad and reskined the cards for IX. That woulda been awesome.
But alas, I'm not seeking to change your mind on your own personal validation for how you feel about something. Just kinda surprised you enjoyed XIII so much, while felt so little about IX. A complete contradiction to my own tastes if you will.
On a side note, Segrahams ginger ale and jack makes it almost like drinking straight jack x_x
What you see as charm, some see as childish. One of the reasons I like 14 so much is the adult language/feel it has to it.
I guess the caricature thing didn't tickle your fancy eh?
But to me 13 felt drab and melodramatic. Almost like watching a soap opera where the actors try too hard and come across as total phonies.
Not to mention the all the made up words and over stylized action sequences and appeals to modernized monstrosities was alienating as ***.

The moogle alone assured I would never ever pick up a copy of 13-2.
Which says something because even X-2 was painful to admit purchasing... even for $5 when Game Crazy was closing down permanently.
I felt robbed when I got this beautiful grandiose, melodic and graceful piano intro, only to be introduced to this pop star, pretty princess, dress me up, charlie's angels burlesque ***. The biggest bait and switch betrayal of all time x_x
but hows it been with FFXI so far aynthing new i missed in the past few months?? last i heard was the new expansion there making
Lots of minor content additions not worth mentioning or doing, and minor adjustments that should have been done ages ago. So not really. Probably best to wait til SoA comes out, but I miss bullshitting on bard and campaign too much to wait.

ah ok so does the minor adjustments show or not really? and yeah i cant wait for SoA lol
Eik, don't take anything I say more than a grain of salt.
Like I said earlier, allegory isn't worth arguing over because it's something that can't be argued. So lest our slight differences disgust us from one another, I'll leave it with some comic relief.
You're still a brother from another mother xD

It's no more melodramatic then other FFs, voice acting and better graphics just make it stand out more. If older FFs had the technology to make "over stylized action sequences" they would have had them as well.
Just gunna say while 9 was definetly not my favourite entry and had a kinda goofyer style there wasn't much lack of grit there, genocide everywhere in that game.

I guess that would be the root of the problem for me.
Many of my favorite FFs were old enough to where there was a reasonable margin of imagination to take hold and let your feelings capture everything for you, while with the advancement of graphics and the introduction to voice overs, such imagination was stripped away and left only for face value which I could not help but be displeased with. So it ultimately became one of those "love or hate" things similar to how many movies are because they stand so firmly as their own entity without much headroom for interpretation or imagination.
Another note when Eik mentioned he greatly disliked FFV, reminded me of how my interpretation changed greatly on that game simply by listening to the semi-orchestrated arrangements of the Dear Friends album. Hearing the music under a different light really put emphasis and emotion on what otherwise would have been relatively stoic to many including myself.
Take Leena's theme for example. From the game alone this is a relatively uninteresting scene. Bartz, a wandering soul seeking his purpose in life, stumbles upon Leena's unconscious body, to which they make their awkward salutations and acquaintances given the circumstances of the meteor. But underneath that and as time goes on, Leena becomes a kindred spirit, whose ambitions of finding (and later redeeming) her father empower Bartz and his will, as well as his desire to find what it is he lost and was a part of.
This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
