I'll have to see it still, I never ever trust reviews. Every single time the reviews say "its bad!" I end up watching it later and it seemed ok. I just watched "Dr. Sleep" and I remember the reviews trashing it when it came out but it was enjoyable for me.
I try to find reviewers that I tend to agree with. You're right that most critics out there, like anyone, are going to have vastly different opinions. But if you find someone who shares similar taste, it's usually a good start.
I've started looking for key words and key phrases within reviews. So even if they speak positively on something, but it's the kind of thing I dislike, I'll know to avoid it, and vice-versa. I was turned off of ever wanting to try Triangle Strategy because I read a review which said something akin to "The story sucks, but at least it isn't bogged down with menus and customization like other games in the genre".
