It was the first shooter to really nail a cover mechanic, something that's been used in almost alllll recent third-person shooters nowadays, same system they used in GoW and everything.
It also introduced Horde mode, a co-operative mode that's you and three friends vs waves of enemies. It's been recreated in Treyarch CoD games as Zombies, MW3 as Survival, Halo ODST and Reach as Firefight...
It had an intelligent reloading mechanic where if you had good timing, you could reload faster and get a temporary damage boost to your bullets for a few seconds. Used in a few recent games, none of which are coming to mind atm >.>
Many games have had cover mechanics (mostly third person games... MGS1 comes to mind back in like 2000).. maybe they did it WELL, but it wasn't revolutionary by what you're describing.. The quick load, i'll give you, though that mechanic sounds kinda lame... dmg boost cuz you can spam a reload button? thats what it sounds like... idk... And the waves of enemies thing... I wouldn't call that revolutionary either >_<. I'm trying to think of a game that has had that in the past... I guess you could say every dynasty warrior game...They have droves and droves of endless enemies until you actually clear your objective. /shrug idk mate
The cover system in GOW cannot be compared with MGS, they are two completely different types of game.
As far as the reload button goes, it's the complete opposite of spamming. Spamming the reload button will lock the gun and result in you becoming overrun by enemies. It requires timing to get it right, which in turn requires skill when you are trying to reload in the middle of many epic firefights.

And in addition, I would definitely not compare Horde mode at all to Dynasty Warriors, or really anything else you have in mind. It's the subtle differences that make games and game modes great, And Horde mode really nailed everything you need to make the game type fun. If you played it, you'd understand. It's much more fun than it sounds, especially with three friends.
Whitest Kids always deserve +s. You should check out that show, Et!
Yeah actually I saw the pilot episode the day it aired, I was kind of already there before everyone else was but then I almost immediately lost interest also.
It's a game called Bastion made from some indie development team.
Coolest part of it is the omnipresent narration that follows your own gameplay. It's very tasteful and surprisingly doesn't get annoying or repetitive.

standing behind a box so i dont get shot... im sorry it really is as simple as that.. /shrug. not trying to sound like a total douche, its just..cover isn't a very complicated matter (unless we're talking about idiot plds in XI lol).. and ok i get the reload thing..but you could just wait til you hit 0 bullets and hit your reload button, nothing crazy difficult about that i guess lol (though gun locking is kinda neat if you keep hitting the button..do kinda like that now that it was actually explained lol)
but my neo-ni folks (yes..this thead is ni part 3...why you let ni die!??? lol) its time for work, i'll backread when i get home.

so did I and I've watched every sketch repeatedly since then
I think you could download it on the PSN or XBL, or even on Steam for PC. It's one of those indie downloadable games I think.
But I need to look into it first.

You're really not getting this at all >_>; I suggest you play at least a demo of the game or you won't be able to understand our viewpoints.

Again, both of those are things you need to see in motion. Controls are a huge part of a game, and that goes double for cover. Most games with cover in the past have had it too magnetic where it's hard to get off the wall you're against, or just not efficient enough to do, but everything in Gears was nailed perfectly.
And the reload is an exercise in precision and calmness. If you're getting shot by two guys at once, and just barely safe in your cover, your fingers are going to be twitching and you'll mess up the timing.
For certain guns, for instance the sniper rifle, it is almost essential. Sniper rifles are only one-shot kill to the head if you don't active-reload, and it's one shot kill to the body too if you do active reload. The tradeoff is that it's much harder to hit an Active reload on a Sniper Rifle than on any other gun.
This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
