There are two things that draw me to the idea of a private server:
1. I don't really like the scale of retail. I'm not a huge fan of watching my character attack 10 times per second, flailing like a WoW character. It takes me out of the experience visually. Item Level equipment also frustrates me with how overloaded they are and how hard they are to read and compare between one another.
2. It sucks that so much content from levels 1 to 118 were made pretty much irrelevant. I'm not just talking about endgame, either. I kinda liked just doing a mundane quest and feeling overjoyed with a 200 gil reward. I liked being excited for that new piece of gear, or that new scroll, or that next level job ability. On retail you can ignore all of it, have Valaineral one-shot hordes of enemies for an hour and you're level 99 even if you have no equipment or combat skills. Players might as well just start at level 99, because that's when the game begins anyway.
But otherwise, yeah, there's no reason to need to take a time machine all the way back to 2004. Even if the game's developers would make a boo-boo, they've fixed it in a roundabout way. If you don't like that EXP parties aren't a thing, there's CP/EP parties. If you don't like that CoP fights aren't level capped anymore, you can still experience that challenge with HTBFs, and so on.

They have that now via job points and master level. Job points you work towards like traditional leveling and you get new spells and bonuses. Its all the same systems but swapped for bigger numbers. 1-99 is no longer the standard leveling experience, its 99 to job master, to then master levels.

tuned in to horizon for 5 min to see someone with equipviewer and ffxidb map with who knows what else running, had to laugh.
Non game mechanic altering stuff is fair game.
Mini map "should" be part of the default game. Equip viewer (while useless until 75) "should" be part of the default game. Tparty, distance, mob health, etcetcetc all standard stuff that should've been there to begin with.
They don't allow gearswap (though I highly doubt they'd enforce it) Gearswap has minimal usage at 75. You really wouldn't even notice (as long as you used it as "intended" and not as a bot)

I was shocked to hear they permitted Allmaps until I heard it couldn't be detected because it's completely client-side.
Though when I was playing around on a new character I made on Bahamut, I realized how little I even needed maps anymore. Most of the game is just burned into the back of my brain at this point. I didn't notice I didn't have any maps until I was trying to unlock my mount, which requires you to have the map of Jeuno and its surrounding zones.

Are you confident to run through any Jungle area that begins with Y without a map?

Honestly, I think those maps are more of a hindrance than any kind of help. You follow them thinking the path is obvious, and then you're stuck at a dead-end for the 50th time.
And I've only ever had to trudge through Yorcia the one time to get the warp points, so I wouldn't be confident enough in that place with or without a map lol
I'm not sure how much time was spent in that zone back when Seekers of Adoulin was new, but I wasn't there for that.

I cant find my way to toilet without a map As a bonus, you can give the map another use if someone forgot to change the toilet paper roll!

I can make it from Kaz to Yhoat, kaz to norg, yhoat start to telepoint/ugly/ifrit's without a map, and I haven't done it since 2007.
It is eternally seared it. Those 2 maps are *** useless.
I couldn't navigate Yorcia if my life depended on it though.

Does anyone know if Make FF Beautiful will have a new 2023 release, or does 2022 seem worth installing now.

I mean, whats the point reaching the peak of your strength when there is no more opponents to fight? I That's why I can't do endgame in MMOs. It doesn't feel to me like progress because it's all the same stuff, but it's made slightly easier because you've grinded that stuff so much that its rewards made it stronger... so you can grind that stuff faster. It just accelerates an endless cycle.
Better get that Nyame gear so I can... get more Nyame gear even faster.

Well in MMO it makes more sense because you can sit in town and show it off at least, and things are easier to clear so you can help your friends do it later on too.

It also does have the effect of allowing the developers to make tougher content that is virtually impossible to beat without the previous gear. I get it, progress does exist.
I just don't really get the same kick out of it as other folks do, I guess. But that's a 'me' problem. I'll continue messing around with low-level stuff, joining linkshell events and pick-up groups as I see fit. Or just try and claim the entire Mindartia continent by myself in Shadowreign if I get the urge.
Honestly, FFXI just has so much stuff to do I can never really get bored of it, even without dedicating myself to endgame.

Oof. A friend of mine just rage-quit HorizonXI.
They've been complaining for a while that there's no way for a White Mage from Windurst to earn money. Apparently all mobs up to level 4 or so give no drops at all, and up to level 10 or so are severely reduced.
Cornettes, Calculi, and other items that would drop regularly on any other server (retail or otherwise) are lucky to be a 1-in-20 drop, 2-leaf Mandy Buds are tagged Rare, and drops such as Silk Thread are nonexistent in the starting zones. They had to create a mule in Bastok and send Rusty Buckets by the box-full just to earn a few scrolls. And because the devs increased vendor prices (including spell scrolls), buying a single spell was taking like 4-6 hours.
Meanwhile, the economy started inflating because martial jobs in Bastok and San d'Oria had no issues making money, and it was already to the point where Valkurm-level items were costing upwards of 5k gil on the Auction House. And if you weren't already in Jeuno, the taxes in the main cities and their surrounding zones is brutal.
They have to reset zones almost hourly because enemies are set to walk back to zone and the trains of non-despawning enemies make them unplayable. Sometimes they don't even notify players they're about to do it, and a lot of players are logging in dead because they were just kicked off in the middle of a fight.

While that is absolutely highlarious. it sounds like they're not a super competent player.
yes, the learning curve is STEEP on a private server, but there are some universal truths you should pick up on and instead of fighting with it, you move the *** on. Drop rates are ***, you leave. You abandon whm. It's the first day and they couldn't hack it? Well christ.
WHM doesn't need *** all. You go naked to dunes and you get cure for free. You're good to go. But on top of that, you never start whm when the whole game starts. You can't do ***. WHM is the worst possible server start job.

1 in 20 sounds about right to me whats the problem
I think people forget how long it took to make a stack of beehive chips or silk thread back in the day. There's a reason that ***went for 20-60k a stack.

Yeah. I tried starting Red Mage on my Bahamut character with no existing characters there and wow was that a mistake. Even with Records of Eminence, Sparks, and things like Fields of Valor that job needs like half a million gil from level 1 thru 50 with spells alone. Not to mention all the skill-ups >_<
Most of the time I start Thief. Treasure Hunter is always useful, picking locks is always useful, bolts have so much utility, and Sneak Attack is a ton of fun to play with. I just wish that you could get the Lv.1 crossbow on Thief. Sucks you have to wait until Lv.10, and by then it's hard to catch up Marksmanship Skill...
And if I'm starting in Bastok, the Fetichism quest takes forever without Treasure Hunter.

This team (led by the legendary Harry Partidge) made such a great parody of horror games during the 5th console generation.
The sound effect of the CD screeching during the loading screens completely sold me on the experience <3
This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
