They just banned the fans from the Olympics, that's going to be a mess. The Olympics are usually awesome, but this year they probably shouldn't even be happening.

Too much cash from sponsorship on it.

They need to show those brands. Last i heard, its about billions.

It's never not about the money

Sponsors are cancelling promotional events too. The Japanese are basically saying no gatherings of any kind.

On one hand I feel kinda bad because you spend all that time, money, and effort to set it all up, and then you can't make any of it back.

On the other hand, it's not like this pandemic only just now started. They've had lots of time to stall, and I'm pretty sure a lot of other countries have been telling them to wait it out.

On the other-other hand, I feel bad for the kids who have been working hard at making it into the Olympics and would hate to see them unable to compete because they had to delay.

Its already delayed one year.

Delaying another one would surely just entirely cancel it to avoid having olympics almost back to back.

I guess this year is the only one japan has to make it happen.

Hosting the Olympics ALWAYS looses money. This one will lose more than most is all.

Host cities and countries try to balance the books by looking at the "value" of the sports palaces built for the event but mostly they are underused afterward to the point that some are abandoned and rot before a decade is out.

American promoters wanted to make a bid for 2020 but they couldn't find a city willing to bear the expense. Ditto 2024.

Already postponed from 2020, and TV doesn't want the Summer and Winter Olympics in the same year, as history showed that Winter Olympics viewing numbers improved by separating them from the Summer Games...let's face it there's a lot more sports the average American will watch in the Summer Games vs the Winter, and those American eyes and wallets are what matters to those broadcasting the Olympics.

So Japan gets the super short end of things...and what they end up losing could result in permanent changes to how we handle these Games in the future. The 2014 Sochi games resulted in the most expensive Winter Games in history and left Russia with essentially an abandoned city. The logic behind having a nation spend billions on a 2 week event and calling it a "gift" to host is beyond me.

The Olympics should always be in Los Angeles or New York, two cities that don't have to build any new venues. The alternative is keep crying about how China keeps getting them.

..keeps getting them? They had 1, in 2008. And that iconic Bird's Nest Stadium? Equally abandoned and surrounded by trash these days.

There are pictures from like 2010 showing it already in disrepair.

It is actually DISGUSTING how much money goes into building a brand new arena every single time and how it goes completely unused after. Literal monuments to human waste and greed.

2022 winter games are China. And they are bidding for another one.

Which is why they should always be in LA or New York, the stadiums are already built. 2028 is in LA, they are using the glitzy Rams stadium as the main venue.

Greenland? Siberia? Antarctica?

Granted, Antarctica just hit like 18 degrees Celsius the other day. Isn't it supposed to be winter in the southern hemisphere? lol

New York City. They have plenty of ski resorts throughout the state.

Regarding permanent locales for Olympics....not a big fan of that honestly. We need to just stop billing The Olympics as being more than it should be- a sporting competition to encourage peaceful relationships between nations. NOT what it has turned into- a referendum on a nation's greatness based upon pyrotechnics and stadium architecture.
