The graphics are not that much improved with the exception of a few 3d scenarios which don't change how the game is played. The cosmetic improvements are consistent with what I would expect from any follow on installment, marginal.
The NPC's are hardly demonstrating impressive AI, it's barely noticeable in difference if at all from previous versions, the only difference is you have a target instead of simply going from gym to gym, when essentially all that target is doing is leading you from gym to gym in a clever misconception that makes you think you are progressing a story.
Chasing down team plasma means being led from gym to gym and fighting team plasma as you go is no different than in previous games going from gym to gym fighting team rocket in between, only that team plasma are given a more prominent role this time but it does not change the pattern of the game.
The story should have ended with the redemption of N and the conquering of the plasma fortress, but instead you go hunting down the seven sages, then once they are found the story just disappears with the police officer, I assume it continues in B/W2 because it was the equivalent of turning a page and finding the rest of the book blank.
Finally, the progression curve was very erratic, it's been a smooth increase in level and difficulty in previous installments. B/W had this sudden leap from fighting level 30ish to level 60ish pokemon with no warning whatsoever. It was like there was a segment of the game missing.
