Random Thoughts.....What are you thinking?
By RadialArcana 2022-11-08 03:07:26
Quote: How many actual people play XI today? How many accounts / player on the average? Are there any actual social interactions anymore?
XI doesn't bring in a lot of $. It does bring in some. It gets some support. Should they make it more visible? OH **** YES. If they did it might bring in a few more $. But if it did would it get more support?
It does have a lot of players, not XIV or WOW lot of players but it's still a well populated mmorpg compared to the majority of the market. For instance, EvE, Star Trek LOTR, GW2 etc and they are all paying here instead of many free players on these others. Most f2p games are kept alive with a couple hundred whales and a few thousand free players.
It's also useful for PR reasons towards XIV, a lot of the PR surrounding XIV is to make it out to be much bigger than it actually is because human nature is to flock around popular things.
b4 someone goes off, I'm not saying it's not one of the biggest mmorpgs. I'm saying they make it out to be way bigger than it is because it works to pull people to popular.
XI and XIV effectively help each other for different reasons, XI gets lowered costs and stability and XIV gets to add 100k+ "players" to their PR and also gets to add a profitable side mmorpg to their main franchise.
It's effectively like WoW and WoW classic, except instead of giving classic away for free they get money from it.
It's smart buisness.

Are there any social interactions anymore? For as much as people say they want XI to be more social these days, the only way you're getting it consistently is to go to a high pop server, unless you're already in a long time XI committed friend group. Even then, if you're unwilling to get to max ilvl right away on a job you probably don't want to play, then you can't really come to events. When people are on XI, they don't really seem interested in chatting even though it's slow enough and there's wait times for stuff like Odyssey.
Probably because most know that they will just quit again, so why bother conversing? To be honest, its something happening in all MMOs. XIV has it the same too, people barely talk there either. You're more likely to encounter more talkative people given the population size, so that makes sense.
I did XI for over a decade. I loved it.
Today's XI is neither the game I signed up for nor the game I left.
Todays XI is exactly like it was during 75 era,
Nah, it's not really. Like sure, it's comparable. It is the same game engine, and a ton of the same concepts still apply.
However, with Trusts, RoE, and iLvl, progression through today's XI is tumultuous at best (unless you already know what you're doing).
Yeah, as someone that has been playing almost nonstop since day1 NA, it really is the same. It just kept up with todays pace of gaming... Most of those adjustments were necessary given the population and average day gamers. To me it still feels the exact same, except most of the playerbase that was around became jaded and left from update to update. If we still had the same playerbase people would be having linkshells and weekly schedules like the old days of events, but as games age it loses players.
Quote: I think it says a lot about it that attaining level 99 is seen as a basic / intro RoE objective. There's so many EXP systems in XI, even just leveling is no longer straight forward.
For like half the jobs too, job specific merits are now seen as something you should change on a whim on a per NM basis to have the best advantage you can get.
The switching merit things is not required for almost anything, I've never even done that as often.
Quote: Since REMA are easy to make/grandfathered at this point, anyone new to the game is also contending with that point of progression when they do hit 99, in addition to Merits, JP, and eventually EP. But since the old salts generally don't have every REMA, the old salts are still competing against any new blood that shows up. Whereas back in 75 days, competition was still fierce, but you didn't have to have one to be considered putting in maximum effort for your job.
Still dont, there are options right off the AH that are sometimes better than REMA... or Naegling that comes from ambuscade and beats out a lot of REMA. Its not required for almost anything except maybe some highest tier Odyssey. The same progression that was there, is still there. There are so many ways to gear up to become competent at end game without requiring REMA. I will say that job points are the baseline but that can be compared to back in the day getting to level 75. The new Level 75 is job mastered and it still takes less time to achieve than it did.
Quote: In 75 era, skill gain rate was faster than leveling for almost everything. Now it's reversed, so much so that you hit 99 without even being closed to capped skills, and need to eat skill up food for a good long while / find the exploits to skill up faster/better / buy the Sparks skill up books.
Uhhh this is a non issue... You can cap skills literally AFK with trusts and auto attacking something. There are items to use to skill up with, there are foods and campaigns are regularly in effect. It's way faster than it ever was before.
Quote: 75 era also didn't have iLvl disparity. In today's XI, once you are at 99, there was very very very few pieces of gear that are pre-ilvl that are good for you to incorporate into a set of any kind. In 75 era, some of the earliest NM drops still held water at the maximum level. Stuff like O. Kotes on Monk, Fuma Kyahan on Nin, Eurytos Bow on RNG( you know a level 55 bow better than almost all 75 options), and I could list more.
This isn't true at all, we still use accessories from 75 cap all the way thru abyssea to current end game... There are always older pieces that are still in use in obscure builds. Not that long ago I had to run a mule thru Limbus to get the stoneskin pants. There are random items from those BCNMs in the beastmen strongholds in the past that give stoneskin mufflers and some other obscure item that improved shield bash. Tons of examples like that... So I don't see what you mean. Also why does any of that matter? So its nothing like it was in 75 era because old 15+ yr gear is outdated? This is the exact mindset that gives people that title of nostalgia goggles imo. Progression is healthy for any MMO, or it stagnates. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial_(Freud)

It's too bad that so many of the good damaging Blue Magic spells are linked to things like Elementals and other monsters that have no affinity with Monster Correlation. I was thinking about messing around with the group-1 merits and Assimilator's Keffiyeh (mine's +1, soon to be +2) and seeing how noticeable the ~10% increased damage could be. But then I was crafting scenarios in my head and realizing that Spectral Floe, Tenebral Crush, even Entomb - those are all learned from Elementals. You could theoretically use Subduction against Undead, but you'd probably be better off using something like Blinding Fulgor because the bonus from using light-based magic is greater anyway.

Im starting to get used to people that simply neglect a project for half year, just to demand me to prioritize it because there is only one month before their deadline My favourite is when they give a whole new set of instructions a week before it's due for permit and say "DO THIS NOW. IT'S YOUR TOP PRIORITY" and I'm like... no? I'm already three weeks behind on other stuff and I can't just make everyone else late to put yours on top. If you give me new plans, I consider it a new quote, therefore it goes after everything older than it lol

I really hate the youtube algorithm, watch one video and it will seed your recommended with it forever after. At least we have the 3 dots now I guess, not that most know how to use them.
Even if you watch a video hating on something, it does not make any difference to the youtube algo. It will still feed you videos about that thing both positive and negnative, I watched a video complaining about overwatch a while ago and I got overwatch videos out the wazzoo till I used the dots.

I'm honestly shocked they are even doing merch... The bring arts Shantotto and Chocobo really floored me, and they came out so good too. I'll prolly get all of them except the watch, cuz I'll end up getting it scratched up.
I had to go on a hunt for those uniqlo shirts while I was in London just for the XI shirt. It ended up being really rough and not very comfortable for a lounging in the house shirt... The black dye on some of those merch shirts are so uncomfortable too.

Apparently a new XI p server going up, and that guy Nynja liked and commented on it. So sad he keeps supporting crap instead of retail. These servers just hurt the game more and more in the end. No real fans in my opinion

If you're a fan of Doom / Eternal read this:
https://medium.com/@mickgordon/my-full-statement-regarding-doom-eternal-5f98266b27ce#6fef
They did Mick Gordon super dirty and he won't be working with them again. What an awful company they turned out to be, it's outrageous reading if you're a fan of the music.
They refused to pay him for upto a year, rejected lots of his work and didn't pay for it when they did, accepted awards that were meant for him and never gave them to him lol

Would you have a look at that, they are working on the "Official" tags to add verification for real accounts just like they said they would. Almost like all the people whining and crying rivers didn't *** read.
This was all to wipe the slate clean and remove the *** of the previous management. We'll see if Musk actually runs ***into the ground when he actually runs it into the ground.

Yeah that was a quick failure. It's a stupid idea. I guess I will give him credit for realizing it wasn't working five minutes later. But maybe just leave the verification system the way it is.

I think it would be great if people could analyze the Twitter fiasco without letting their personal feelings about Musk influence their opinion one way or another.
Twitter was a mess. It's still a mess. Whether Musk's plans hasten its demise or not remains to be seen, but maintaining the status quo was never the solution.

Dont look at my comments if you might get triggered, but surely they will delete them all quickly. Even though I trade barbs with you here occasionally, I completely agree about Private servers.
Like it's neat that they exist, but I don't understand why people think it's really an accurate portrayal of the old days. It's just as different as the new adjustments to stuff like TP.
Always hear horror stories in addition to all the praise they get. Like they scale back movement speed too much, or flat out get spell damage calcs wrong.
They also do job adjustments with their own ideas... which I imagine favors certain jobs more than others.
I mean, I understand the sentiment about not wanting Trusts and wanting to have to group in more of the content, but it's like... these people quit when Abyssea happened... long before Trusts... for the most part. They could still make friends if they'd just come back to retail, and tried to you know, reach out and make friends. Self fulfilling prophecies and what not

It's fun, for like 5 minutes, really. Then it's horsedick.
Not enough people and if you don't get in on day zero to grind with them you may as well not even bother.
Next private server, just start everyone at 75, only people who already did it are ever going to join anyway, skip the ***, we've all done it, that way you solve half the problem.
By Draylo 2022-11-10 03:42:08
They are the gatekeeping weirdos, they want that EXP grind. They think it "builds character", while the rest of us in 2022 have lives and dont need to waste time hitting a crab for 10m a fight. They want trusts deleted and any modern convenience done away wtih.
They are also hypocritical, almost always have literally two PLs sitting outside the damn party. It just boggles my mind, we have the biggest grind for EXP that FFXI has ever seen in Master Levels and these dummies are nowhere to be found. SE keep catering to them and they dont even know whats going on in retail because they keep arguing with me as if we are still in Abyssea.

In my opinion, even if some of them prefer the old style type of playing, for many it is just an excuse to not pay for playing.
If they would really love the slow grind in parties, why would some of the private servers have higher exp gain from killed mobs compared to the 75 eras in official servers?

One of the most popular servers out there right now is CatsEyeXI, and its entire concept is how comically easy everything is: Trusts, Mounts, higher EXP gains, Home Point warps, and the cherry on top is getting completed Relic weapons for free at certain milestones.
Retail has done a great job of preserving virtually everything from its history, even if it's had to do it in a roundabout way. You want to experience the challenges of CoP as they were when the fights were capped? HTBF. You want to play with other people? Trusts are useless in anything beyond item level 119, so have at 'er. You want that old-school EXP party grind? Master Levels. You want old-school Dynamis? Dyna-D.
My only defense for private servers is I like the idea of older content being meaningful: The thrill of finding an unclaimed NM, the joy of a 200 gil reward from a quest, level 1 to 99 armor having any use at all. And I'm still not used to watching my character flail her sword 80 times per second like she's having a seizure, and trying to compare stats on two Item Level 119 pieces of gear is a real headache. But whatever, I've learned to live with that.

I think the one reason I would play the 75 era p. Server would just be for the slower pacing of fights and the MP management aspect for WHM. Don't really have that anymore on retail servers anymore, sadly.
I liked being able to gauge hMP ticks in EXP or Dyna parties and being able to keep up with the pacing of the group while maintaining sufficient MP to keep the party rolling forward. Yeah, it's archaic but I did enjoy the nuance that presented in the overall gameplay as a WHM.
And fights nowadays are kind of hecticly paced with the amount haste and multi attack available.

Yeah. If they ever did remaster XI, the only gameplay change I'd want to see is them scaling the numbers to values closer to the 75~99 era for pacing, balancing, and simplicity.
Because it's so easy to hit rigid ceilings on so many stats now, it's sort of homogenized a few things.
I tried doing Dyna-D the other day for the first time, and by the time I'd draw my sword the monster would already be dead. The only time I was allowed to have any fun at all was when we'd gang up on a boss.

This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
