I'm well passed due for it.. Typically I try to do it once every 6 months or so.. Been damn near a year..

You know, computer starts to slow down and doesn't want to act right, it's easier to just reformat than actually spend the entire day trying to track down the problem(s).

I was gonna wait til I got my new video card and ***and then do it, but.. I finally decided to go back to FFXI for friend and give it a shot.. No point in installing and updating it, then reformatting less than a month later, so I'm doign it now.

Wow every 6 months, lol. You must not be very good with normal maintenance to prevent that sort of thing.

Don't worry, up until Windows XP came out I used to do the same thing just about. Since XP the only time I had to reformat was installing a new motherboard, or hard drive.

Even Windows 98 was notorious for having to reformat. Especially when IE was basically the only option for browsing.

No I'm good with maintenance.. I just hate when my computer isn't running top notch.. I install and uninstall a lot of programs.. Like I said it's been nearly a year now and it's just now to starting to slow down..

It's not like my computer is all locked up and I can't do anything at the moment.. My computer is still running faster than any other computer I've ever been on or my wife's.. But knowing what it's capable of and what it's actually performing at now bugs me..

Yeah I hear you. It's a *** to track down some of those abnormal problems. But for me reformatting and reinstalling everything, also making sure you got everything backed up, ughh I hate that even more.

Yeah that's the part I hate the most.. I keep most all my files on a seperate partition, the only things I really have to track down to make sure they're saved off the partition to be reformatted is like game saves or the random pics/videos that I never ended up putting on my reformat-safe drive.

Last time I had to reformat, was last March, and it was to install the whole new system basically. Luckily I also got a new drive for the main drive so I was able to just pull everything off via usb as needed.

Well I'm not an expert, but yeah I'm responsible for all the computer maintenance, hardware or otherwise, for everyone I know. My hardware stays clean and I don't just download random things..

The next time will be to install windows 7 with an SSD.

I keep saving up for a good one, only to have random financial set backs pop up when I get close.

This last time I was up to about $200 and then a $300 vet bill came up, lol...

Then $350 for X-mas for my mom's laptop.

So yeah... Oh well.

That helps so much. I wish more people were just a bit more careful on what they download or click on. (And then whine when something goes wrong)

I'm hardcore though when it comes to software... When I do a fresh install I spend a good hour or two just sifting through the registry alone manually fixing everything. I don't trust those tweak programs that much, and they often miss stuff.

Looks like temporary install files.

Most likely you can delete those.

I don't install random things, but I don't spend that much time on the registry either lol. It's gonna get screwed up at some point, why not start at go :p

I'm going to have a lot of researching to do when the time comes for Win7, lol.

Registry wise it's not that different from xp, theres a few new entries for things like UAC, a couple things moved around. Essentially though its the same. Dunno why people who use win7 think its substantially different, they're probably the ones who get confused by the changes to the desktop right-click menu.

that type of thing exists temporarily but constantly when files are being moved/rewritten/copied etc or if you were in the middle of installing microsoft office you'd see a crapload of those exist for a second to speed up installations

but right now I'm not installing anything so mine just looks clean and empty lol odd, do you have some errors or installations fail to finish? hmm I may be wrong

Windows updates also can load like that if you're in the middle of some windows update in the background etc
Sometimes they stay if you cancel an install too. They're supposed to be deleted when done, but yeah aborting / failed installed / sometimes just for the hell of it, they stay.

That's good to know. If the structure is about the same, shouldn't be too much then.

chuu if you want to be safe what you can do is put them in the recycle bin. if after a couple weeks nothing is wrong with any of the programs you use regularly you can probably assume that its safe to delete them from there.
