Random Thoughts.....What Are You Thinking?

Yeah....that's kind of the direction I was expecting when I first responded, because there is a lot of truth there. But is it really our "true nature" being revealed by social media? I see it more than social media and the construct it gave us allows humans to ignore our own survival instincts of community and safety in numbers.

It convinces us that either we're obviously right in our opinions because now we can find that one other wackaloon who thinks that all froot loops have different flavors and aren't just colored differently.

It allows us to "have our own truth" rather than appreciating the concept of Truth.

It allows us to "have our own facts" because it distorts normal discourse and debate by limiting both our audiences and our information.

None of these things naturally happen without that construct of social media, so I find it hard to believe this is our true natural state.

I still think one of the funniest things I've seen is because it's human nature to argue when questioned, a guy posted random statements on Twitter, just to trigger people. Didn't even take a side, just posted generic statements to watch people lose their minds.

ie: "You're wrong about the wage gap"

No side taken. No saying which side is wrong. Whether there is a gap, or whether there isn't. Just a "you're wrong" to watch people go bananas

I don't think people are "extra mean" on the internet because we're anonymous, I think it's because everyone wants to be heard and they aren't receiving the immediate feedback to know if they are or not. And then it's made worse because text alone doesn't bring with it the information to interpret context or emotion.

Then social media magnifies that yet again because the argument is public, and the human animal tends to hate being judged negatively so we want to "win" that argument. That leaves us both arguing literally forever with people we disagree with, and finding sources of confirmation bias by gravitating towards people we already agree with.

People aren't (all) jerks with masks on in real life, we're just not mentally capable of handling social media.

To become society humans repressed themselves. Concession for cohesion.

Lack of repercussion invalidates that agreement. It's a peek behind the curtains.

Also it isn't just Tesla, Twitter will be mortgaged to the hilt in the buyout and its price is down too.

But isn't that repression by choice more of an indicator of our humanity than our base instincts, and what separates us from the beasts, if you will?

By the way, I'm specifically replying to your comments because I do truly enjoy the conversation and the topic, not simply to disagree. Hope that's been clear.

It's an attempt to surpass their base instincts. But it doesn't overwrite or eliminate them.

They just get buried, looking for any chance to burst out, and social media provides the seams.

I wish learning irl was like in Matrix: you choose the program and it downloads in your brain instantaneously.

Because everytime there is a promotion on Udemy, i always buy a new course that i think interesting at that time. Atm i got 107 courses but just completed a handful of them.

I wish learning them was as easy as buying them.

That'd be really cool. There are a ton of things I want to learn. Imagine how that would skyrocket a sapient species.

In a timeline other than this capitalist hellscape, where there are more than one single goal in life, yeah, it'd be neat.

I mean, I assume it would be by choice. I'm not suggesting we all just hook up to the Wi-Fi and download the internet in our brains so much as go to a school and pay $50 for someone to download Japanese into your brain.

How cool would it be if everyone on the planet could understand and communicate in any/every language, have the know-how to fix their own car, etc.

It seems Orkut is back.

This brings me back some memories. I was never a heavy user of it, but i remember Orkut plus those chat messengers/sites being the “social media” at that time.

I guess at that time the internet wasnt that much “controlled”. Im not sure how Orkut would perform in an environment with instagrams, facebooks and other competitiors

The internet started out as an explosion of web sites, and then it settled into like 10. It's sad. I miss the days where people would get excited about stuff like Homestar Runner and Newgrounds, or some new site would pop up with fun stuff to do.

I think part of the reason it's so nostalgic too is that it was so much fun for such a short amount of time. It really was only for a few years, and now the internet is nothing but like 10 sites wherein everyone shares screenshots from the other sites.

For the first time I bought a new laptop rather than a refurbished one.

It came with a damaged touchpad.

While getting a RMA I was informed that damage might not be covered by the warranty....

Asus Tuf gaming laptop. Asus sucks. Decent customer service call otherwise.

Thats too bad.

But honestly, i dont really like the touchpad so thats not an irrecoverable loss imo.

It makes no sense to me that you would even need a warranty for a new item that was shipped to you damaged. That should be covered by a common-sense return policy.

I've seen some pretty awful policies in the past. :/

Those UTxFF shirts are heinous. Every one of those designs looks like something I could have photoshopped myself in about 10 minutes.

Some seem like cool sleep wear and only 10 dollars but they all look sold out. Can't understand any of the text

Today I learned that the designs of fonts are not copyrighted. And as long as you aren't selling the font file itself, you can use virtually any font in a logo design or whatever. Which is really cool because I wanted to come up with a logo for my game engine, but wasn't sure what my limitations were, and I didn't want to spend north of $250 for a professional to do it for me when I'm not doing this for profit lol...
