It's actually not that bad if you take care of them right and they're descented. Give them plenty of cloth to lay on, which soaks up some of the oils (that's what smells) and wash it weekly and it cuts down on the smell, then there's also this stuff you can add to their water that helps keep the smell down as well, and a special shampoo that doesn't just strip away all the oils (if the oils are stripped away then they come back stronger than before) that I've been using on a weekly basis. When it gets near bath/cage cleaning day if you get like face to face with them you can easily smell them, but you'd have to have a pretty strong nose to smell them from across the room or something.
Don't feed them any food with fish/seafood in it and their poo doesn't even smell, I clean the litter boxes daily and I'm yet to actually smell it.
It's all about maintenance.
