Square Enix's cloud-based gaming service Shinra Technologies is being shut down, with the company suffering an "extraordinary loss" of 2.2 billion yen.
According Square's announcement, Shinra Technologies Japan and its New York branch are being dissolved. Liquidation of the New York and Tokyo divisions are estimated to be complete by March 31, 2019 and June 30, 2016, respectively.
Shinra Technologies "has been trying to raise funds necessary for further business operations from third party investors," Square Enix said in its official statement. Unfortunately, however, the company was unable to find "prospective investors," and as such has decided to close the business.
Square Enix unveiled its ambitious cloud gaming venture in 2014, with former Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada leading the business. The goal was to provide new gaming experiences through a cloud-based ecosystem that would allow developers to create constantly evolving virtual worlds.
