Then what were the RNGs there for
I always felt like no one understood the point of RNG when they asked me to pull. RNGs don't use low delay weapons, it's generally faster to melee pull, let alone Provoke or Dia.

It depends on the rating system aswell. Take IGN for instance, they just rated Skyrim as 9.5/10. They also rated COD3 9.4, black Ops 8.5, Halo Reach 9.5, they are far too generous with their ratings to be taken seriously. Also, to rate in 0.1s is ridiculous.

wasnt there an issue a year or so back, when someone lost their job for rating a highly anticipated game as bad (and being truthful), and then it showed that some game companies where paying for good reviews?

I'm not sure that the company in question was actually greasing palms to get good reviews, as I don't know about the specific issue in question. However, pretty much any magazine that gives out product reviews has to tread a fine line because a large part of its costs are likely funded by the advertisements placed in the magazine by the companies who make the products they're reviewing. If a company doesn't like the reviews they're getting, they may pull their ads and thus the magazine loses money.

They admitted to Skyrim being buggy in places, and the bugs were exploration related, like mammoths falling out the sky and being able to fall down mountains without using pathways. I'm sorry but no game that has those kind of bugs deserves over 9/10. Although, if an exception was to be made, then Skyrim would be the one because it does look incredible.
Call of duty, 9.4, are they having a laugh. Good game? Yes. Worthy of 9.4/10? Not a hope in hell.
Halo Reach, brilliant. I'm a huge Halo fan, but I don't think it deserves a 9.5/10.
To rate a game anything over 9/10 is to say it's close to perfection.

found something Jeff “GameSpot” Gertsmann was the head of GameSpot editorial staff. He was pretty much the chubby cheek face of GameSpot — and that’s not really a bad thing. He is a great guy with a very likable personality and knows hell of a lot about games. He’s been with GS for more than 10 years and got sacked after writing a bad review.
Although I don’t really agree with his review, he gave the game Kane & Lynch a score of 6.5 out of 10. That’s a medicore game in his opinion. And you know what? Next day after putting the review Live, Jeff finds himself locked out of his office and asked to leave the premises. You could tell that GameSpot had a great deal with K&L’s publisher Eidos, as the site was filled with ads. And Jeff just did his job saying his opinion on the game — that’s what a critic does.
After getting sacked, thousands of topics on various boards arised, thousands of people started canceling their paid subscriptions from GS and are bashing the site altogether.
One of the editor’s at GameSpot came online at Kotaku and gave an anom interview. He/she said that the whole staff didn’t get any explanation at all and the management avoids direct answers to their concerns. More than that, Jeff’s review was removed from GameSpot, meaning that Cnet (owner’s of GS) want to cover it up as if it never happened. Ten freackin’ years at the worlds largest games site and you get sacked. The G-Man — that’s what people call Jeff — is probably the most known game critic in the business. I’m sure he’ll find another job and will do well, but this further shatters my trust to GS.
A big SCREW YOU to the people responsible for the sacking. And a big middle finger to the marketing people of Eidos — if you can’t accept criticism, then you probably shouldn’t be in this business.

To rate a game anything over 9/10 is to say it's close to perfection. I have to agree with this. Not only are those 8-9s up there on the big titles too much, if you look at some of the smaller name games (and have played and have an understanding of those games you can easily tell) that they havn't played more then 2-3 hours of the game if that, then slap a 6-7 on it with the od 4-5. I've even seen them call out a game on bugs when it wasn't a bug but just a lack of understanding on their part.

All reviews are subjective obviously. Top-end heavy reviewing is done mainly for the psychological effect; if you were to rebalance things such that 50% was actually the mean average, people would stop buying the lower games. It's silly, but it also makes sense at the same time.

It wouldn't surprise me if there were under the table deals from publishers and game reviewers to put things under the light they want it to be for the sake of sales more so than what it actually deserves from a general public perspective.

Quote: Despite IGN scoring God Hand a poor 3.0 out of 10 during its original release, the website ranked the game at #100 for their "Top 100 PlayStation 2 Games" list in 2010. It should be noted that the person at IGN who reviewed God Hand, Chris Roper, admitted on his blog that he based his entire review on playing only 1 level of the game, after seeing fan backlash regarding his review.

Not even a 10/10 rating would mean perfection. It's all relative within the gaming industry's standards. There's no such thing as a perfect video game in a world where there's no such thing as a perfect anything. A 10/10 for a game would mean it's the best games have to offer at the time.

Actually, that brings up a good point.
There were no imperfections in Pong. That would mean yes, it is the perfect game.
Does that make it a 10/10? Not even close.

Game ratings are very subjective depending on the person who is doing the review, while one person could say it's the best game on the universe... the other person could say that's it's the worst stinking pile of ***he has ever played.
Getting to the point, the reviews and ratings should all be dependent on the actual players and not some snot nosed idiot who doesn't know jack ***about video games.
By Artemicion 2011-11-10 12:23:11
If anything, faults in a game given they're not defeating the purpose of playing, let alone enjoying the game bring about their own charm or sense of appreciation and respect for the game as a whole.
Even if things were fixed or patched up, it may just be in a sense too perfect.
I hope this isn't crazy talk to some of you.

I'd say Pong is a 10/10
cuz it sure kept me busy when I was a kid.. for hours and hours.
Same with Pac Man and all those old arcade games.

^(@Arte)Completely agree. To a point.
Some glitchiness in a game is a sort of metagame fun. Take Fallout for example. Loads of bugs, but that added a lot of fun to it as well.
Then there's game-breaking bugs, which suck. Game froze after a certain boss in FF9, wasn't able to finish it until about two years ago.

I exited the water plant thingy in Megaton and the sheriff just dropped down from the sky and died >_> It was kinda hilarious but still a bit annoying.

You're not making much sense... to rate a game 10/10 is to say it's flawless, otherwise it would not achieve the maximum score available from the rating system. That is the whole point of having a rating and not just saying good or bad game.

This is assuming of course that the person or team doing the review are being subjective regarding the elements on which the games are rated and not rating on what they like and do not like.
Opinions have no place in industry reviews.

Oh geez.
This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
