Well if it's for an item page it's legit.
I wouldn't encourage popularity contests.
I thought it was horrible then and still do now. yay badges!
let's vote for badges! I don't think we should just pile up a bunch cause people want shinies.
Even for the Ack tournament, albeit I don't particularly like how it's structured, I am not against that one. But that voting thing was pure highschool material.. I think it sounds like fun!

I actually just posted the "suggest things! thread, and the two big points of emphasis for new badges are 1) they should be fairly rare, and 2) a sign of someone who's done something to advance the community.
