Had an uncle die from cancer from asbestos exposure for a long period of time about 5 years back. Was my favorite uncle.
In no way am I joking about cancer, I'm joking about the paranoia that everything gives you cancer, apparently.
Don't take it ill-intent when it isn't meant so.
Mine. You never mean ill-intent.

My mother had ovarian cancer, my stepmother had breast cancer, my grandfather had prostate cancer and one of my uncles died from leukemia. It's a very real and scary thing. However, my point is that it's very possible to get it from any number of things at any time, so to state that you might get it because you're around a smoker is basically futile because it's just as possible to get it from something else and therefore using it as a reason to complain about smokers to me is rather ridiculous. It's scary as hell and I honestly don't wish it on anyone, but if we go through life worrying about every little thing then we're missing the damn point.

Well, it's understandable though to have a passionate reaction when it's something that touches you personally, I am the same about other topics.

There is a great difference from getting cancer by freakishly bad luck and having carcinogens blown into your face though...

And that's dependent upon the smoker, which is the second point I was making. A smoker who blows smoke in your face is doing it because he's rude and knows damn well what it will do to you, and those people shouldn't be allowed to have cigarettes in their mouths. But there are people who know how not to be rude, and they can smoke without "having carcinogens blown into" other people's faces.

I don't know what it will do to me, but if I'm on the wrong side of the wind I get it and cough, and I don't like coughing, so I don't like being near smokers too much.
And it smells like burnt dreams and hopes.

Well regardless of it it's blown into your face directly or not. It stagnates the air of where you are. Though that comes down to not having shitty ventilation I guess.

I meant that figuratively as well. Smokers who are mindful of other people will do so outdoors away from others because they're polite, and not smoke around people for this reason.

Fair enough Mag. I think a lot of smokers would still smoke indoors if it was legal in public settings though.

I was looking for that one day (whatever day that was) when we were talking about mental images of what you looked like. That was pretty much what I had in my head.
Unrelated to everything else. Mag would be proud of the guy at work that does our maintenance/cleaning. We were in the break room and some people (including him) were joking around. He pretended to be about to flip a table, and said, "I ain't afraid to flip that table, make a big mess, and then clean it up!"
... Back to lurking other threads and forgetting I found time to post here.

Kinda yeah. I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke, but if someone else wants to do it, their life, their choice, their problem. If they want to quit I'd help, if they were happy doing it then I'd leave them alone. I do things that are bad for me, too, such as drinking. I wouldn't particularly appreciate it if other people gave me issues over it. My life, my problem.
My maternal aunt had breast cancer in her early thirties, my grandmother died from colon cancer, my grandfather had testicular cancer. None of them ever touched a cigarette. Cancer sucks, but it's just not one of those things that is super-duper preventable. Living life in fear isn't even really living, in my opinion. Not to just go play chicken on the railroad tracks or anything, but if you aren't going to do things you enjoy out of dread for the future, what's the point?

This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
