Don't ever ever ever ever ever sell gold or silver to a pawn shop or JC dealer. They will rip you off so bad. Find a private dealer and work with them.

If you're selling stolen goods, make sure they are cool with it first.

What do you mean by private dealer? I've tried to find private people to sell it to before.. It's like 50g or so (my scale isn't dead accurate, but it's not off by more than a gram or two it's one of those metal scales you buy in headshops to measure 'stuff') of 14k gold, called up the most reputable jeweler and they told me that would get me like 747.. That just kinda sounds kinda low..

You really need time to develop a good trust based relationship to avoid getting ripped off and even then, in the best case scenario, you're getting roughly half current the value....
They gotta make a living

my friend owns a pawn shop, I could place a call if you'd like
By slipispsycho 2011-12-05 12:56:05
According to this the gold is worth about 1,600, and from my Googling everything has said you can expect to get about 50-70% of it's total value when selling, 747 isn't even 50%.
Had made this an edit but I'll make it a second post.
I'm just not sure where to sell it, I expected worse case scenario I'd get about 850-900. 747 is a really specific number, which means she used a calculator of some sort to come to that conclusion.
Is that 'fair'? I'm not looking to get the most I can, I really don't have the patients for that, I tried to sell this thing for months a year or two ago..

Did you try negotiating? They'd have to be kind of stupid to not lowball you in the beginning.
Keep researching, get second opinions. You'll be in a lot better position to get a higher price if you know what it's worth and what others are willing to pay for it.
By slipispsycho 2011-12-05 12:58:38
I plan to take it to a pawnshop just to see what they offer. My problem with negotiating with the jeweler is the specific price, it just makes it sound as if there's no room for negotiation, that it's a set price and that's what I'll get.. I'm also a really horrible negotiator.

Dealers that aren't connected to large companies that own their own metals business. They are the ones who have to stay honest and fair or they won't get business at all.
I buy and sell silver through a guy that owns his own metal trading (and realestate) business. I've seen the amount that pawnshops offer and major companies like Cash4gold and it's a complete ripoff.
You'll never get full value, but finding an honest trader you'll get the most out of it.

The jeweler I called isn't a chain, but it's not like a 'mom and pop shop' either.. It's been in business in this town for damn near 100 years.. The other place is basically just a shack.. I suppose I could try taking it by there and see what they say, maybe ask them if they could go up to what I originally expected.

Always start out higher than you expect, they will always try go get you lower so by starting higher the final price will be closer to what you expect. Unless they have fixed rates then its moot.

about 1,600 X 50% of it's total value when selling, 747 isn't even 50%. ..
747 is 50% of about 1,600
But you should really just give Mr. T his chain back before he pity's you like a fool.

This is where I suck at negotiating, I understand it, but I can't read people, and I can be read easily. If you go too high they're going to know you're just starting high to work your way down, and once they know that they can hardass you into taking even less than you expected to negotiate to. I don't really have a lot of options on where to sell it, I know what the one jeweler is going to give me, I'm going to go to the pawnshop first just to see what they offer but I'm full expecting to be told like 600 or something, then I'll check the other place.

But you should really just give Mr. T his chain back before he pity's you like a fool. The actual value is 1,634, 50% of 1,600 is 800, 50% of 1,634 is 817. That's $70 short.
EDITED three times.. Too tired, need sleep.

Whats with all this math. Make it die. I don't wanna be doing math either, I only got like 3 hours of sleep.
This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
